Just be sure you are adding a comfort layer to a core layer that is not broken.  A topper will not fix a sagging or cratered or otherwise supportless mattress.

^^^ Very important point.

I looked up the Denver Durango mattress specs, and if I found the right thing, that mattress has 5" of lightweight poly foam (most of it 1.8 lb density) above the springs. That is a lot of foam, and if that stuff is sagging and has deep body impressions, no topper will help. Might be time for mattress surgery (if the springs themselves are good and if your foundation is good), or time for a new mattress.

I don't want to cause you too much anxiety before you get a final answer, but here are some suggestions and food for thought:

  • I have worked with coils ranging from 12.75 gauge to 15.5 gauge and the lower the gauge number the firmer (and most times stronger)
  • One question to ask is whether the steel being used is tempered or not (tempered is stronger)
  • One example shows the Simmons beds with 1000 coil density (850 coils) is 15.5 gauge steel... high carbon steel; the higher carbon content is supposed to be stronger and therefore does not require a thicker gauge to perform as expected. You may want to read some customer responses to the Simmons World Class to determine if that works well
  • The flip side is the Simmons Black beds use...

>>1) Besides what I stated above, is there a way to evaluate how solid and flat your core is?

From what you have posted, the core is individual coils wrapped in foam.  That construction probably relies on the foundation below for support and flatness.  And individual coils can tend to push back at you individually... sort of like each coil beating you like a roll of quarters as you move about.  This is all covered by lots of soft foam, which is proably not offering much comfort or isolation.  All in all, not a system worth building on, imo.

>>2)  Since you seem to understand this stuff, do the specs above assert that the core is basically good (seperate from the foam; or does the foam interfer too much for it matter?)?

Core construction is not good, imo.  I'm envisioning a foam...

Agreed, that is a lot of foam... adding more to it would not help.

GK, Thanks.  My problem right now is figuring out the exact problem.  As you stated so well, the real question is what is the current situation of my mattress?  And my problem is, I don't know how to tell.  I suppose laying on it rolling around should tell me if the there are deep impressions.  I am 220lbs (6ft) and my wife is about 130lbs, (5,3") so I am guessing definately some, certainly on my side (though we rotate the mattress).

So these are my questions, and I hope you (or others who know) might be willing to help more:

1) Besides what I stated above, is there a way to evaluate how solid and flat your core is?

2)  Since you seem to understand this stuff, do the specs above assert that the core is basically good (seperate from the foam; or does the foam interfer too...

Mattress Topper HELP! - wordfinder2

A year and half ago my wife and i bought a Denver Durango Mattress (firm) that has not offered the support I needed.  I have a bad back--lower disc degeneration and chronic back tension.  So we bought a Sleep Better 2" extra firm foam mattress topper on Amazon a year ago and that did the trick for a month or two.  Now I am waking up evernight feeling like I've been beaten by sock with a roll of quarters in it. My wife too.  Basically, there are two hole where my wife and I sleep in the foam.  I am about 220 lbs.

I just came from vacation and slept on many different beds (including a cot in a dorm room), all of which gave me a decent night sleep!  ACK!

Anyway, my instinct is to just buy a thicker topper; the same product but 5"...

Re: Serta Icomfort size problem, anyone else? - cmcrobb

We have the same problem with a Serta i-comfort king mem foam mattress. At first we assumed it was a problem with the king frame we bought. Huge gap at the end of it. When I finally decided to measure the mattress it was 74x76 instead of 78x80. I bought it from Appliance Factory Outlet in Denver and am getting the run around fom them since we didn't figure this out for over a year. I am considering a small claims lawsuit. I realize the warranty ends after a year but 1) its not common knowledge to measure a mattress when you receive one. I never thought a mattress could be so mis-sized (figure a king is a king) 2) its not like if I returned it sooner they would be able to re-sell it 3) Serta failed to notice the size mistake and so did the store that I...
Please Help!!! Deciding on Air Mattress beds - Tean94

My wife and I have a 10 yr. Sealy Spring Queen Mattress, which one of the springs has popped out of the top on the edge of the bed.  It was on my wife's side, and then suddenly it's now on my side!

Needless to say, it's time for a new one.  Not to mention I have PLMD (Periodic Limb Movement Disorder), which is where my legs will rock while I'm asleep and usually when I'm dreaming.  My wife is constantly complaining that she's often woken by the feeling of her head rocking back and forth because my legs are moving.  I'm also on CPAP, but it doesn't seem to help that much in that regard.

I've done a LOT of research on Air Beds and I've narrowed it down to two brands.  Innomax Medallion and the Habitat Ascend.  Though I'm heavily leaning...

New Ikea Malfors foam mattress? - mikepepe86

Hey all!

I'm in the market to buy my first Queen size foam/memory foam mattress.  I'm a little unsure of what I'm doing to be honest.  I have a small budget of $250 to spend so I know I'm not getting anywhere near top of the line but I'm currently on a Full size spring mattress and have been for years.  Ready to upgrade, at least a little.

I've run across this IKEA foam mattress (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70272323/#/30272320) called the Malfors.  It's an almost 5 inch foam mattress.  I tried it at the store and it was comfy but going on Overstock and a few other sites I keep finding 6 or 8 inch foam/memory foam mattresses for around the same price namely from Signature Sleep, SwissLux and a few others.  I'm weary to try buy a mattress I've never tried but the idea of a 6 or...
