I think that most people are probably pretty aware of this from reading the forum threads but it is always timely to repeat it :) There is much more to the story than your "warning" would imply however. Talalay is not the only high quality natural latex being used in mattresses. Some very high quality mattresses are also made using Dunlop and there are several manufacturers of Dunlop besides LI which produce excellent 100% natural latex. There is also some question over the superiority of natural latex from LI over either their own blended Talalay or Radium's Talalay latex in terms of it's qualities. Dunlopillo also supplies the natural Talalay latex used in some mattresses sold in North America although this is much rarer.

Using LI's website to determine the quality of a mattress or the accuracy of a "natural...

Thanks for this new piece of information. I thought they had changed based on your earlier comment.

This sounds more to me like a type 1 allergy (anaphylactic type) than any of the other 3 types and if this is the case is much more serious than a more simple contact type of hypersensitivity. I know they can be serious as I have had a similar issue with something else that developed over a long time (peanut butter) which scared the life out of me (woke me up from a deep sleep unable to breathe through both constriction of the airway and reflux). It was not as...

OK, here are what I believe are your best options. I would take a look at these websites and what I have written and then decide which one you like the best. They are all a little different but i don't think you would go wrong with any of them. They all represent great value and all the prices are for queen siz, include shipping, and include any discounts I know about.

MATTRESS OPTIONS

This one is 6" of Talalay with 2" of Talalay on top with a very nice zippered wool and cotton quilt cover. The top is always soft latex (around the 22 we talked about) and the bottom can be any choice from softer to firmer that he has (28, 33, or 38 ILD). You can also make half the bed...

"I HOPE you weren't referring to Vancouver Island when you said "Maybe that's part of the price you pay for living in such a beautiful but isolated part of the world" lol."

Vancouver Island is paradise and is the CENTER of the world. If it's not important to us ... it's just not important :)

OK on to some mattress talk ... cause that really important! (laughing)

There's a place on Fort st http://www.goodplanet.com/ and they have a couple of what look like Sueno and Greensleep. They are all very nice mattresses and are also well worth laying on as the Sueno's especially are easy to duplicate and both are good quality.

Sleep country also carries the Zenbody by sealy. One of them is all latex (core and top with no poly believe it or not) and one of them...

I certainly understand your point. I have suspicions though that OMI's efforts towards being organic are more driven by a desire to capitalize on (mis)perception than they are on real organic manufacturing. I have no doubt that much of what they say is true and they even have an actual USDA organic mattress (not latex) ... but it's in the part that isn't true at all (I believe that some of what they say is completely false) and the price they charge for the perception they create that I have some "issues" with them. Having said all that, their mattresses are without a doubt very nice. Greensleep for example ... while still too expensive IMO ... are much closer to being organic than OMI in ways that really count as they really do control their own latex supply. I also understand that their latex could be qualitatively different from other...
Re: The pros and cons of memory foam ... beyond the hype. - Phoenix

So here's a "shorter slightly less technical version" for those that just want a quick (ok ok ... sort of quicker) version. Changed the "approach" of the first part, edited the second a bit as well, and highlighted more sentences for people who just want to "scan".

SECOND DRAFT ...

Visco elastic foam or "memory foam" is a very unusual material and perhaps partly because it has such unusual qualities compared to the many other materials used in mattresses, there is also a lot of misinformation "disguised as fact" about it. It is also subject to many different "formulas" in it's manufacturing by different companies which change it's qualities ... for better or for worse ... and this too becomes the subject of lots of the hype and misinformation you will hear in the world of marketing and selling mattresses.

What...

If they were using Dunlop, their claim that their latex is in any way different would be more believable. There are other high cost/high quality manufacturers (Greensleep comes to mind) that have far more control over their latex supply chain than OMI does by a long shot since they own their own plantation and even use a specific "type" of rubber tree to produce their latex ... but they are using Dunlop and there are many more manufacturers of Dunlop than Talalay.

I also like both the material they use in their cover and it's design.

If I don't get a call back soon from Bedrooms and more, I'll call them again. I'm curious as well now that you brought it up.

I personally have no problem with Silica as it is a "natural ingredient" and the main component of quartz and diatomaceous earth. While inhaling the powder can cause some problems, I believe in the form it is used in the fire barriers there is little potential for harm and is certainly the least objectionable of any inherent or added material. Naturpedic (and probably others as well) uses it in their Ultra crib mattresses which is one of only 3 North American mattresses which are GOTS certified and USDA organic (the other 2 are OMI and Lifekind mattresses without latex). I also don't have a real problem with cellulose type of fabrics (viscose/rayon) even though they are not the most environmentally friendly in their manufacture. Many of them such as the bamboo blends are being falsely touted as being "green" just because they come from a plant. To me it doesn't...

cazual, I forgot to ask, did you get the natural talalay or the synthetic blend? They told me over the phone that they sell 70% synthetic blend and 30% natural, and that the natural deteriorates quicker.

I got the blend because of the durabilty.  I had spoken to Sleepez and Flobeds and they confirm that the natural latex has an approximate lifetime of 10 yrs and aside from the green aspect there is no difference between the natual and the blend.

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:

We're looking for a new twin mattress, probably extra long, for my 86 year old mother to use on her adjustable bed.  She has had progressive spine problems for about 40 years, somewhat alleviated by the fact that she's always exercised to the extent she was able and by two back surgeries (most recent about ten years ago).  Her mobility has become increasingly limited, so a comfortable bed is increasingly important.

Often firm mattresses are recommended for back problems, but for her, they are miserable.  Last time we shopped for a mattress she was able to get to a large mattress store, tried many, and the only one she found comfortable seemed to me about as firm as jello.  She loved her jello mattress for...
