Another mattress surgery - stacytr
Sep 4, 2011 12:20 AM
We had a lovely looking Stearns and Foster king sized bed that was about 6 or 7 yrs old -- looked like this <a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t296/stacytr/?action=view&amp;current=mattressstillmostlyintact.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t296/stacytr/mattressstillmostlyintact.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

But it was sagging and we were both hating it :( Thanks to this board we finally got the courage to just peek inside <a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t296/stacytr/?action=view&amp;current=mattress1stcut.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t296/stacytr/mattress1stcut.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Holy cow what are we thinking -- this was an expensive mattress! <a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t296/stacytr/?action=view&amp;current=mattressapeekinside.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t296/stacytr/mattressapeekinside.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Here's what's under the hood <a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t296/stacytr/?action=view&amp;current=mattresscrappylayers.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t296/stacytr/mattresscrappylayers.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

and another look <a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t296/stacytr/?action=view&amp;current=mattresscrappylayers2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t296/stacytr/mattresscrappylayers2.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

This is what was sewn/quilted into the cover <a href="http://s163.photobucket.com/albums/t296/stacytr/?action=view&amp;current=mattresscrappyquiltedlayers.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t296/stacytr/mattresscrappyquiltedlayers.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> we just tossed this layer.

Thanks for the copious pic's stacytr, that is a stack of poly foam!  We have a ten year old Stearns & Foster queen the wife won't let me tear into because "it's not that uncomfortable."

I ordered a FBM 3" 100% Natural Talalay Latex Foam topper [ILD of 20—24] over their 5" HD Poly base [ILD 36] for our RV and it's too firm for both of us. I'm about 215 lbs and the wife (on anonymous forums) is about 135 lbs. I'm adding a 2" layer of FBM [20 ILD] and a thinner cover in the hopes that 5" of latex will cradle better.

To complete your surgery a 2" layer of FBM soft [ILD 20] under a 2" layer of FBM [ILD 32] over your mattress/box springs would be much more plush and supportive than my 8" on a board set-up or your original...

Just a real quick heads up about the standard 'box spring' matching foundations with the iComforts - the twins* used for twin mattress and king foundations have an 8" gap between vertical support rods, right down the center of the bed.  The two thin rods that run between, head to toe IMO, will probably sag down.  They did on mine.  I'm only 190 lbs.

* Sears Newpark had an iComfort twin box spring with the sturdier pattern below, not like mine.  How they deliver a different box spring to me than that store, I don't know.

FWIW,  Sealy and Stearns and Foster use a different pattern of vertical support rods - they are evenly spaced about 4" apart.  With that arrangement, it seems there will not be a sag down the middle in hips area.

So, if it seems your mattress is sagging, might be...

Re: Got a SleepEZ 10000 coming my way - slpngoc

I gave it a few days sleeping on the Ikea euro slat bed base underneath the SleepEZ latex mattress.  Unfortunately it didn't work out.  The euro slats did firm up the feel of the mattress which is not what I wanted.  Seemed like the mattress had a more 'dead' feel on the euro slats.  I thought maybe the mattress couldn't breathe as well, but I don't really know.  It just had more pushback in critical areas like my shoulder.  I adjusted the sliders to almot full soft and was still too firm.  Ah well, little money down the drain.  I trashed the euro slats.

So, I bought a Stearns and Foster box spring.  Yeah, it's a wire frame box spring, but the vertical support rods are evenly spaced and I don't think the box spring will sag.

So, I'll give a month on this setup and...

Re: Are any of these mattress 'ingredients' a red flag? Or appropiate for a $3000.00 bed? - slpngoc

About the Aireloom, I'd personally be most concerned about this -

* Quilting layers: high-loft and FR fibers; 1.5" convoluted foam; 1.5" high-density foam

FR is for 'fire retardant' fiber.  Laced with chemicals to meet the 2007 new standard.  What is that 'high-loft' fiber?  Some kind of polyurethane batting?  The 1.5" convoluted and 1.5" HD are most likely poly foam.  Will it hold up?

------------

Other than that, you could call up Shawn today at SleepEZ, ask some Q's.  Super nice, not pushy.

And, btw, if you do buy,, no delivery fee and ...

no sales tax.  You're in CA, they're in AZ.  No sales tax!

I went from a standard open coil  > Stearns and Foster traditional > Serta iComfort memory foam > SleepEZ all latex   .... all...

Re: What is an "S brand mattress" ? And are Macy's beds marked WAY up or are they really higher quality? - slpngoc
Aug 27, 2011 6:16 AM
'S' brand refers to the big three - Sealy, Simmons and Serta (Stearns and Foster is part of Sealy).

Macy's beds - I've seen Posturepedics, Perfect Sleepers, Beautyrests, S&F's, 'Hotel Collection'.  Around memorial, they had 2011 model Posturepedics up well over $1k in twin.  Then in July, they had same beds well under $1k.  Weird as Memorial Day is thee sales time of the year.

Macy's sells multiple brands.  I don't think they are 'higher quality' than like, Sleep Train here.  Macy's Stearns and Foster's are the same as Sleep Train's, just different names.  That's a well known trick used in the mattress industry.

-------------------------------------

One huge thing about buying a bed ----  Make sure you can get a refund on your first set, know the terms and how much restocking fee if not satisfied.

Re: Latex beds without coils? - slpngoc

On June 17th, Sears delivered a Stearns and Foster set here, well over $1k.  It had the individual coils, their Variable Response Technology (ooooh) polyurethane foam, silk infused cover and all.  I was so excited when it arrived.  I thought, wow, best bed I've ever bought.  I specifically remember the plushness at the top - you'd cush down, and it would come back up ..... that amount of cush seemed to last for about a few days or so.  Then, the bed formed 'normal body indentations'.  The amount of cush went away and the bed firmed up somewhat.  After 2 or 3 weeks, I thought wow, is this it? Bummer.

I've had my SleepEZ 10000 which is three 2.8" layers of blended talalay latex in a cover with some wool in the top.  This all latex is much more resilient than the cheap top batting...

Re: Silly question about "slats" / mattress support - slpngoc

I've read that regular slatted founations firm up the feel of a mattress.

Thinking about regular wood slats, they will flex the most in the center of the slat, and less towards the edge.  I don't think that is the best thing because I would think you want to try to get even flex all over the mattress.

I heard about 'modular grid' foundations, and I've seen a model of a few of them.  I think they are sold with expensive beds like Stearns and Foster Silver Dream and such.  I would imagine those foundations sell for over $500 in Queen size.

Funny thing is that pretty much every foundation is 'S' brands is this type of 'semi flex grid' pattern.  It's basically a grid of rods connected to V shaped supports that go down to the wood cross slats on...

Neiman, it was a Stearns & Foster, but the brand doesn't matter as much as the fact that it was a pillow top. From my experience and from all I've read on the subject since then, the evidence points to the fact that ALL "S" brand pillowtops will sag, even on good quality beds because the foam in the pillowtop is thin and  cheap and will not hold up, even though the actual bed underneath may be just fine and last a long time.

I'm sure a pillowtop filled with latex or other very high quality foam will be durable, but a mattress with those materials are just out of my price range. It's much better and much cheaper to get a firm mattress and soften it with toppers until it's to your liking....

Serta Icomfort Insight - phogstenjr
Aug 30, 2011 8:20 PM
Hello,

I purchased the full size Serta iComfort Insight Low Profile Set.  It was delivered on Friday August 26th, 2011.  I don't think I am quite used to the matress yet,  It also seems to be shorter than my other mattress (a twin size spring) where my feet dange over the edge when lying on my stomach.    Tonight will be my 5th night sleeping on this mattress.

My last matress was causing me some severe back pain due to the fact that it was so firm.  I know this because if I was to lay on the floor for any extended period of time my back would go out (spasm so bad I could hardly stand up straight).  After slepping on this mattress for 4 days, my back still is hurting throughout the...
