Re: Firm mattress / low Foam suggestions - hellbed

I did basically this, but using a one sided mattress (wish there had been an Original Mattress Factory store near us, they sound like a good place) after trying without any luck to find a doublesided one locally.
I do find myself wondering whether doublesided would really be that much of an advantage if one were buying a very firm one, since it does double the amount of foam inside the mattress that can break down and sag.

Latex Supreme at Original Mattress factory - dave43
Aug 2, 2010 8:49 PM
I've tried memory foam and hated it...was hot and didn't like the feeling of slowly sinking. Tempurpedic gives this sensation also. I was very impressed with latex though. I tried the latex supreme at OMF. It was 6" of 60/40 latex blend at 32 ILD and 2" 19 ILD topper. I am around 250 pounds and it seemed like it gave good support while still being comfortable. I've read alot about the other companies latex beds but unfortunately would like to try them out first. Will the other brands feel like the OMF bed? Why is natural latex better then synthetic? I don't read much about the OMF latex on this board...is it considered lower on the scale then others?...

Lurking a long time here but finally decided to step in and comment. Learned a lot here and thanks to all.
I would say the OMF mattresses are less expensive...not sure about lower end. My wife and I bought a latex supreme and the regular latex after laying on them for hours in the store....all day..... I thought the Supreme was more comfortable and my wife thought the regular one was more comfortable. We also wanted the adjustable beds for less than most bought separately when you get them together. OMF doesn't let you buy the bed separately from the mattress. My Supreme (my weight 150#) felt best for both of us AFTER we got home. (We got two Long Twins to go on the adjustable beds.) After some switching to try out each others, I, being the larger child, reclaimed my Supreme for good and bought...
Royal Pedic latex - better alternatives? - InsoManiac
Aug 13, 2010 12:14 PM
We tried a Royal Pedic "Organic Bed" quilttop pure latex mattress at ABC Carpet and Home, and really liked it. The firmness, amount of bounce and the feel of the quilted cover were great. The main thing we didn't like, of course, was the price.
From what I've found in my searches, Royal Pedic doesn't seem to have the highest reputation either. I've read reports about sagging. I understand the cover may be glued to the latex underneath and not of the best quality. The 7-zone construction seems like a gimmick. And I believe their talalay is sourced in Malaysia. So I'm wondering what other brands we should try that would feel similar, but at a lower price and/or higher quality.
I don't live near an Original Mattress Factory or that would top my list.
I tried Ikea's latex mattresses and...

I edited the previous post after I went back and tried the Imperial 640 again today. The 640 actually does feel quite plush compared to the OMF Orthopedic Ultra Firm and Extra Firm. And the Imperial TemperCoil is an individually wrapped coil similar to what L&P calls a Marshall Coil....
"The Original Mattress Factory" store experience :-) - TC2334

I finally made my jaunt to the nearest OMF store and tried the various models. The executive summary: They beat the pants off everyone else in this region on price and construction.
Their innersprings are new, not recycled, and made by Leggett & Platt. I believe that the "custom" innerspring for the orthopedic series is also L&P but I forgot to specifically ask. Their delivery charge is what I called "zoned", meaning it goes up the further they have to go from the warehouse or store.
YMMV, but the three that I liked best, in order:
Orthopedic Ultra Firm. I'd probably pay the $20 for the extra edge foam cylinders for stiffening, just because I plan on using the mattress a good number of years. The orthos have the extra slat(s) and thus more springs in the box spring, have heavier gauge coils, and...

Who you get ot do it might depend on where you a are located, and whether you want foam or innerspring. Imperial Bedding in Huntington, WV makes customs. Google for "RV mattress" or "RV mattress custom" and look throught the results. Boat mattress, antique bed mattress. custom mattress: those searches might get something, too.
Added 9/02/10: http://www.originalmattress.com/custom/overview The Original Mattress Factory, too. If you want "old school" Bonnell, Lura-Flex, or offset cil, they have some great values. I can't comment on their foam mattresses, because I only like innerspring mattresses. lol

You'd think that Original Mattress Factory is "not the quality" but seriously, I have a male friend who has weighed over 400# for years and is now down to 300-something where he can actually get weighted on a scale. He has an OMF mattress and box spring, and he has used it for at least 5-6 years now, maybe even longer. It's either a Regency or an Orthopedic, but he is too lazy to go look at the tag for me. If it can stand up to 6'3" and 400+ pounds for over 5 years, it can't be too weak of a product. Even if it is, the Orthos are $669. If it lasts only 6 years and then you have to throw it out, it cost only $100 - $112 per year. There is a good review of a Legacy in this forum, I believe.
I'd probalby...

Okay, so I went back and did some serious testing of the Imperials. Unfortunately, Imperial is playing as many headgames as the other companies, with goofy model names and also not prominaintly marking theirs with the Imperial label.
Model 640 10" Tempercoil: Has a layer of foam on the top. Feels a little stiff, not hard or harsh, but definitely not plush. I still think I might like this set with a foam topper added to soften it slightly, unless it breaks in with use. The cover was kind of tan or gray & black, and patterened, not white like the online catalog shows. It's a stretchy fabric. Also not a quilted flat-top like the catalog shows. That quilted foam layer on top is obvious to the eye. Good very firm mattress. They called it Temperpedic Absolute Pearl-Lux. Price was $1100 or maybe $1199 for the set.

I am looking for the same thing. I want a 2-sided firm support traditional mattress w/ box spring, and I don't want any pillow top, memory foam, baffle and dazzle, etc. I will look at The Original Mattress Factory's lineup, but I am within a 1 hour drive of their store. You have them in Richmond, if that isn't too far to go. I have slept on an OMF mattress several times as a guest. It's not the orthopedic but I don't know which one it is. The owners said they paid $500 - $600 new for the queen set, more than 5 years ago. So, just have to go try the ones at the store and see what the firm ones are like. I really, really liked it.
Imperial Bedding out of Huntington, WV, also makes 2-sided. I have local store here that carries them, but...
