What is currently wrong with your mattress right now?   That could really help readers develop a solution.

As for that 3.5 inches of stuff between the cover and the springs...  It is probably softer foam than the 36-45ILD you are looking at replacing it with.  Expect a much firmer feel.  Warning: I have no personal experience, but am going based off the hundreds of posts I'ved read so far.

Our mattress is showing indentations/valleys -- you can actually see them just looking at the bed! It has become very unsupportive -- though we both loved the bed when we bought it -- and for a good while afterward. We both wake up with very sore backs. We did NOT buy a pillowtop -- just...

We are DESPERATE for something different in our mattress -- and are finally prepared to do mattress surgery on our 6-7 yr old Stearns and Foster. I've emailed a couple of semi-local places re foam, but was really hoping that Jimsocal could reveal his source for his HR foam -- and we'd be happy to just go there and give them our business. If anyone else has any recommendations of places you've been happy with close to Pasadena (or the Los Angeles area) I'd love to hear that too.

I was also hoping someone could give me their opinion regarding our proposed set up. We cut open a few inches along the bottom of the mattress and were surprised to find that there is only about 3.5" of foam/space above the springs and under the cover. We already have a 2" memory foam topper (can't...

Iris,

Don't think I'll go with a euro slat foundation.  I'm looking for a slightly used Stearns and Foster twin XL box.  They are built better than the Serta and Beautyrest boxes.

I still have the SleepEZ 10000 and it feel pretty good on the Serta iComfort box, but the box is a little tweaked.  I'd just like a more solid box with a little spring to it.  I'll find it.

As for the 10000, I'm in pretty good shape with it.  It's a wee on the firm side, so I can just try some toppers, or not.  It's going ok.  Things just went south for a couple days on that slatted wood foundation, eeeeek.

Mattresses always have to be on either a platform bed with lots of wooden cross slats, a platform foundation, or 'box spring' type foundation if you want mattress up higher.  Obviously can't have a mattress straight onto a metal bed fram. .  Some cultures sleep on mats on the floor, but most don't like that here.

I suppose you could put a foundation on the floor, but most put them on a slatted bed frame or a 'Hollywood' metal bed frame.

With Queen beds, must have at least 5 legs for center support of the foundation.  King beds have dual twin xl foundations, then king mattress on top.

I tried a slatted wood foundation with pine slats spaced a little under 3" apart, and I really did not like it at all - major increase in pressure into my shoulder blade and shoulder.

Serta iComfort matching foundation (non-adjustable) ...... don't even bother getting, unless it is free, then don't use it.

I had the foundation standing on end.  I could see the underside rods at the surface, clearly - they are tweaked and sagging right in the middle of the bed.  I weigh only 195 lbs and I used the foundation for 5 weeks total.

The Stearns and Foster foundation with my entry level mattress was really sturdy at the surface.  They go for $260 + tax.

These iComfort twin boxes are $150 .  Don't waste your time on them, IMO.

--------------------------------------------

I'm a little off in the post above.  All the 'S' brand 'box springs' use the same basic 'semi-flex' constuction.  and I believe they all get the components from Legget and Platt.  A Stearns and Foster 'box spring'...

I had been using a Tempurpedic Symphony pillow for over 3 years.  The trouble I suspect with 'contour' or fixed shape pillows is they force you to position your head to them.  You can't shape them or smush them the way you like.   I'm not so sure that is the best thing for sleeping.

When I lay on my side, I kinda need to tuck my chin down a little bit and that is hard to do on a foam block (contour) type pillow.

I switched back to a down alternative pillow that was free with the Stearns and Foster purchase (which was returned back).  It's a 'Chambercombe' pillow.  I suspect they don't even sell it here in US.  The filling is polyester.  I'll keep using it for a while.

How's that Cloud?

Just wanted to mention my Revolution's firmness and feel remained pretty consistent over the 4 weeks I slept on it.  It felt just like the ones in the store.

My main recommendation would be make sure you're not sinking too much into one of these in the store.  If your hips sink in quite a bit, I'd say pass, unless you know you do well on something like that.

One other thing.  I discovered the matching 'box spring' foundation to the iComfort is not very good.  Look underneath one and you will see.  After 4 weeks, there was a bent rod in mine, and I'm only 195 lbs.  All the foundation is, is wood slats on the bottom and these V shaped rods that go to the surface and connect with a grid of straight rods.

I've seen the insides of the Stearns and...

Ok, I've spent about 4-5 nights on the new icomfort Revolution.  I'd like to mention my experience, as well as respond to a few of your responses as well.

"I'm giving up on this bed.  3 1/2 weeks, neck stiff and makes noise every morning.  Pressure relieving on joints, that's the only plus.  Inadeqaute support, sink in too much. Leave it to Serta to make this lineup go from Insight to Prodigy as medium, firm, ultra plush and plush.  I found the same thing with the Vera Wang latex collection.  Serta is off the mark, IMO."

Inadequate support for your body.  Works great for me.  But I've witnessed my FAVORITE bed (Cloud Luxe) mis-align other people's spine, meaning that the support was WRONG for their body shape/size/distribution.  I disagree that the support is...

Wow, Allura and Grand bed ... those are pretty high end in price.  I would think less than $1200 Cal King memory foam puts you in the Costco (Novaform) / Walmart / Sam's Club type of market.

At one point I had earmarked the Bellezza Plush, but went through a new Stearns & Foster, iComfort memory foam and my SleepEZ latex arrived in 2 boxes about 20 minutes ago.

You are not going to find any evidence based on science. This industry will not provide you with what you are looking for. Most people who work in the bedding Industry have very little knowledge of chemistry and foam formulations.

If you want to know more about the ingredients that go into foam and its fabrication, you may need books published by Dow, Dupont Bayer, BASF etc...

You could also Google the Polyurethane foam Association on line. They have a quite a few research papers.

After that, and once you have a better knowledge of what chemicals are blended together and what types of foam exist, you may want to study the hundreds of patents written on foam to date since...
