Re: SleepEZ - Are swapped layers used? - Phoenix

I personally have no problem with Silica as it is a "natural ingredient" and the main component of quartz and diatomaceous earth. While inhaling the powder can cause some problems, I believe in the form it is used in the fire barriers there is little potential for harm and is certainly the least objectionable of any inherent or added material. Naturpedic (and probably others as well) uses it in their Ultra crib mattresses which is one of only 3 North American mattresses which are GOTS certified and USDA organic (the other 2 are OMI and Lifekind mattresses without latex). I also don't have a real problem with cellulose type of fabrics (viscose/rayon) even though they are not the most environmentally friendly in their manufacture. Many of them such as the bamboo blends are being falsely touted as being "green" just because they come from a plant. To me it doesn't...
Re: Green Sleep Coil + Latex - Phoenix

Some others (good innerspring/cotton/wool ... and no latex or other foams) that may be worth looking at are Naturepedic, Vanguard, WJ Southard, Vivetique, CozyPure, Land and Sky, Natura and Halstead. There are more "regional" manufacturers (mostly US) that make similar mattresses but getting them into Canada would be more difficult than more widespread brands. Most of these should be available in various Canadian outlets.

These guys "copy" other mattresses and are based in Vancouver so may be worth a call as well http://www.parkersmattress.com since shipping would probably not be too much to Alberta if they make anything close to what you want.

There's probably more custom manufacturers in Quebec than anywhere else in Canada but "je ne parle francais" so I didn't look too closely at most of them in my research.

Just to further muddy the organic waters, GOTS is an organic "certifier" that accepts the certifications of any of 13 other "certifiers". http://www.global-standard.org/certification/approved-certification-bodies.html

One of these is "Oregon Tilth" which certifies fibers and textiles for GOTS and others (including the USDA). http://tilth.org/certification/standards/standards-and-regulatons

OMI, NATUREPEDIC, and LIFEKIND claim that they are GOTS certified (Through Oregon Tilth).

I couldn't find LIFEKIND on either the Oregon Tilth website or the GOTS website so I phoned them. Well it turns out that they and OMI both manufacture in the same facility and are sister companies owned by the same people. They told me that they had just noticed a couple of days ago that Lifekind was not listed and plan to correct that.

So at this point here are the "organic" mattresses in North America

OMI (Cotton mattresses only)

LIFEKIND...

I would think that the person who is in the market for this type of mattress is not really price sensitive.   The construction materials look great. Organic latex, wool and other good stuff. Do you really need it?

Re: Non-Toxic Mattress for Child - orgomom

I splurged on a non-toxic, organic latex mattress for my 5yo. It was around $700, but he's super comfortable and I'm not worried about allergies or off-gassing anymore, so it's worth the investment. I purchased it through Organic Grace and it's made by Pure Rest, which makes their latex in-house.

I also looked at more reasonably priced organic cotton mattresses, but choose not to go with cotton due to dust mite allergies. Those sites were:

The two brands might be lower-priced on Amazon - I've seen some sold on there.

I am looking at Naturepedic mattress (http://www.naturepedic.com/products/you/organic_mattresses.php) and couldn't find any reviews online regarding the construction and quality of the mattresses (for adults, not kids).  I would appreciate it if any experts could weigh in and tell me your opinions on whether the mattresses are worth considering.  I was looking at the Symphony, but can't tell if it's worth the price.  Thanks.
