Re: Double sided innerspring mattresses = the way to go? - Sall

Depending on your location, the Original Mattress Factory sells quality, double sided mattresses in all types including latex and coil springs.  They are mostly out east.  That's what I had my daughter buy and then if she wanted to, she could try different latex toppers as needed.  I'm sure there are others but they might not have a national presence.

The Original Mattress Factory offers good quality, 2 sided mattresses at a fairly low price without the plush or pillow tops (they have pillow tops if you want them too).  They have a very small amount of polyurethane foam but it is minimal.  They are a regional mattress manufacturer which is also gets good reviews from Consumer Reports.  I've bought a couple of latex models from them and my daughter bought a firm coil spring mattress from them that they are going to probably add a latex topper too for an inexpensive mattress.  I'm sure there are others as well.  The is also The Mattress Factory in Fort Worth, Texas which has been recommended before for good...

Original Mattress Factory    Orthopedic Ultra Firm.  Next one down is the Orthopedic Firm.  There are a chain with regional markets near their factories.

I have a friend who weighs 400# or more.  He bought  the Ultra Firm in 2007 and it's still holding up very well to him.   He got the double row of foam cyliners at the edges, though, and they only offer a single row now due to flammability issues or something.

Just stopping by and I see that my old post from last year has been revived. No, I did not purchase a Restava bed, we ended up buying an Englander memory foam bed. I have honestly hated this bed since then, it was way too firm and has remained so. In the interim over the past year+ we have purchased a softer 2-1/2-inch memory foam topper and I have also added a featherbed from The Company Store, really all to no avail. This bed may be just fine for those who like a pretty firm bed, but it's not for me. Anyway I just placed an order for a Saatva mattress today because I really don't want any more 100% foam mattresses at the moment, whether memory or latex. So if anyone is interested, I will post my thoughts on it when it arrives.

On a humorous note,...

Foam and Latex - The encasement matters a lot ! - numbernine

About a year ago I posted (though i can't find the original post now) confused about how my 33 ILD polyfoam core w/ 2" 24 ILD Latex EcoSleep Madison could feel firmer than my boyfriends 36 ILD foam w/ 1" 33 ILD with terry cover setup from foam by mail.

Just wanted to post that my mom swapped the 20 year old spring mattress in the guest room where I sleep when I visit with a 36 ILD foam base from foam factory. No latex and nothing else. Just the foam. She got the very stiff striped canvas cover for it.

This setup was pure torture. No give, no flex, no mercy for pressure points. I felt like I was at war with the bed all night long.

I had her order the stretchy terry covers and replace the striped canvas ones.

Really if someone just has a good idea of any general guidelines for the maximum amount of padding you want on a firm mattress you are going to put a topper on later, that would be enough info.

I can find out at the Original Mattress Factory store how many inches (or half-inches..) of padding is on their Orthopedic Luxury Firm mattress and compare.

The comfort layer should cradle your body (filling/supporting in all gaps), distributing your weight as much as possible across the support layer below.  The comfort layer should be thick and firm enough to do this for your sleeping profile and weight.  A typical side sleeping profile gap could require 2-4", 3" average of comfort thickness.  A heavier person will require firmer comfort than alighter person.  If the support layer below is not very much firmer...

Hi.. you all are kidding here right.. I mean all the spec's etc. and what you will add and buy to make a bed here.. it's incredible the lengths you all will go through to construct a mattress.. please continue to shop and look for other options.. but do not waste your money buying these expensive toppers that will be a pain on top of the beds to make and will only cover up the uncomfortable for a short period of time .. that is a money pit if I ever heard of one..   not to mention you thinking 10 to 20 years of anything in this lifetime.. ..not going to happen.. and if you are talking of making your bed from scratch.. forgetaboutit..!!  if you think a 400 dollar investment will buy you comfort.. think again.. not going to happen other than frustrate...

I bought our S-capes from Original Mattress Factory with the latex mattresses.  It works fine and is fairly quiet but you aren't running them all night.  I really didn't do a comparison.  I've "heard" that the L&P S-cape were good but didn't do any real comparison or much research.  OMF wouldn't sell the adjustable bed without the mattress.  The local back store would have but it would have been a little more expensive that way so we went with the OMF one.  On...

Best OMF matress to buy to add a topper to later? - levander

I realize nobody can tell me what the most comfortable mattress for me is going to be. But I'm wondering if anyone is familiar enough with Original Mattress Factory mattresses to offer advice on if there are any design issues that will make certain mattresses better or worse for toppers to be added to later?

I really, really liked the Orthopedic Pillowtop mattress in the store. But from what I've read and personal experiences, I'm too worried about the pillowtop sagging after a couple of years to buy one.

And it's my understanding, once your pillowtop wears out, adding a topper on top of your pillowtop isn't an option that works very well.

So, pillowtops are out I'm thinking.

Now the Orthopedic Luxury Firm doesn't have a pillowtop and I was able to lay down on it very comfortably at the...
