Re: Firmness comparision - talalay vs Dunlop - jimsocal
Jun 1, 2010 11:44 AM
I think I answered this already but yeah, they go by the same ILD scale but Dunlop FEELS a lot firmer. For me Dunlop is intolerable, at least at 32ILD it is.

There was a whole thread on SleepEZ vs. Flobeds just a few weeks ago with that title. Look for it.

As for the same manufacturer I am not sure. I am pretty sure they do both sell some Latex International. Pretty sure flobeds no longer sells Dunlop processed latex but don't quote me on that. SleepEZ does sell Dunlop made by Latex Green. But to be sure, always call or write and ask them. I think Flobeds has options for Natural or Talatech Talalay, but again, check to see. I'm sure it's on their web site. If not they are very welcoming to inquiries by phone. SleepEZ could be a little hard to reach...

Re: Inner Spring vs Pocket Coil - jimsocal

LOL well I guess we could sort of say that.  I really think this idea that the coils migrate is more a myth. Pocket coils flex more than most standard springs as they are not reinforced by helical wires, so the foam itself flexes more than it does on a normal spring....this might somewhat contribute to more severe body indentations which does seem to happen.  I guess my skepticism is just that none of these people probably ever looked on the inside of the mattress after it 'failed'.  I have cut open a few warrantied Simmons mattresses.  I would even cut the springs out of the pockets where the major indentations in the mattress were located, I would measure the height of the coil inside and outside of the pocket (they were precompressed before being placed in the pockets) so it was a pretty...
Anyone want to trade for a Dunlop layer? - jimsocal

There is a description with photos here:

http://www.whatsthebest-mattress.com/forum/1-58-medium-dunlop-latex-topper-sale/10210-0-1.html

I bought this from SleepEZ and it came this way. Yes, it has some imperfections but they do not affect the way it works or feels. I am only looking to sell or trade it because it is just too FIRM for me. It's 1 and 5/8" thick and made by Latex Green - all natural. It's marked as 32ILD but it feels like 42ILD to me and does not have the springiness that Talalay has. (I think the ILD is correct, it's just that Dunlop feels much more firm than Talalay in the same ILD.)

It sold for $105 new.

It's a TWIN size and that would fit anyone's Eastern King for one half so if you or your wife/husband wants the mattress a bit firmer on their side, this...

I didn't mean to scare you off of Dunlop, just wanted you to be aware of it's firmness.  I believe it really is for heavier people.  But you will be replacing regular foam like Jim did in less than a year I believe.  Look for his postings on foam under "Highlighted Threads" at the top of the forum, Jims Newbie mattress or something like that.   I suggest you read that, he has used many different foams, and latex, and springs.  The only time I used foam was in a Sealy Trueform, (like TP) and that failed in less than 6 months for me.

I also think if you are picky on latex and want the "best of the USA" then Latex International is the best IMHO, and only MHO.  I have never tried FBM, some people love it and...

Re: What are Foambymail and Overstocks latex toppers like? - Leo3

The 2" topper I got from O-stock was labeled Latex Green 15ILD and was beautiful, no flaws.  This is Dunlop latex, so it is firm.  It is on the bottom of my layers. No way can you sleep on this as a top layer unless you are over 250 lbs.  It is a good bottom layer however.  The 2 other O-stock layers I bought of the 1 1/2" layers were not labeled, but were softer than the LG 15ILD, just a tad, no major flaws (it is Dunlop).  The only flawed one I had was the 23ILD Latex International (labeled obviously) that had a 6" x 1-2" flaw, as in missing latex.  So that was not a good piece, but it opened my eyes to this wonderfully soft layer.

If you don't mind taking a chance on latex and trying it out, it is cheap, and it is...

Diane, Sleepeze carrys Latex Green Dunlop, as well as RMM, Absoluteonsale also. I believe, Budgy can correct me if I am wrong Natura uses Latex Green in the lower layers of their mattresses.  Not sure who else uses them.  Aren't they the only ones making Dunlop now?  I wonder if the mattresses from Sears used Dunlop that was as firm as they make now.  If so I wonder how most people could take the firmness as a top layer.  You had to really like a firm mattress.

Not sure I understand what you meant by leaving it compressed, for how long?  If you are buying layers I am not sure you can return them to Sleepeze, I believe only mattresses are returnable, but not positive.  As for RMM they do have Natural Talalay latex, look again, they have both Dunlop and Natural Talalay.  They do not take returns, so I wouldn't leave the toppers in the shrunken packages.   Also free shipping with RMM, $50 charge for shipping Sleepeze for toppers only, free for mattresses.  Read all of the fine print.  I don't know anything about FBM return or shipping policy.

I think I am going to get 32ILD, the 24ILD is really quite soft, and am not sure why people want softer than that.  But I am 175 lbs, so I squish the 24ILD real easy.  I might be happier with 32ILD on top, but...

Re: Costco Spalena Sheet sets - Philip

Black,

If you are asking if these sheets are like flannel (heavily brushed), then the answer is no.

We live in Houston.  You probably are aware of our summer temperatures, but we also get pretty cold during our winters, as well.  We don't have winter/summer sheets, but use these spalena sheets year round.  We do, however, keep our thermostat set at a comfortable level throughout the year.

We were recently back at Costco, and walked into another spalena road show.  We purchased a king 'blanket', so I can at least describe it to you.  For starters, we got a blue/green color that is totally different from the green sheet set that we own.  At the time, we didn't realize the color difference, but it does go well with our cream and brown sets, and is not totally awful with our green set.  It...

IMO, a well made mattress may well feel too firm for awhile, then the components break in and it is perfect for a long time.  If you buy a mattress that feels great right out of the package, quite often it is too soft in three months(I've had a few like that).  In looking at the innards of the mattress you bought, I don't see anything amiss.

I have a mattress that I had made for me, with offset coils(L and P), an insulator layer each of burlap and wire, then cotton batting and then several inches of quality P/U foam.  It was way firm at first and I second guess myself half to death.  I put on memory foam toppers(hurt my low back), and finally just bought a polyfill topper that is a few inches thick and that solved my issue.  Now, a year and a half...

I was gonna say Foambymail, but I'm on the fence with them too. They told me their latex is from Europe, not china, and it is as natural as possible, whatever that means. Anways what if you were to just buy a cheap firm twinn, and then get him a topper from Overstock for $113?. the online reviews look good there. Their latex is from Sri Lanka I think. I'm looking there too. (Please do not let him sleep on the top bunk, even when he is older, I read a very sad story about a boy that fell off the top bunk, and it messed him up so bad, his mother had to send him away to be taken care of. It broke her heart.) Some people don't realize the danger of bunkbeds. That is very good you are wanting a very clean green room for him. He will love...
