I am still sleeping on my old Serta which is comfortable but leaves me with a stiff lower back. The guest bed I use occasionally will resolve the kinked back but obviously I am sensitive to the chemical off-gassing (burning eyes, sore-ish throat) therefore I can't sleep too many nights in a row on it. So my quest continues. I am waiting for Essentia to open a store nearby this summer and check them out. Yes, it's latex but I am curious about their new latex memory foam. I checked out Green Sleep (yes, latex again) but it was too firm.
I almost bought from RockyMtn, I was told their natural Talalay is made by Latex Green. I bought from SleepEZ who also sell nat. latex by Latex Green and the natural latex was very nice quality. So assuming (check again with them) that RM is made by Latex Green I'd consider getting it from them. I'm not sure about their return policy though, so check on that. But for that much money less, I'd go with the latex green over the LI. Budgy as I recall, had some good things to say about Latex Green and I do like mine.
Before I realized ZZZombie had already gotten to the bottom of this (I didn't see his post due to the forum not showing the whole thread!), I wrote CostCo about this product. I got back basically the same info he/she got, above:
"
1) What ILD or firmness is the latex? 12 to 16 IFD
2) Who makes it? Latex International, Latex Green... or ? We (Sleep Innovations) make it in our plant in West Chicago .
3) Is it Talalay or Dunlop processed latex? Neither... we pour it on our continuous Max Foam Line.
4) Is it natural or synthetic or a blend? It is synthetic latex blended in with Visco elastic chemistry.
I am offering this like-new piece of latex for sale that I got from SleepEZ:
"
1.5" Twin 100% Natural DUNLOP Latex Topper 1.5 x 38 x 74"" (this is equal to 1/2 of an Eastern or regular King sized mattress) I have not measured the length and width but it fits my Twin mattress well, maybe just an inch or so longer than my mattress. It is, however, 1 and 5/8" thick, not 1.5" as they say. I was told it was made by Latex Green.
30-32 ILD so they say. As most of you may know I have said on several occasions that this FEELS more like a FIRM to me, but I'm no expert. All I can...
There are good coil mattresses, although they will be much more costly than a normal coil mattress, brands that build them well:
Hastens, Vi-Spring, Hypnos, Green Sleep, Carpe Diem, Royal Pedic, Mc Roskey, Shifman, and I know there are others just not coming to my mind at the moment.
Green Sleep is about as high end as you can possibly go for latex. So its going to be costly. You can get a good quality Natura bed for half the price. In Canada you can't really get a $2000 natural latex mattress in a king size unless maybe it was a floor model bed or something along those lines. But Natura also makes a really good product and depending on what you wanted to get you could get really good quality latex foam king sets (including bases) between the 3~4K range. You might be able to get an "S" brand latex foam for less, however the unfortunate part is that they are usually containing a fair bit of really cheap PU foam, like not even remotely comparable to this other foam place you went to by the sounds of it. ...
You may want to check out sleepez mattress components. Their firm dunlop is 38-40 ILD. That might compare to xtra firm at most places, but if you call they might be able to get even firmer. Their supplier is latex green, which is suppose to be pretty good. Not sure if you can return components though, so you would have to check on that.
even though they have an excellent return policy on special size like this it is doubtful they would take it back. but I am sure they could custom cut it....
A year ago we purchased 2 beds for our kids from Savvy Rest and have slept on them ourselves too. Just recently, our Sleep Number bed had started giving us issues so we decided it was time to look into the natural latex bed for us. We need to have the ability to customize each side, don't want to breathe all the chemicals that are put into standard mattresses to make them flame resistant, want a long term mattress, eco friendly, etc.
My husband saw that Sleep EZ natural & organic king mattress was about $500 LESS than the 'comparable' Savvy Rest. Luckily he suggested to get the free samples for "apples to apples" comparison. And we are glad we did! We compared the Soft/Medium/Firm Dunlap layers and found that:
a) The Sleep EZ (Latex Green) layers had more of a 'chemical' odor vs the Savvy Rest (Coco Latex) which smelled more natural. b) ...
Hi Kimberly. Thanks very much for posting a reply to this thread. I knew some of what you said, but not all. And I appreciate you explaining why you prefer latex and for making the recommendations. I have seen flobeds recommended many times on this board. And I am going to look in to what it would take to order from the US. As long as shipping isn't that much and I can broker myself then it might make financial sense to check out flobeds. I also PM'd Budgy (Daniel).
Have you seen the savvyrest.com website? Fascinating site. Much like greensleep.ca, they do a lot of what I assume is full disclosure on their product, processes etc. It was interesting to read that savvyrest uses Dunlop and Talalay and feels that one isn't better than the other. They are just different. I thought I read that the consensus was well done...
Leo, I have been to a S Brand retailstore very recently and experienced what you noted about the sales part of this business. Heck, I've seen that in every retail business. I was impressed with this company and thought maybe they were different because they are pushing that I just get a topper. Maybe they just don't know much about latex. Maybe they are not well informed, ignorant. They had latex but gave up on it after a couple of years.
Budgy, thanks for all of that information. I have to admit it's not what I was expecting to read, but I'm glad to have read it before I bought in to the PU foam mattress philosophy
