Re: Savvy Rest report - eagle2

catlover said "The Dunlop latex looks good and I like the slight aroma. Fresh-clean scent IMO. Not overpowering rubber smell at all."

catlover: I am curious how the Dunlop layers looked in a little more detail if you would. Were there any imperfections? Any cracks, cuts,or tears? Any discoloration of any kind?

It is my understanding that 100% natural botanically grown latex, whether it's Talalay process, or Dunlop process, will have some minor imperfections. Not pristine looking. It is my understanding that the only way you can get pristine looking latex is with a blended product. But then you have a product that has a distinct rubber chemical odor, due to the fact that it is at least 60% petrochemical-based latex.

I know that the Talalay I receive from FloBeds had a few of these imperfections. And the smell you mentioned is exactly the way I would describe it. A very slight...

Kimberly said, "First night's report - whew!  the latex really smells.  I know this will dissipate quickly, it's not necessarily an unpleasant smell, nor is it overpowering, but it has a slightly sweet, rubbery smell."

"Eagle, yes, I did buy the blended talalay and yes, I would characterize the odor as somewhat sweet, it was not at all unpleasant.  It was just there.  Actually, by the morning I didn't notice it anymore."

My assumption is that the excessive odor that you referred to, earlier in this thread, is due to the fact that it is a blended product.

What alerted me was your comment that it smells like rubber. The rubber smell that we have learned to associate with rubber, or what we call rubber, is due to petrochemical involvement in the manufacture of these products. After unpacking my bed and smelling actual 100% natural botanically grown Talalay latex, and detecting this...

Kimberly: I am so glad you got it all put together and had a good nights sleep. I would definitely concur with your assumption that all the unloading of all that material, carting it up stairs and taking it out of those plastic bags(no easy thing, in and of itself) is more than likely the cause for your backache. When the wife and I did my bed, we had to drag out the old waterbed mattress. Unfortunately I did not get all the water out of it(failed to rent a water pump) and we had about 100 pounds of water left in the mattress. No fun, at all!

I am curious about your odor from the mattress. Didn't you say you were purchasing the blended product? The reason I ask is that the order from the all natural that I purchased was rather pleasant and quite mild. It has a slightly...

Hi Eagle,

Perhaps her information came from here:

http://www.flobeds.com/pdf/coreexchange.pdf

This is the pdf file with instructions for exchanging cores.  Very last sentence on the page: "Please return within 10 days of receipt of cores."

What concerns me more is this statement on their website:

"The latex you receive may have fractures or be uneven and may have been repaired with nontoxic glue. These will not affect the ability to provide your body with superior support. Latex may be gently washed with soap and water."

Were any of your latex cores  . . . fractured . . .uneven . . . . repaired with glue?

Kimberly: In talking with Dewey today about the return time frame, I was told that this was an old publication, that they had not had a chance to redo. Their policy has been, for some time, to allow the customer whatever time frame they need within the 90...
Re: FBM Foam & Latex 1 year update - eagle2

B White:Thank you very much for being willing to come back and give us this update on your mattress experience.

I have only been sleeping for two weeks on a FloBeds. But what you have revealed from your one year experience makes a great deal of sense to me and reinforces some suppositions that I have felt myself. For instance. The idea that the foam actually softens with use. I was told this could happen by a knowledgeable person at Savvy Rest. This individual indicated that the foam would soften up over time.

I have an all natural botanically grown Talalay process latex mattress. I had one side of my California King that was initially set up, from top to bottom, firm, over extra firm, over extra firm.  When I first laid on it it seemed very solid and firm indeed. But the more I laid on it the more accommodating...
Re: Latex - 2 layers vs 3 layers - KimberlyH

Randy,

The Flobeds come with either two or three base layers.  The base layers are three inches each.  These can be swapped out as many times as you want during the 90 day period.  In addition to the two or three base layers, Flobeds come with a soft two inch convoluted latex top layer.

Here is the two-base layer bed:

Here is the three-base layer bed:

There are two methods used to manufacture latex.  One is called the Dunlop method and one is called the Talalay method.

Talalay latex is available either as 100% natural latex from the rubber tree or as blended latex, which is a blend of 100% natural latex and...

I did read that post about the foundation.  Actually, I did not order a slat foundation from Flobeds.  I am not a fan of slat foundations, and I didn't like what I saw on the Flobeds website.  I just purchased a regular low profile mattress foundation to put my flobed on.  In fact. . . it's the low-profile Triton foundation for the Simmons Natural Care latex mattress.

I honestly don't think the type of foundation makes much difference as long as it is sturdy enough to support the mattress and allows sufficient air flow....
Re: Best combination of quality and price for Latex - KimberlyH

John,

Have you been able to get out and actually try any latex mattresses?  If you can, I'd suggest you do a net search for local companies selling latex mattresses and try them out.  I was able to find two within driving distance and tried both a Dunlop and a Talalay latex mattress.  IMO they have quite a different feel from each other, and I did not like the feel of the Dunlop processed latex, although obviously some people do.

I just ordered a Flobed, which is arriving Thursday, and although the current sale is on blended Talalay latex beds, they are having a sale on the 100% natural Talalay latex beds in a few weeks and will honor the sale price now.  When I ordered mine, I waffled a bit on this but then just told Dewey to go ahead and send me the blended.

Whatever you do, just be sure you...

thanks, for the responses.  I actually did try a couple at a Jordan's furniture store in Nashua, NH.  They were by nature's rest and Natura.  Both were nice.  I posted on them in another thread.  I read the other thread about dunlop quality and it seemd that selelrs of latex Green said it was best and sellers who got it from the other manufacturer said theirs was best and the other was junk.  Not really a scientific or even unbiased comparison.

Savvy sells locally (Milford, NH) through a chiropractor's office, but they don't even answer their phone, just tell you to leave a message.

so if you buy a two layer (3 with top piece) or if you but a three layer, etc., do you have the option of exhanging all 3 for different firmnesses or do you only have to do that with one of them?

and you have to decide between natural and talalay?  oh boy, more fun   i guess ihave more reading to do

i am sure that discussion is here somewhere and i will find it
