Re: Best Organic Latex Mattress?? - eagle2

After a very long and protracted ordeal I decided on Flobeds. The fact that they use only Talalay was one of my major concerns as well, as it would seem to me that Dunlop would give you a firmer feel.
I will know a lot more by Tuseday, as the mattresses is to arrive tomorrow.
One point I would like to make regarding nomenclature. The habitat website, which sells a very interesting mattress by the way, makes a very valid point about the word organic. Organic is just the wrong word to use as regards a full 100% natural latex product that is derived exclusively from the rubber tree. They say the proper word to use is "botanical" it makes sense to me that we need something to make it clear when a manufacturer is producing a latex product exclusively derived from the rubber tree.
It is amazing how even this niche market...

enlighten:Like you it is my understanding that botanically grown latex is a superior product to the synthetic variety. While the green aspect of botanically grown latex is important to me, it is not the end-all be-all of latex foam, as far as I am concerned. If somebody could prove to me, through scientific testing, that a blended product was superior, in so far as usefulness,IE longevity, comfort, and cost. Then I might very well want the blended product. But no one, that I'm aware of, has done this.
So, the all natural botanically derived latex will remain superior in my mind, until somebody can prove to me differently.
There are all kinds of synthetic foam all around us. I have lived with it all my life (72Y). Some of it has been quite durable and useful. For instance the seats in my 1992 Honda Accord are just as good today...

Well, there's cheap "regular" foam (often polyurethane) and latex foam (sponge rubber). And then there's synthetic rubber (latex) and natural rubber (latex) and a blend of the two. There's a lot of discussion about the pro's and con's of various forms (natural/synth/blend) of latex foam, but I think that there's no question that all latex foam lasts longer (keeps it's resiliency longer) than polyurethane foam. I suspect that natural foam (sponge rubber) is the "oldest" form of cushioning foam, which might be why the old rubber (latex) couch cushions lasted for decades while the new office chair (probably not latex foam but cheaper and lighter polyurethane) died rather quickly.

Bedhater - my heart goes out to you! I know the overwhelming feeling of searching endlessly for the right solution. I found one, and later realized I had allergies to it (memory foam). So I'm searching again, too. A few of us are trying a "new" product we ran across...Oodles toppers & pillows. They seem to combine latex (in the form of pellets or "noodles") and a natural fiber spun from corn. I'm hoping it's the best of two worlds - fiber filled and latex... I like the puffy feeling if fiber and the springy feel of latex. Once they arrive and we try them, we'll report back to let you know if they are good or not.
Meanwhile, I hope this is not too off topic or stepping out of the area this board is intended for, but I went through a long year of waking at 3 or...

Someone posted incorrect info about Savvy Rest -
I am about to order from Savvy Rest and
You can do as many exchanges as you want for 90 days! (you do have to pay for shipping but that's only fair IMHO They do suggest you give yourself a few days to adjust before exchanging)
It is correct that Savvy allows no returns. One needs to spend some time on the configuration to try to avoid exchanging. Split layers for each side seems the logical way to go because you then have so many possible combos to try out if you order a few different firmnesses. Savvy has a "choose the right firmness" page for guidance on what might be best for your particular needs.
One does have to pay for shipping on exchanges (twin is $90 via UPS - they send new layer apparently & a label, so you use...

I didn't see that their wool is washable or bonded with silica, but haven't checked whole site yet. Washable wool sounds too good to be true and we all know how that ends....
again, don't worry about 1 1/2" impression if going with Dunlop. (we are doing Dunlop, Dunlop, with Talalay for top layer - now THAT might indeed be an issue for us to consider...thank you!
My biggest concern is that Dunlop might be too firm.....even with soft dunlop for top layer....but if we can find a company that sells...

Caution again about "all natural"....my research discovered that blended latex can be called "natural", so ask ask ask!!
I wouldn't expect Dunlop to impress over 1/2", but I'd still ask if this is a "typo" (how convenient for them if it is a typo!)
Do not buy a non-organic cotton/wool cover! There is fire retardant - usually boric acid powder. Don't let anyone tell you it's safe & they will! (one company told me they had to pay the government tens of thousands of dollars to get certified to eliminate the fire-retardant. The government knows that putting...

I too have overdone the research as we are seeking best king latex mattress with split removeable options (probably in Dunlop as we need firm for bad back problems) Currently, Savvy is in 1st place, but still fine-tuning....
According to my research one needs to be very careful, because blended latex is allowed to be called "natural"!
SleepEZ sells both Talalay and Dunlop latex mattresses, but one of their pages says "we only use Talalay...." (see whole quote from their page below) Very confusing.
There are only 2 methods used to process latex: Dunlop or Talalaly. SleepEZ uses the terms "Talalay" and "Standard" when they refer to the 2 processes? (see below for whole quoted paragraph) What is the reason for this...
