Re: How to make a firm latex mattress soft? - mingus

Well, i received the new "12-14 ILD" Latex from Fibex and it's FIRMER than the 16-18 ILD Latex I bought from sleepwarehouse.com. Both were supposed to be made by Latex Green, i figured the 12 ILD would be softer. This will go back today and I will be shopping for a new bed. I have about $4000 invested at this point. Not sure what to do with the old bed.

The Wool topper was extremely uncomfortable for me also.

update:

I just contacted sleeplikeabear and they are sending me samples of the 14/19/22 ILD latex. I think this their Talalay will be softer than the Dunlop I have....

I have read the forum all the different opinions left me with more questions. I been to the mattress stores and physically tried the bed but its difficult to know how i would feel if I take it home. I was hoping to get feedback from someone who has similiar stats and problem as me. Of course I don't expect someone to know my personal comfort preferences. lol Thanks for the tip. :)

Please post if you find anything you like. I am in So Calif and have had a hard time finding high-end beds to try. Not sure where in So Cal but REM Sleep had a nice price on a Natura Eco Brilliance top *only* that I would put on my Latex box. I think i liked it, need to go back and try again. Originally tried it at a place on Western near Melrose...

Since this post I bought a 3" 16-18 ILD from Sleepwarehouse and that is still too firm for me. They will not take returns so I am stuck with it. It's not that it's really hard, i just want to sink in a bit more when laying on my side. It's Dunlop by Latex Green.

Now i have a 12-14 ILD Dunlop on order from Fibex, we will see what that does.

I also bought a 2" Wool topper from sleepandbeyond.com which is a very nice product, but not the soft feel I want.

this is getting expensive since most of these companies will not accept returns.

Almost ready to just start over with a completely different bed.

The Natura Eco Brilliance seemed pretty nice, found a place willing to sell just the top reasonable.

Latex is jiggly....

It's a long story... bottom line ended up with 2-piece latex mattress. Bottom piece is from a Land and Sky Heaven and Earth and is 9"  in 2 parts firm/medium-firm. Top is 3" sleepwarehouse 16-18 ILD Dunlop by Latex Green. Top is rated as "Med-Soft", and it's too firm for me. Support is ok, just doesn't feel cozy.

Latex has that Analytical feel to it - for lack of a better term, not too cozy really.

I'm thinking about a 2 or 3" Wool topper at this point. Tried a featherbed and didn't care for that really. I'd also be willing to replace the top latex with softer, just hard buying online.

Strange - going by most of the ILD ratings 16-18 ILD should be pretty soft.

I prefer to sink in a bit i guess. I'm 185lbs average build.

Thanks for any ideas....
Importance (or not) of the cover [my first post] - WestofCary

Hello, and thanks for creating a very informative and interesting forum. I do feel that I learn 2 things, and then have 3 more questions. Oh well...

My wife and I have decided that latex (mattress!) is the way to go for us, and of the few we've been able to recline upon, we prefer softer ones, like the Serta Serenity Plush, a similar Serta model, and (maybe especially) the Original Mattress Factory's "plush" latex model (see http://www.originalmattress.com/products_and_prices/mattresses_and_box_springs/foam_and_latex_mattresses.aspx ) . What each of these seem to have in common is a fairly thickly quilted cover which contains a (non-latex) foam. (These are not pillow-tops, which we do not prefer and I've learned here are to be avoided.) These were the most comfortable in our 20-30 minute tests, as the less quilted ones seemed too firm to our liking. When I investigate the world of options on the internet, there seems to...

Need advice on getting more lumbar/hip support from latex without sacrificing comfort - Zzzzzzzspleaze

I just received my Latex Green 3" topper today (Dunlop-processed, 16-18 ILD) from sleepwarehouse.com. It is marvelous! It is plush, sumptuous, luxurious...it feels like a dream. It's like being suspended on top of velvety firm jello (best analogy I could come up with, though it sounds really weird, I know). It arrived very quickly, too -- only three days after placing my order. It is probably not the prettiest latex topper, it does have cosmetic imperfections. Not all of the pinholes are aligned perfectly on one side, there are shallow indentations here and there where air bubbles were created during processing. In its favor, it is odorless as promised (except for a very, very faint rubber scent that can only be detected if you press your nose against it) and I imagine that it feels exactly the same as a prettier topper would....

Great...thank you all so much for the feedback! It's been invaluable. I won't go with 4", but I'm wondering if I can get away with 3"...it's more economical to put together a mattress using the fewest layers possible. My present mattress has a 3" memory foam comfort layer and it just isn't thick enough. I don't know if 2" would really be worth my while. 4" does seem a little excessive for a top layer, though.

Well, anyway, I'm getting samples of the two ILDs I'm interested in (16-18 and 26), so I'll be better able to judge which thickness I need once I've actually felt the material.

I can only comment on the latex pillow. I have tried many, many pillows. My favorite is queen size latex pillow that I got at Sears. Latex International makes it. Queen...
More kooky latex questions...this time regarding Dunlop processed toppers. - Zzzzzzzspleaze

I've been doing some more reading about latex and am intrigued by the assertion that Dunlop processed latex is more supportive at lower ILDs than Talalay due to its closed-cell structure. I realize that the sensation isn't as plushy or springy, but I think I'm willing to sacrifice that for greater lower back support. My question is this: If I purchase a Dunlop topper, 16-18 ILD, can I later add another topper, in either the same ILD or a higher ILD, to make an 8" mattress? My main concern is that Dunlop latex is firmer on one side than the other, so I wonder how that would work when layering toppers.

If anyone is of the opinion that 4" of 16-18 ILD Dunlop is too much comfort layer, please, feel free to say so. I was torn between 3"and 4", but had the thought that an...

Hi,

There's a very clear feelign of sinking in between the cores, or causing them to separate somewhat. Rolling to either side is a bit of a 'going uphill' feeling. Any suggestions on ways to eliminate or minimize this? It seems like, ideally, with the three cores, you would alternate their orientation like II = II in order instead of II II II ...

Well Chris I'm going to try this again. I just wrote you a lengthy response in this crazy site and the way it works it all got wiped out.

So let me try again.

@eagle2:  I did find a very wide variety of prices from various sites that claimed to use mostly the same suppliers (Dunlopillo, Latex Green, Latex International, Latexco, etc).  Assuming this is true then we come down to overhead and profit margin.  Based on googlemap image of the SleepEZ warehouse in Phoenix, they are not exactly breaking the bank maintaining a beautiful storefront.  Bottom line for me was as long as I get a good product and good service, which I did in this case, I like lower prices!

@steve47:  Hope you have a good experience as well....
