The Answer - BonnieBeth

Hi everybody,
It's funny how the more things change the more they stay the same. In the end, I found the perfect bed for myself.
Surprise surprise, though: It's the same combination I've been using for the past four years. And I know Sleep Number beds have gotte alot of very negative press here, but at this point I honestly can't say anything bad about it.
I bought the Select Comfort 5000 with the built in topper in May '04. My main problems were that I couldn't get comfortable because we were having terrible problems with the electric in our area, and we had brownouts and blackouts on a regular basis. So the pump burned out several times (despite the surge protectors) and the bed felt like the pump wasn't inflating it properly. Then Keyspan fixed the problem by getting rid of the parrots that were nesting all over the electrical transformers. The...

I used to post on this forum alot, but haven't for awhile. I still say Nay to Hastens despite all the claims about the bed. The fact that their mattresses are so outrageously priced, way over the budget of the average American, confirms my feelings about their mattresses. And even though the materials are natural, the fact is pocket sprung mattresses are not for everyone. They can be very firm. Also, the wool and horsehair can be an allergy problem for people with skin sensitivities. I made sure to try out the Hastens (and Carpediem mattresses) last summer when I knew I"d be wearing shorts and short sleeved shirts. What I discovered is that after lying on the topper for five minutes, I got very very itchy. And it happened in two separate stores.
What I would do is what confused bedbug did. As long as it feels comfortable in the...

Foam Order has a convoluted Talalay latex topper under their mattress pad section for $288.99
http://www.foamorder.com/mattress_pads.html They don't say what the ILD is or how thick it is, so you would have to call and ask. Foam By Mail has a 2" 32 ILD non-convoluted topper for $189.99.
http://www.foambymail.com/LatexTKing.html. If you're trying to save a little money Brylane still has the 1" Natura Talalay toppers available, but only in full and twin for $64.99. Two twins would make a king. They always have some kind of coupon deal going. Right now it's free shipping or 30% off. I have one of the Brylane toppers. I think the ILD is probably around 28--medium....

If you can find the new Serta Pure Response line of 100% latex, I think you'll really like the way they feel. I just discovered them yesterday and if I wasn't already happy with my zippered mattress, I might give this serious consideration. I loved the way they felt! Especially the plush model. Comes with a 30 year warranty. Pro-rated, of course. But, since latex doesn't show body impressions, I imagine this mattress will last a long time. I liked it better than the Sealy Spring Free line.
Wow! Thanks to everyone who responded. We appreciate your advice! I know that we are toally strange, but *MOST* of the time we enjoy snuggling in our full sized bed. There are nights, of course, where one of us is sick or restless, and then it can be exasperating, but that's what the guest bedroom is for. Usually once...

Jimsocal has put up a few posts regarding using an electric knife to cut latex. Here is one link:

I'll measure the Natura latex pillow and let you know how high it is unless you already have that information......

There are nights, of course, where one of us is sick or restless, and then it can be exasperating, but that's what the guest bedroom is for. Usually once he gets settled, we're fine. It's the cats that really wish the bed were bigger. If you can imagine the two of us and three huge Maine Coon cats sharing a standard full...
My husband and I finally found some latex beds to "lay/lie" on today. We went to every single mattress place near our town. The sales people pulled out all the stops trying to convince us what we should look for in a mattress ("You'll want the latest innovation: a no flip mattress!"). We let them show us everything, and were quite entertained with...

I also see a popular manufacturer here, SleepEZ has a choice of "100% Natural latex", or "Talalay blended latex".
So my question is, is "natural" latex any different than a "Talalay blended" latex? If so, how does it differ?

How about this statement I received:<BR><BR><BR>&quot;Hello --<BR><BR>Natural latex and talalay latex are different compositions of various materials. Natural latex is 100% natural pure latex derived from the sap of South East Asian tropical rubber trees primarily grown in Sri Lanka. It is naturally hypoallergenic as well as dust mite and mold resistant. It is biodegradable and provides a pure green environmentally friendly sleeping surface.<BR><BR>Talalay latex actually refers to the Talalay process in which the natural latex is formed. Talalay latex uses certain chemical composites to form the foam which means that it is composed of a certain percentage of natural latex and a certain percentage of synthetic materials. The percentage of synthetic material contained in Talalay latex can be as high as 70%.<BR><BR>There is a demand for 100% natural latex because many people would prefer to sleep on a pure, non-synthetic, all natural sleep surface which is mold and allergy...

I found out a little bit more about the "latex" used, however I don't know what it really means in terms of quality.
"The ErgoSoft Latex foam we sell at Absolutecomfortonsale.com is 100% Natural Green Latex, and is NOT a mixture of synthetic foams – but it is definitely manufactured using the preferable Talalay process. The reason that consumers need to be aware of the fuzzy usage of the word Talalay is because numerous domestic manufacturers blend natural and synthetic components in an attempt to get the best qualities of both – and then fabricate foam from the mixture using the Talalay process. So, if you want natural, green, and eco-friendly latex products, make sure that you ask for them specifically."
I also spoke with the owner, and I asked what makes your latex "green", and he simply said NO synthetics or petro products are used at all in the process, and...

I searched, and found there was one topic about this company, and their latex they sell, and the other thread doesn't have a "final ending" to it.
Here's a link to the website/company:
http://www.absolutecomfortonsale.com/latexfoam.htm
So, I did lots of homework before buying latex, and I have a good general idea about latex beds. I spent numerous hours in retail stores getting the feel for latex, knowing I am going to purchase online anyways, yet I failed, miserably, at fully comprehending what their (above) site said/offered. So after lots of online store price comparing, I decided to go with "absolutecomfortonsale", and I fell into the trap of "natural" latex, and I assumed that it was going to be premium quality latex, not a blend of Dunlop/Talalay or mixed with petroleum, because it says it does not contain synthetics. Upon further research from this message board, that might not be the case to this...
