Re: Brylane Latex Topper - Lynn2006
Mar 7, 2008 3:34 PM
BeddyBye & Cloud & McCldwll, What ever the reason is, the Brylane Topper is softer and thicker when I lie on it so to get the support my back needs since the car accident I had to go firmer underneath.

I slept well with the approx. 45 ILD underneath me again with the 38 ILD under that and the 36 ILD under that. I tried the other side of my bed for 15 minutes in the morning and it was a little softer and bothered my lower back with the 1" topper over the 44 ILD over the 34 ILD over the 35.2 ILD. Hence, I am thinking of asking Dave if he would exchange my two softer 36 ILD's (that are averaging 24 and 35.2) for two 44 ILD's so I can put a 44 ILD on the bottom with a 36 or 38 in the middle and a Super Firm...

Not sure what you mean by "normal" latex.

There are 3 types that I know of and the other 2 are Dunlop and "jungle" latex.

I don't have great experience with either of these but from what experience I have had, I liked both better than Talalay.

I actually liked the "jungle" latex best of all, but admittedly I never slept on it, only layed on it for a few minutes.

Actually I'd like to find a cheap source of some decent "jungle" latex but everyone seems to be selling Talalay or Dunlop these days.

Jim, I was under the impression there were only two kinds of latex, Talalay and Dunlop, and that jungle latex was natural latex made by the Dunlop process that was manufactured in Sri Lanka or other Asian countries.

Anyone else have a take on this?...

Have you tried any of the DOWN pillows made by Pacific Feather Co. sold at Costco stores? I LOVE mine! It was $34.99 for a standard size. It has just enough down inside not to be too firm and yet definitely supportive. I can manipulate it in any shape to conform to my neck and head. I don't care for latex pillows at all. I do have this one with shredded latex, but I still prefer down or down-around (feathers inside) pillows over that:

Dunlop the older, simpler, cheaper manufacturing process which allows slabs to be manufactured near source (i.e., slang "jungle"), as opposed to the quality controlled, larger manufacturing facility Dunlop made in UK, US, etc.. The jungle dunlop probably all natural, while that made elsewhere not necessarily....

Jim--

The tm is on the name "OrthoTex Latex," which lets them call the PU foam base OrthoTex Latex base foam. Clever. (always watch out when you see "Latex" capitalized.

The interchangeable/modular base support system is what I was proposing a month or so ago so I like the idea. However, that 15" "latex" mattress has only 3.5" of latex. And while they call it 100% organic (which means nothing) the fine print says the process "starts with" 100% natural, which really only promises a blend (not that that's bad, but a bit of snake oil if that's the case). Of greatest concern would be the warranty:

"What is not covered:
Conditions arising from normal wear and tear. (Conditions arising from normal wear and tear include, but are not limited to, mattress cover compression, foam compression or discoloration of components."

In the end, sounds like all they are warranting is that top stitching won't fall...
Re: Wool toppers - opinions / suggestions please - kimmcgov

We have a fleece wool pad with a cotton backing made by Natura. It is called the "Wool on top reversable topper". You can see it here:

http://www.eco-furniture.com/mattress/natura-wool-on-top-mattress-pad_3049_20.php

It doesn't add much, if any, cushion to the system though as the fleece mats down fairly flat. It does not sound as cushy as the one you have. It's definitely more of a mattress pad than a topper. It's kind of a nice feel on top of the different foam toppers we have tried and a natural, breathable barrier between us and any not-so-natural materials beneath. You could try your wool topper again by letting one half drape over the side as someone else suggested on another topper thread.

I can't imagine it would be very hard to remake your one topper into two, though. If you have a sewing machine or have a friend with a sewing machine, it's just one straight seam....

Jim, I ordered the zoned latex topper you mention from JCP as well as the PU Dream Coil topper. It is maybe 1.5 inches of convoluted/egg crate PU foam with a half inch of latex laminated on top. It seemed kind of soft directly on the mattress, but with a firmer layer, I'll try it again. All of these toppers need a slightly firmer base -- for my comfort level anyway. It could be just right for you though, along with perhaps one of your latex pieces.

A word of warning though: the PU foam is also perforated and some of the cores from the holes and little pieces of foam were still in the topper waiting to fall out and fly all over our bedroom when I took it out of the package. So take it out and shake it out outside or somewhere you won't mind...

I just found this on the net: www.zerogravitybed.com/index.php?action=item&id=2284

The only thing I am not sure of is this part:

"Modular Base Support Foam: 6.25" OrthoTex (tm) Latex base foam in a modular design offers superior support and comfort."

What the heck is "OrthoTex Latex" and how can they get a tm on latex?

But the general construction of the mattress looks pretty good, and they say they offer not only a 90 day return policy but also FREE SHIPPING FOR THE RETURN as well as free shipping to you. Hard to believe but if it's true, that's a pretty good deal.

Here's the make up of the bed:

"The Atlantis Mattress:

Made in the USA. Not your ordinary Latex Mattress.

 • Mattress Thickness: 15"
 • Mattress Cover: 2" Natural Organic Quilted Cover.
 • Talalay Latex Layer: 3.5"
 • OrthoTex Layer: 2"
 • Modular Base Support Foam: 6.25" OrthoTex (tm) Latex base...

Don't judge a sheet by the thread count number!

You first need to understand what creates the softest hand, the finest drape, the most lustrous finish, and the world's most luxurious linens , you must consider more than just thread count , which is a measure of the number of yarns woven into one square inch of fabric. Thread count is important, but it is only one part of the story. The quality of a sheet is determined by three other key components as well, but it all starts with the...
