Re: Latex Toppers - what ILD and what depth? - Lynn2006

Thank you for sharing. I appreciate all your responses which is a big help.

Now after packing up my 1.5" natural latex 24 ILD topper yesterday (did not yet send back), I am finding the 1" over the 36 over the two 44 ILD's to be perfect for my hips but I miss the cushion on my shoulders that I had with the 1.5" latex topper. I will call Dave before sending the other topper back to FloBeds.  I wish a zoned topper could be made that would be softer on my shoulders. My friend helped me put the 36  (not numbers on it since cut off so I have no idea what this latex core averages at) over a 39 (one of my 36's averaged to a 39) natural ID latex core over a almost 46 blended latex ILD (averaged 45.8) core.  The other side of the bed is...

D3Fi, I was wondering what latex core combination you ended up with since you and your wife seem to like very firm beds like me.  What latex topper thickness and ILD did you end up with?

Lynn,

We have a 32 ILD 2" natural topper on top of 38(nat)-38(nat)-44(blended).  My wife's side has the 44 in the middle.  At least 2 of the 38s are actually 40s however.  The entire test sticker was still on them and showed a 40 at all tested points.  Both sides are very, very firm.  My wife who always loved a soft bed actually ended up firmer than me (by moving the 44 to the middle) - go figure.  She like her just as it is.  I am 95% satisfied with my side though I would like a little more cush at the shoulder for side sleeping.  If we did it all over, now knowing that...

We now have a 32 ILD 2" natural topper on top of 38(nat)-38(nat)-44(blended).  My wife's side has the 44 in the middle.  Both side are probably extremely firm by most peoples' standards but it works for us.  I would like a little more cush at the shoulder for side sleeping but I don't find it awful.  I have a lot of back problems and I can't really have too much give or I wake up in excrutiating pain.  My wife says she is completely happy with her side as it is....

SleepEZ blended latex was LI the last time I checked--the natural latex was not. If in doubt just ask Shawn who the supplier is....

Another update -- and I don't work for IKEA; but they're having a sale right now. Bought my mattress in December, but I managed to claim a refund of the difference on my mattress purchase price without any hassle. 25% off is a pretty big deal!...

I like that you said it didn't feel as bouncy. Would I be able to get an XL Twin Dunlop in medium around 2" thick? Or does it have to be a lot thicker? I remember laying on a Dunlopillo mattress that my mattress guy had on the floor. It definitely felt firmer...almost like a "thud" when I laid on it, compared to a "boing" of the talalay. Maybe this is what I need to put over my springs to have the best of both worlds.

The Dunlop definitely thuds rather than boings. I found there so much latex information tilted toward Talalay that I sought out places that specialized in Dunlop.

I had good luck with this vendor. They told me they usually order medium in 32 ILD but they could order other ILDs for you. They do sell 2" and 3" Twin...

I can only really speak from my experience so far. I don't like the feel of memory foam or Talalay latex so I wouldn't choose either of them but it might work for you with fairly firm latex underneath. I'm not sure that it is as important to layer different firmnesses of Dunlop the...

Many here are latex enthusiasts but my wife and I tried flo-beds 4 years ago and after trying various combinations and toppers we just plain did not like the feel of latex.

So I would highly recommend you buy from flo-beds who will take it back if you can't handle it. Yes, you'll be out some shipping costs but that is better than getting stuck with a mattress you don't like.

I would also recommend trying to find a company that has both a good exchange / return policy AND that carries the Natural latex because the Natural latex does feel different, and after having tried 2 mattresses that were natural (in stores) they seem to have a better feel to us, than the Talalay which we did not like. I'll never know if we'd have liked the natural latex if we'd have bought one, but I do know that I am...

"In any case even if it's just the foam layer sagging on the mattress, placing a latex topper over it is only going to excentuate the sagging."

This thread is not about putting a latex topper over a sagging mattress. It's about a latex topper over a coil support system instead of over a latex support system, and how long the coil system will last. In such case, not only would the latex topper not accentuate the sagging since the latex would better distribute the loads, it would help prevent sagging in the first place. However, you would need to start out with a minimally padded coil mattress.
Further, while it is generally assumed that putting a latex topper over a sagging coil mattress won't help (like putting lipstick on a pig) that's not really true. While a uniform ILD topper won't work (think Princess and the...

Mattressmom, ,thanks for your reports and observations. I am researching what to buy and try for a new foam mattress.

I am glad to hear your positive experience with Dunlop latex because although we did not like Talalay latex, I think the natural Dunlop might be more to our liking, and I like that it has 2 variable densities.

What do you think about a 4" core of Dunlop with a 2" memory foam on top? Or a 2" super soft Talalay on top? This is what I am thinking of trying......
