Re: Latex Questions/Troubles - IanS

I'm sorry,

They got you with one of the oldest tricks in the book. 100% latex "core" means that somewhere in the middle of a bunch of PU or other cheap foams is a layer of latex. You could be sleeping on anything.

There are certain latex terms that are pure marketing. Anyone who tells you their mattress is 100% Natural, 100% Organic, 100% latex "core" only mean there is some kind of latex in your mattress, nothing more.

There are three things I try to remind everyone about latex hype.

1) There is nothing in nature or science that is 100% pure. Even refined gold is only 99.999 pure and latex is NOT an element nor 100% pure, EVER!

2) Latex is ALWAYS a man-made, processed, substance. It is about as natural as plastic. While it is true that latex can be made from natural ingredients...

Congratulations, may I ask if a foundation was included? is it off the floor?  Ikea sells several kind of bed and slats; and according to the bed experts here, type of foundation, slats, etc directly effects the sleep comfort.

Thanks...

Seems like I should go for somewhere in the 24 or 26 ILD range then. The companies that have this choice of firmness seem to be Sleeplikeabear.com and FoamSource. Can anyone tell me the difference (feel) between the blended Talatech latex and the 100% Talatech latex sold by foamsource.com? The blended is rated 24 ILD while the 100% natural is rated 22 - 26 ILD. The difference in price is only $30.00. Sleeplikeabear doesn't say on their website if their foam is a blend or not. Choices, choices... ...
Topper: Is 1 inch Latex enough? - kimmcgov

Hi, We have a new innerspring mattress (probably firm plush) that has good support but is a little too firm for me. I am a side sleeper and am still feeling a soreness in my hips. We also have a Natura wool and cotton mattress pad (looks a little like sheepskin). My question is: would one inch of latex under the wool pad add enough cushion to relieve the pressure point in my hips? And would 32 ILD be the right firmness or should I go a little softer? OR... do I really need 2 inches (and what density)? I'm afraid of it being TOO cushy as right now we are using a 2 inch memory foam topper that I think is not very good quality as I end up in a sink hole by the morning with my back just killing me. I am 5 foot 7 and 130...

I initially had the mattress temporarily plopped on top of my futon, and all that on top of a futon frame. As expected, it was extremely cushy -- interesting as it felt extremely gooshy (technical term) but not uncomfortably so.

I now have it on its final resting place on IKEA birch slats with adjustable lumbar support, and it is considerably more firm. The slats themselves are on a custom platform that I built myself.

Beyond the slats, I don't believe a foundation would have any effect on the performance or feel of the bed as the mattress is completely supported by these slats....

I thought I'd report back in after a couple weeks of sleep testing -- LOVE my IKEA Latex Mattress!

I just had my housewarming last night, and I've received many many compliments and offers for roommates after my friend had a chance on the bed. Ahem. But yes, it's definitely a keeper! Latex mattresses are brilliant, brilliant!

I've been sleeping without a topper and it's fine. There is a bit of goosh even without a topper and the support is wonderful. Money well spent!...

Savvy Rest report - mattressmom

After lurking here and other places and doing lots of research - I finally recieved my latex mattress today. I'd like to add to the discussion by sharing my experiences with a company I haven't read about on this forum and about Dunlop latex. We went with a three layer 100% DUNLOP (yes, Dunlop, not Talalay) mattress from Savvy Rest via The Natural Sleep Store. We got a queen size with split firm (ILD 40), medium (ILD 35) and soft (ILD 30) layers. The cover is made of organic cotton quilted to organic wool. The total was $1849 including shipping - more than SleepEZ or some of the other online retailers but less than other organic latex mattresses. We got free UPS shipping through The Natural Sleep Store (which would have been $219 from Savvy Rest directly) plus a gift certificate for $160.00 that could be used toward bedding at their...

It is a named Sleep-n-Aire, here in Santa Monica, CA. They make their own mattresses with natural latex from Latex International (so they say...). The owner said a bed is not returnable -but they came and took the bed back to put in a different, firmer top. That bed is now here with me, but still he is saying the mattress will soften up in the first 30-90 days. He seems to be working with me, but I just don't know if I can trust them... Here is their website description of their Latex line (bottom of the page)... http://www.sleepnaire-sm.com/mattresses/

My question is should there be a 'breaking-in' period for the bed, where it softens up/feels lumpy before reaching a stable, non-lumpy point? The Mattress I now have still is not the mattress I laid on in the store - that was the bed I wanted...
