Wife and I are both side sleepers. Wife is ~135lbs and I'm 165lbs.

I was able to find the specs on my current mattress searching this forum :). We currently have a 32ILD 6" dunlop base with a 26ILD 2" talalay topper with a 1 inch wool cover. Specifically we have http://thenaturalsleepstore.com/products/natura-eco-haven.html.

I think we could both use with a bit softer mattress as I believe the 2" topper doesn't provide enough cushion before hitting the 32ILD base. No back pain from it, but not quite as soft as I think we'd like. Looking at my own follow up post to my last mattress, I was kind of wishing it was a 3" 26ILD topper.

I'm not stuck to 9" anymore. I thought I had a great deal on a 9"...

I would recommend latex mattresses, as they are natural and good for the lower back health. It cools your body. Though latex mattresses are not that popular as memory foam mattresses, the soft core of latex may not suit every users. Some people are actually allergic to latex, which makes things worse. I second to Michael's suggestion.Your sleeping style and preferences do matter when it comes to buying a mattress. But if you are not allergic to latex, then it is the best material for the mattress. Latex has a natural ability to resist the microbes and other allergens. Also, latex mattresses aregopod for pressure point relief. Any mattress with a layer of latex at the top, makes a comfortable sleeping surface. You experience less heat. If you want a memory foam layer, you can choose to buy a hybrid mattress with latex...

Thank you for the feedback. I am going to feel some different latex densities today and then will make a final decision, but will likely go with 6" to start. I will update after I finish the projects....

It's possible - I'm getting ready to make a pair of twin XL mattresses and at times have seriously considered cannibalizing mattresses for parts!
Here's one option for other support latex layers: http://www.diynaturalbedding.com/product/custom-latex/

I will say I researched quite awhile before making decisions. One decision is hubby is building me a trial box - one I can layer elements in and at least get a general idea of whether areas need to be more firm vs more cush before sewing it together. If necessary, I may make 2 encased cush layers, with an encased support layer in the middle.

My story:

I purchased my first latex mattress a week ago from a local and very reputable factory direct latex mattress store in Phoenix, AZ. I had been wanting a latex mattress for years and have been researching and fully educating myself on all aspects of latex mattress for the past couple months. I tested all kinds of latex mattress in the store before purchase and also went to 2 other competitor stores. I felt comfortable with the Otex certifications of both the blended talalay and the nature talalay. I went with blended talalay with three 3 inch layers in a king size. The company I purchased the mattress from was top notch and I still feel fully confident they are a great and reputable latex mattress company

When the mattress was delivered I decided to help them assemble the mattress and latex layers. A while after they left I felt my...

The core of your mattress is very important. A high quality core will give you years of long lasting support. A poor quality core will sag and indent after a short period of time and the mattress will not last as long. A 100% natural latex mattress is the best. One where both the core and the top layer are 100% natural latex. One with no blends or synthetics. It is the most resilient and lasts the longest over time without sagging. A foam base is cheaper and not as supportive. Any mattress with a foam base will not last as long as those with 100% natural latex bases. Trust me, I have been through many mattresses and I have learned through trial and error. I have done a lot of research & testing. ...
