I hope this doesn't come across as abrasive.  But does your girlfriend know that shearing wool off of sheep is the equivalent of giving a human being a hair cut? It actually makes the animal more comfortable. The alternative to using sheeps wool as a fire retardant layer is using petroleum based products....if you don't think using oil based products in a bed is animal cruelty just tell her to go look at pictures of the gulf oil spill.

I am sorry if this sounds rude of me to say, I don't mean to offend.  But I guess I am just saying that there is perhaps no perfect solution, the benefits of sleeping with sheeps wool are vast. It is one of the only materials proven to help people actually sleep deeper/better as it helps to steady your heart rate.  Rest comes easier and is more efficient.

Durability of pocket coils? - Dallasgirl

Hi all-- as we progress, I'm doing my due diligence on pocket coil systems as well, as an option to consider along with foams and such. I'm specifically reasearching the Berkeley Ergonomics beds, but generally other high quality pocket coils as well.

A have a number of questions that I'm hoping you can shed some light on regarding quality. I've learned that the Berkeley Ergonomics "Willow" or "Alpine" model is as follows:
- 1530 pockets coils for a king- they are honeycombed like the attached photo.
- Since it's honeycombed, some are taller & others shorter. I believe the shorter rows are ~13.75 gauge & the taller rows are ~16.75 gauge. (2.1mm & 1.4mm since they are German coils)
- Coil tensile strength is 1900-2100N/mm2 (not sure what this means) Re: Keetsa natural mattresses - opinions? - numbernine

I had the Keetsa Pillow Plus. The bad news: 2" crater. The Good news: They REALLY stand by their product.

As far as customer service and people they really can't be beat. In fact they're so great that I feel somewhat guitly posting this.  Unfortunately the mattresses are another story.

Keetsa is essentially clever marketing. Poly foam with green tea extract in it is STILL poly foam. Not that i object to poly foam but don't be led to beleive that its an all green 100% product.

Very long story short: I returned my Keetsa for a full refund due to rapid onset of a 2" crater. I weigh 110 lbs and was sleeping on it average 4 out of 7 nights a week. The crater was 1.5" deep within six months.

It WAS a very comfortable mattress. Looked good, even smelled...

Keetsa natural mattresses - opinions? - sianspheric

Hi guys,

Any opinions on Keetsa mattresses?

I made a post on here a while ago about my girlfriend and I looking for a mattress that met some solid eco-friendly / natural / organic qualifications

We've done extensive research on brands like Essentia (pretty decent organic qualifications but very verrrrry expensive), also brands like Natura, Greensleep, Soma.

There are only a few stores here (Toronto, Canada) that actually have showrooms/floor models of beds by these companies we can actually lie down on.  Some of them have some ok organic/natural credentials but are also in the $2500-$3500 range for a King mattress (which we are looking for.

But today just discovered Keetsa, who appears to be a major manufacturer of these green/eco/organic type beds.  The ones we are looking at is their "tea leaf" line.  I know these are a mix...

The other day some friends of mine told me that they recently got a new mattress and absolutely love it. They purchased an iComfort Revolution at SleepCountry Canada. This got me thinking about our own 12-14(?) yr old foam mattress, and that it might be time to replace it. It is a "Cloudrest" which I bought from a local foam place; it was a pretty high-end mattress in it's time, and has served us well. It is 8" thick, and sits on a 7" wooden box frame (which is covered in thin foam), and sits in an "Arts& Crafts" (aka "Mission") style solid oak bed frame.

After several hours of research on the internet, my head is spinning. I couldn't believe that there are forums just about mattresses!

Anyway, I...

I believe if you find the DreamFit 3 sheets they are Pima Cotton. Knowing that 90% is american cotton it is good to know that most Egyptian cotton sheets are just a percentage... having said that, I do know the staple is long (not extra long)... I do not remember at all the difference in actual length, but I assure they are not 2-ply sheets. I have had them for about 2 years (maybe 2-1/2) and I have not felt any difference in the quality or getting "thinner" as I wash and use them... I stopped selling these sheets about 6 or 7 months ago (company is not carrying them) but i still love them and am sleeping on the celadon (green) at the moment.

it looks like we might go for a Sealy Natural Origins

for a few reasons:

1. it isn't made of wool, my girlfriend is a vegan and she would prefer the bed not be made of any animal products.  "Organic" wool might be something she would consider, but that's not something I am seeing advertised often, even with the "eco friendly" etc mattress companies

2. the natural origins line isn't the $4000 we would spend on an essentia.

any other opinions, the real challenge for us is finding stores in Toronto (which isn't small city) that actually carries organic mattresses that are not made...

Re: Price expectation for a Twin 100% Natural Latex mattress? - GuyMakesSense

I will hopefully help by taking this one-step further:

When you say 100% natural latex are you saying:

  • I want 100% of the material in this bed (except the covers/quilting) to be made of latex rubber... OR
  • I want whatever latex is used to be 100% natural vs. blend or synthetic latex?

This is a HUGE tactic the mattress industry uses to confuse and therefore sell more beds that are not what  the custoemr wants. If you want all latex (with merely a binding cover for look, etc) yo will pay more than if you want 100% natural latex in the top 2" while the rest of the bed is made of some polyurethane variation base/core foam. I sell latex mattresses and have dealt with a number variations on this. Here are a few pointers:

Please suggest a US retailer. I stay in Dallas, TX. Do you know a local store that carries them to try out?

Another concern is for dust mites. There are conflicting reports of wool being dust mite barrier. Some say it attracts dust mites! My son could be allergic to dust mites too, not sure unless we do an allergy test. What is your recommendation or experience regarding dust mites? Do you recommend a dust mite mattress cover for this organic mattress?

Thanks again.

I do not have info about the retailer, but the dust mites I can give some info on:

  • Dust mites burrow straight down in their environment
  • Dust mites are everywhere
  • Most people are not allergic to dust mites (but rather to their feces and exoskeletons after they die)
  • When dust mites colonize a bed their entire life-cycle is found in the area so you get it all (some reports have a queen size bed almost doubling in weight over 10 years)
  • Dust mites live off of the bacteria on our skin cells (not on our skin cells, which is a common misconception)...
