I'm also looking into a bed from http://originalmattressfactory.com.  User TC2334 posted a recommendation for their Orthopedic Extra Firm. TC2334 has a 400lb friend who is happy with the bed.  There are a number of posts here stating that Original Mattress Factory builds quality beds the old fashioned way.  I might end up visiting the showroom to try this mattress.  I could by a lot of foam and topper for same price though...

If there's an OMF showroom near you, then you might as well go try out their mattresses. You might find one you like, or your visit might confirm your initial decision to go with a 50-ILD foam base. Either way, it's good.

Catherine, thanks for your help. Judging from your posts, you're most qualified to answer!

You're welcome. I might actually be the least qualified to answer, though, considering that I still can't get my own bed comfortable.

We've tried both the egg crate and memory foam toppers; not much help- not the "springy" effect we're looking for.  I've almost convinced myself that a flippable innerspring mattress (if I can find one) with good quality "innards" (coil count, guage, etc.) topped with a latex topper (you suggest 19 ILD from SLAB, right?) is the way to go.  I'm trying to stay from the fancy pillow top, plush, etc. mattresses; I'm aftraid they'll form indentations within a couple of months.

What part of the country are you in? (And are you in the US or Canada or...?)...

Well, that makes sense. Thanks for the info.

Sure wish I'd known about that CSD tool months ago. Although even now that I know about it and have used it -- twice -- I'm a tad lost. The zoning I'd need for back sleeping is different from the zoning I'd need for side sleeping, and lately I've been sleeping on my back a lot more.

Both designs start with 2" of 14 ILD under the shoulders -- and I have 14ILD (in a full-size piece) and don't actually like it. Thought I did, at first, but would prefer 19 or so now.

I needed soft near my shoulders...

Sall, what configuration did you use for zoning? (I looked around and didn't see a post about it; if I missed it, feel free to just point me in the right direction.) My limited attempts have been abysmal so far, so of course I'm curious about what is working for other folks.

I actually tried to mimic the Custom Sleep Design model that they sent me with what I had on hand.  I needed soft near my shoulders and used a 14 ILD (2 inches) for my upper body, and used 2 inches of 22 for my hips on down.  Under that 2 inches, I had 2 more inches of 22-24 ILD, and then a 32 ILD latex mattress from Original Mattress Factory (too hard for my shoulders).  It worked pretty well but when FloBeds...

You might consider buying a very firm spring mattress from a smaller firm like Original Mattress Factory & then getting a good latex topper.  Get one that can be flipped, so you can avoid creating impressions.

My husband and I have had some bad luck with mattresses these past few years ever sinde we upgraded to a kingsize bed. Out first king mattress was a horrid Sealy that sagged terribly just outside of the 3-year warranty. We replaced it withan Ikea Erfjord latex mattress which we are now returning because it's also sagging quite badly after a few months.

Anyhow, we're due for yet another new mattress but at this point we're so...

This is 10.5" 2.1lb memory foam. It is 6" High Density Foam Core and then 2 layers of 2" High Density memory foam. I am not sure why they layed it this way, but they have the higher compression foam on top at 15lb ILD and then 8lb ILD softer 2 inch under it. The 6" core is only 30lb ILD which is pretty soft for a support...

I posted recenlty about a Stearns & Foster purchased at Costco and informed the original poster that that particular foam bed was actually a name added to a Kirkland Brand bed... not even made at, near or by the Stearns company (which is owned by Sealy). that might be your issue. The other part of the plushness (as stated by another responder) is the more layers of material to make the bed soft, the farther in you sink. The farther in you sink, the warmer you will be.

Latex (atleast here  in America) is difficult because we Americans like softer, more plush, etc (think about how big the idea of a pillow top was for so many years) or we onlythink about "firmer is better for your back" which is inherently incorrect.

Thank you, Catherine, for your advice.  The information that you and others have posted is so helpful; it certainly makes my search easier by being more informed.

The Original Mattress Factory site looks interesting.  I would love to try out their mattresses, but their locations are too far from our home.  I'm 5'6", 130 lbs, husband is 5'9", 200 lbs with spinal disc problems.  His doctor told him yesterday to stay away from memory foam.  He said to buy a comfortable, cheap mattress with the mindset of replacing it in 3-5 years.  I prefer your mattress-surgery technique instead.  So, the search is on.  I tried one store yesterday, got the stats on one mattress that felt good.  It was an Englander "Sleep Edge E F" with pocketed coils, 884 coil count, 13.00 guage, 1" PU foam pad above coils, quilted bamboo top.  I like the pocketed coil feel,...

Latex is nice, & will likely sleep cooler, but the performance of quality polyurethane is underrated around here.

I just have to agree with Sara that once you find a setup that actually works for you, I'd stick with it.  Going max inflation, then fine tuning until it just starts to contour sounds great.  Unless the other problems, the split bladder & noise etc. you really just can't live with (maybe the brand name version is better in those regards?), then of course it's time to experiment.  The second setup you listed sounds better.  That 1" 12ild layer might as well not even be there under you, & especially if it's free shipping start with as few layers as possible- if it's all the same price getting them one layer at a time., &...
