randy: as you have probably learned from my posts, I currently sleep on a Serta Perfect Night (8 years old now).  I have not had any foam compression problems but I am only about 100 lb.  The issue I have had with mine is the zoning because I am very short waisted and my hips and shoulders aren't spaced out enough to fit properly within the zones.  When I contacted them to find out the exact spacing of the zones, I never got a response. I think this is pretty typical of Serta's customer service (not!) approach.   But, excect for the zoning issue, I find the coil system is very comfortable - mine has the "hinged" coils that are supposed to behave like pocket coils but are, in fact, joined together.  Prior to this mattress, I a Perfect Sleeper (cotinuous coil) but I ruined it by propping it up at the...

Stayed at hotel over the weekend that had Serta Perfect Sleeper, I am now trying to find out which one as it was perfect, for now I am giving up on both latex and foam, too many problems and none so far resolve the back issues.

I know these mattresses are known to wear out quickly, but at $1700, if it lasts 2 yrs and I dont have pain, I will take it.

First you need to know that this website does not send you an email update when someone has commented... or at least I couldn't or didn't find it, so you have to check back.  Second, search the forum for other's experiences under "lower back pain" latex toppers, etc., below.

The good news is that you have come to the right place to try to find a solution, because a lot of us here have tried about everything.  The bad news you already know, how difficult it is to find a good mattress when the industry does everything to hide what is inside, and that it is a very personal choice based on needs, weight.. back or side, lumbar problems, etc.

Before I get lenthy, many folks have made a too hard bed perferct or acceptable with just one inch of latex topper.  In fact, not long...

Several of us "longer termers"  (thinking JImsocal and sandman too)... have had any bed but mine syndrome.

I still pretty much have it after 20 mattresses($5k+ and many exchanges for actual slept on it at home experiences) and 100 topper combos of all kinds, sleep better for one night on hotel mattress in a wide price point from cheapies on up.  I couldn't get warm fuzzy confirmation from any hotel "THIS IS THE BED" you slept on and you can buy it from here.... kind of conifidence to add another $1000+ for just the mattress to my list of 20.

Doesn't say a lot for the mattress industry, does it?

I think I am narrowing down what will ultimately work for me :relatively thin (2-3 inches max)  layer of quite soft latex (have 14 ILD from Sleep like a bear will arrive any day...

Sorry to hear about your problem: bed doesn't feel like it did in the showroom.    This blog is the absolute best at learning about mattresses and toppers and what to do about it.    Some of us here have many mattresses, toppers, and thousands of hours and dollars invested just trying to get a good nights sleep too, unfortunately, so you are at least in good... tired company. wink

For me, that is over 20 mattresses bought (many exchanges wheedled out of several suppliers), over $5k, 75 toppers, and thousands of hours pouring over this blog and another good one ccmattress.com, Peter Cancelli's blog from his NJ store.  I am 170 lb M, side and back sleeper, 60, with lower back pain.  I am not the best guide, because I am still searching for "better" but right now I am sleeping on 2 x 1...

Hi Jim,

Just read last few entries of this post.  I have lower back lumbar issues from injury, am both a side and back sleeper and have been down a $5-6k road of mattresses, latex and MF toppers from Foambymail.com, overstock.com, and Sleeplikeabear.com.

Sorry for the rambles but don't want to spend the time to make this a treatise.

The back/side sleep and lumbar problem seem nearly insurmountable.  Add to that, for me, Mem foam sleeps hot, and while it feels good at first when I lie on it, when I sleep on my back, I wake up in severe pain.  I interpret what happens is that my back "feels" that my butt is not being supported, so it "works" to hold up my butt and is tired as hell when I wake up... in agony.

So,  I have been trying to...

Sorry SleeperJohn....didn't mean to hijack your question.

I weigh about 260lbs and my wife weighs about 160lbs we are both primarily side sleepers but my wife sometimes sleep on her back.

Our mattress is a worn out Serta Perfect Night, king size, non pillowtop, firm(?), I've been researching latex beds that will satisfy both our preferences in firmness and comfort. My wife fell in love with a $7K Pranasleep mattress but because of the price tag I'm going to try to replicate its' firmness and comfort elsewhere.

One of the things touted by the Prana salesman was its use of Outlast in the cover material, Outlast is a phase change material which is suppose to help you be cooler when it's warm and warmer when it is cold.    I chose to replicate this by purchasing a 2" Celsion topper from Sleeplikeabear.com. This "layer" is...

Thanks for the reply...some more info on me: I am a 5'6", 135-pound female. DH is 6'4" and about 230. We are currently sleeping on a Serta Perfect Sleeper that is 10 years old and the springs are shot (verified through my "mattress surgery" yesterday), so the mattress is sagging in the middle considerably.  I have back pain when sleeping on the sagging mattress, but we did a temporary fix last night by building up the box spring with blankets folded up and placed vertically along the middle of the box springs. Clearly not ideal, but I am desperate for better sleep, and this morning I did not wake up with a back pain.

Friends

I'm glad to have found this forum, fantastic!cheeky

I am looking to invest in a good long-term bed for me and my wife. Off late we have run into sevral issues. Here's my short story and I look forward to a good recommendation.

Me is 37 years, 6'3" tall, 185 lbs, side sleeper (mostly, but lie on back too). She is 33 years, 5'11" tall, 200lbs, tummy sleeper (sleeps on side and back too).

We have this (serta, crappy? - SEE BELOW FOR SPEC) bed that I had paid $1300 5 years back. Now it seems like there a constant curve/crater on both sides at our butt region. I am assuming this is causing back pain to both of us.

while my wife complains of backache, once...
