Comparable.  What I liked about them compared to Hastens was (1) a latex topper doesn't need to be massaged, (2) I think I reacted badly to horsehair the one night I slept on a Hastens.

I fell dead asleep for over an hour in the Conneticut showroom on a Carpe Diem, and as you know from my posts here, I haven't had a lot of success with latex yet their latex topper was just fine - maybe something to do with the spring system underneath??.

sandman, is there a Carpe Diem dealership in your area?  They basically have a spring system very similar to the Hastens (both Swedish companies) but use a Talalay latex topper instead of the horsehair/cotton. I liked them better than the Hastens but to import one into Canada was just out of the question for my budget.

I came very close to buying a Hastens after trying them in a showroom for the better part of the day and loving them there.  But given I was looking at over $10,000 I decided to spend the money and fly to a city with a hotel that had one in one of their rooms.  Glad I did.  I did not sleep well.  I had to take the topper off part way through the night, my back was stiff in the morning, and I woke up congested.  The room didn't appear dusty (it was the Chicago Peninsula, no less, so doesn't get much more chic-chic than that!) so I had to assume that I was maybe sensitive to the horsehair - who knows.  All I can say is that I am glad I spent the $1000 that trip cost me to keep me from making a $10,000 mistake.  And just goes...

Yes, I think any wool pad compresses with time. Heck, even Hastens tells you to massage their expensive horsehair/wool toppers.   But the Dormier one is washable, so the washing and drying restores the loft.  With our non-washable Naturas I tried putting them in the dryer to restore loft but it never quite did the trick.  In fact, what my husband noticed was that the mattress was feeling firmer over time with the compressed Natura.  We got it before Natura came out with a washable one.  So, I'm not slagging Natura, I'm just suggesting whatever one chooses, choose washable.

Kimberly, I don't think budgy was suggesting the duvet go on top of the mattress (although I have used that trick to soften up our lake bed).  I think he meant if you already have a pad on the mattress that maybe re-evaluating what your daughter is sleeping under as a possible...

update on coil systems. spoke to Legget and Platt on the phone. asked if they could sell me an offset coil system in 12 1/2 or 12/3/4. said they could not do it, but recommended gold bond top of the line called Premier series, which has a good box in the 9 1/2 range and a 12 2/4 gauge offset coil system. tons of PU foam, however. also King Koil makes a series called Extended Life intended for heavier weight folks with a coil system of that gauge. some of the Sealy's are also 12 3/4, but only 338 coils for a full. All of these will run 1200 to 1500 new and all are stacked with bad foam, some with one inch of latex. for that price one can buy a handmade Beckley in a full size, so unless I can find one...

Update:

Good news. I spoke with Sears and they told me that they are going to treat this as a defective mattress.

Therefore, whether I do an exchange for a different model or decide to return the mattress for a full refund, I will not be charged any pickup/delivery fees, or restocking fees. Of course, if I pick out a different mattress, I pay (or get credited) the difference in price,  but the original transaction is maintained, so that the 18 months at 0% financing on my purchase stays in effect. It took numerous calls and transfers to speak with a customer service rep who had the authority and responsibility to give me a definitive answer, but now that I have it, I think that's very fair policy from Sears. They also granted me a couple additional...

Re: Getting rid of a Hastens bed - Rosstamon

The topper is made out of horsehair. It's weird. When you are crawling into bed the mattress is more squishy and feels like a giant pillow, but once your weight gets distributed, it really firms up. The bed definitely needs a topper of some sort, so I'll start looking at a replacement for the Hastens one. I guess I just found my guest "bed".
