Just a word on the warranties.  I looked into making a claim with Serta but I soon realized that there was no way that I would get this covered.  My understanding is that there has to be a significant depression in the mattress (2 inches?) when there's nobody in the mattress.  My mattress looks great when there's no pressure on it.  It's only a problem when you get in and hit bottom.  There's also a small juice stain which voids the warranty for hygienic reasons.  I think that it's funny that they didn't have a problem taking my old stained mattress away when they sold me the new one but now it's hazardous to their employees to handle a mattress with a juice stain!

Warranties are pretty much useless. Manufacturers will do anything to get out of honoring them. As Warehouse...

I was just reading about Sertas...their springs don't last long.  They only have two turns and I think aren't tempered.  Try a LOT of beds and try to find one that has good springs, feels fine, and not too soft.  The softness becomes sag.

I would second what Gene wrote.  I have a 5-year-old Serta Perfect Sleeper and it's not anywhere near "perfect" anymore.  It's a Eurotop and It started out great.  Soft on the top and firm underneath but now it's horrible.  I wake up every morning feeling like I spent the night in a hammock.  If I stand on the side of the bed and push with my hands in the area where I sleep I can easily create an 8 inch crater without much resistance.  This lack of support has led to back problems and I've finally had enough.  Maybe I got a bad copy of this mattress but you can find many of the same stories if you search here and elsewhere on the internet.  BTW, both my wife and I are average size.

I'm going with a new latex bed but if you want to go the more traditional route...

The wife and I drove past a Verlo mattress outlet today and didn't even realize it was there.  This place is about three minutes away from my house and it took my 6 year old son to figure out that we need to stop there.  He was the one that pointed it out.

Anyways, I stopped in and I think found the perfect mattress.  It was quite firm but the salesman said that that is the most firm build that they made for the showroom and he could make it a bit softer by adding a layer of latex.  Does anyone have any experience with this brand?  The factory is locate (made in wisconsin) and it seems to be a factory direct store.  The prices are pretty reasonable as well.

Thanks,

Gene....

Hello,

My wife and I were at Sears yesterday and after trying many different mattresses she really liked this one.  It is the Serta Perfect Sleeper Reese Eurotop (Elite collection).  We also went to Colders and I really liked the Serta Vera Wang with the eurotop.

These are around the same price range but I don't really understand how they rate.  The Reese also comes with a 20 year warranty were the Vera is only 10.... I think... Maybe.

Oh well, if anyone can suggest which one of these is the better bang for your buck that would be  great.  I was also wondering what the thoughts out there are about the W hotel heavenly bed?  This is another option however I don't know where to find a place to actually try it out.

Thanks in advance,

Gene.

My biggest surprise of your post due to our own personal experience and what we have read online by others is that you folks have survived for 17 years using the same innerspring mattress!!

My bride and I had terrible innerspring mattress experiences and switched to waterbed mattresses about 22 years ago (still love 'em!) but my commercial sounding waterbed mattress posts can be found all over this forum so I won't repeat unless you ask me to why we believe the waterbed mattress is a great alternative to other mattress types.

Online statistics seem to show that only about 60% of innerspring mattress owners are happy with their mattresses which means that close the 1/2 are NOT happy.   YIKES - before we bought our latest waterbed mattress a few months ago we spent about four months visiting all the area stores and testing every mattress we  could find - spring, memory...

Your problem is why it is an issue that so very few mattresses allow the user to adjust firmness.  The user has to try and home engineer a firmness increase or decrease with a "forklift" change via trial of different types and thicknesses of mattress toppers.  We see the problem with this "fix" is the expense up front to buy the topper without the buyer having any assurance that it will be the right "fix" for their sleep comfort needs.

So you try one topper and if it doesn't give you the comfort you need then you have to try something else.  It's a shame that only inflatable mattresses and waterbed mattresses come with firmness adjustability built in.

We know someone who bought a four inch Serta memory foam topper and loved it.  We bought a three inch Cloud9 semi-firm memory foam topper and combined with our waterbed mattress it is perfect for both...

Re: How much extra would you play for 64 coils? - imjay

When we were researching mattresses we found a few sites that had similar information which I have quoted as follows:

"A full-size mattress should have at least 300 coils, a

queen size should have about 400 coils, and a king size

should have about 480 coils.

If you find an innerspring mattress with a coil count

below 300 for a full-sized mattress, it is generally of poor

quality. On the other hand, you can get too many coils in an

innerspring mattress. When the number of coils is increased,

the size and thickness of coils are decreased, thus reducing

firm support. Extra coils, however, do not necessarily

enhance the longevity or performance of a mattress. It is the

design of the coils and their arrangement that is more important."

We also learned that the gauge should be no thinner than 13 and the number of turns...

Don't know about CostCo.  Sams sells the lower or entry level of Serta - The Perfect Sleeper.

Our research seemed to show that firm mattresses are not necessarily good for someone with back issues or back pain.

My bride has developed multiple and degenerative/permanent back problems and we discovered that - for us - best and most reliable comfort to be found in a waterbed (Sam's sells a decent waterbed mattress but only online).

We believe that newer model mattresses with their 13 to 14 guage wire coils are going to show sag in just a few years and spring and foam mattress prices are not to be believed.

Unless you have sharp clawed cats that prowl on your bed or sleep with sharp objects modern waterbed mattresses are well engineered  and well made.  We have had two mattresses in over 22 years with total costs of just $550.00.  Our current one is 8...

So far as Serta  goes pay no attention to the model name in any store as all big retailers have different model names for the same grade mattress.

The Perfect Sleeper is the base model for Serta.  The Perfect Day is the high end group - Vera Wang, best we can tell, relates more to cosmetic things like fancy fabrics and etc. but nothing to do with the foundation makeup.  Perfect Sleepers have 10 yr warranty while Perfect Day have 20 Yr warranty - Perfect Sleepers Kings have 632 coils (Vera Wang or Not) while Perfect Day Kings have like 1,173 coils.

We thought we wanted to try a new mattress and did so much research and found we keep going round and round the same circles of bad or incomplete information.  Fact is, 40% of owners of ALL makes of inner-spring mattresses are not happy with their  purchase and don't like...
