Re: What Happened to Quality? Any Good Brands Left? - IanS

This is the sad, sad reality almost all of us realized and the reason we hang out on this forum even years after our purchase. The current mainstream mattresses are not made as well as they were 5 years ago, much less 20. Just try to buy a two-sided mattress with a real box-spring with springs.

Fortunately there are some companies still making good mattresses. Unfortunately they are way too expensive for the average person and often sold in only one or two stores in the US. The list would include VI-Spring, Hastens, McRoskey, Relyon, the high-end Shifmans and also local brands like Charles H. Beckley and a few others. Most of these are still hand-made and high quality but can easily run $4,000 to $50,000 depending on what your looking at.

This is the reason so many choose to build their own all-latex mattress....

" What's the best mattress " is according to average consumers'
" knowledge and experience ".
If you search this forum, you will find references regarding Shifman and other brands.

Right now, there is a great deal of interest on Latex and foam mattresses as an
alternative to innerspring ones due to many appealing factors surrounding them and folks are simply exchanging their ideas and experiences....

Don't know the differences between the two, but I'd always go with the bed that is the closest to the manufacturer(fewer middle people if any).   Personally, I don't like the feel of pocketed coils, usually you can't even feel them unless you weigh a lot or somehow find a bed with less than 7" of padding over the springs.

Hey, Steve;
I know what you mean about Latex...no matter what they do, it just doesn't support me like I need.  I do believe that Latex has its place in the bedding...perhaps if you got a spring mattress that had a layer of cotton batting and then a zippered pillowtop area...you could use some of the foam there?!

Kait, last week I visited Bloomingdale's website and was surprised to see even a few high-end companies (like Shifman) using latex in their $15,000+ coil spring mattresses.  Personally I think it's more marketing than anything else, and what irks me is the amount of misinformation and outright disinformation being spread by manufacturers.  Even so-called "natural" latex is 60% artificial, petrochemical foam, yet consumers are told it's pure, green and eco-friendly.  Just outrageous....

Re: Temporary fix for coil mattress - JoJo

Imjay...no offense taken. You wouldn't be recommending a different kind of bed like say, a waterbed now would you? Also, I didn't say that I paid 7K for it, that is retail and I paid a lot lot less on close-out. I have to say again that my C&W mattress is incredible...all the benefits of springs IMHO and 5" of wool, cashmere, pink foams (whatever that is) and latex. Now that I propped it up from the bottom the body impressions are gone and it is right back to where it used to be. Heaven...supporting without pressure points. No tossing or turning, neither of us. Which is why I want to make sure that I don't damage the springs with my temp fix-it. Being a one sided mattress i am afraid that the springs are hooked, sewn into a base of some sort and I might wrench them out of...
This website is very misleading - Mattressmeister
May 10, 2009 6:19 PM
Likley my last thread.  "With all due respect", this website clearly is not in pursuit of discussing "what's the best mattress". It should "honestly" be called the, "The latex mattress forum". NO disrespect, but I have not seen to much discussion on other mattresses aside from latex. I will likely be getting a latex, but not a homemade or mail order version.

How can a sight called "What's the best mattress" not include threads on Shifman, Kluft, Royal Pedic and others?...

If many people on this forum are also having back issues why are so many leaning toward latex? Am I missing something? If not latex and regular coil S types are poor quality then what? A Shifman, Royal Pedic, Kluft, Airloom or other $3500+ mattress?

Let's take for example a Sealy Springfree Beachside which I have been reading so much about over the internets other mattress blog. Firm enough to support my back so I have read. If talalay latex on the top layer is not the answer as you suggest with a "healing" back, why not a latex core with a poly top? Now that I know I will only get 6-8 years out of a mattress, I am ok with that as long as it is comfortable during that time.

Getting a mattress with a voided warranty. For me the Jury is still out, but if I can get a latex set at 1/4 as...

Suggestions for mattress w/o memory foam pretty please . . . - snuckles
Jun 24, 2009 9:04 AM
Please help me, or at the very least point me to some past post or links.  I'm at my whit's end with this whole mattress thing.

All I want is a mattress that's not built with memory foam . . . that's all . . .

We spent all day Father's day looking at mattresses in the stores telling them we didn't want foam.  Turns out the mattress we were writing a check for had memory foam in it.  Ugh!

Anyway, I think Shifman makes mattresses without memory foam.

I saw a thread where IanS posted these manufactures as making "organic" beds

www.hastens.com
www.vi-spring.com
www.chbeckley.com
www.mcroskey.com
www.flobeds.com

I don't know that I'm looking for an "organic" mattress, all I want is a GOOD one without foam.  Does that mean organic?  Any thoughts on Shifman?

Thank you for reading my post and any suggestions that...
Relyon v. Shifman? - ConfusedOne
Jul 26, 2009 6:43 PM
After extensive research, we have narrowed our search down to the Relyon Empress v. Shifman Beekman Perfect Comfort.  Any disparity in quality of craftsmanship or materials between these two brands?  How important are individually pocketed coils?  Relyon has them, but Shifman does not.  Alternatively, how much more luxurious will the Shifman pillowtop (flippable) make the bed feel v. Relyon with no pillowtop? ...
