This is one of the reasons many people on this forum have turned to mattress kits and Frankenbeds. Manufacturers and merchants collude to prevent the consumer from knowing exactly what they are buying or from comparison shopping because the same mattress is sold under a different name at every store that carries it.  The manufacturers won't help you because they want to protect their merchant's "exclusivity." And most retailers are very cagey about exactly what's under the hood.

Occasionally you can find those cutaway samples that show you what the construction is but even if you do you'd have to find another one somewhere else to compare it. I've only come across one chain--Mattress Giant located on the east coast and midwest, that actually provided a detailed list of materials used in each of the mattresses they sell on their website. But they still play the exclusive name game.

If you have perused...

Don't buy a Serta or other S Brand mattress unless you buy a SUPER FIRM one and then put on your own topper.

But eventually even the layers of foam inside that will have to be replaced (one or two years, probably) so you'll have to do surgery.

Look here at what's inside these S brand mattresses:

Hello again, All!
Thanks to the people who answered my query and invitations for any and all others to share their knowledge of this company with me.
To BeddyBye, I appreciate your well wishes and your input.  It sounds like your friend was in the same boat I am in now.  I am simply tired of sitting by and watching the quality of mattresses go down, expectations go down, durability go down, and prices go up!  How long has your friend been in business?  I know the factory direct approach has worked in many other retail industries but I am not so certain of the feasibility of it with mattresses.  The Original Mattress Factory (from this point on, for the ease of typing, I will refer to it as OMF) has been around since, I think, 1990 and is owned by Ron Trzinski (sp?) who was the president of the Ohio...
Some Advice - MattressSalesman

Next to buying a tombstone, this is probably the hardest decision you have to make.  Sadly, there are many people in my industry who take advantage of people and give all of us a bad name.  I will try to remedy that with some honest advice.

For the most part, the advice given on the welcome page is solid.  Follow those guidelines and your experience will be a good one.  As far as the types of beds, you generally have firm, plush, and pillowtop.  For many years, people were told the firmer the better.  This could not be further from the truth!  That myth led to generations of back problems.  It drives me crazy when a person comes in and says my doctor or my chiropractor told me to get the firmest bed you have.  I usually tell them to get a new doctor!  For the people who do not walk out on...

Sam's sells poor pillowtop mattresses. The pillowtop will sag in a very short time. I've had a Sam's mattress: Serta PerfectSleeper Eurotop for only a year and it hammocks in the middle as many other people on this website have attested to the big "S" mattress company beds. I would advise getting a basic mattress without a pillowtop and getting a topper following the advice of many on this forum....

I am thinking of buying a Serta Perfect Sleeper without a pillow top and instead buying egg crate or 2" of PU foam to put on top of it from foambymail. We really like the coil system of the Perfect Sleeper for the support it provides.  Before we were married by husband bought a 3" memory foam topper from Overstock and put it on top of an old Simmons mattress. When we were married that whole system had to go. I hated the memory foam topper because when we laid next to each other we formed a canoe in the middle of the bed. Maybe I would like the memory foam but the 3" was just too much? We hate Visco memory foam even though it's better than the cheaper memory foam supposedly. That's why I was thinking of possibly putting 2" of PU foam or egg crate or both on...

Thanks so much for your advice! I've been reading more about what Bill is doing with building his own bed and I'm thinking of doing something similar. My husband and I really like innersprings though. I am thinking of buying a Serta Perfect Sleeper without a pillow top and instead buying egg crate or 2" of PU foam to put on top of it from foambymail. Does anyone know differences between the Serta Perfect Sleeper beds sold at Sam's Club vs. other stores like Colders?

My husband and I went to Colders yesterday and found the bed we want: Serta Perfect Sleeper Choice Edition Eurotop. It has 660 coils, 2.5 Ultrasoft Foam, Foam encased edges; Colders is sellling it for $1819.99.

I found a similar mattress at Sam's Club website: the Serta® Grandis Super Pillowtop Set for $998.00.

I was unable to determine what the differences were between the two so I called Serta. They told me that they didn't know what the differences were and that the composition of the padding they were unable to disclose to the public. They advised me to call the retailers. So I called Sam's and they couldn't tell me anymore than what Serta had written and is posted on the Sam's website which is very basic. I called Colder's and...

Help finding a not-so-expensive latex "plush" - speeder

I went around mattress shopping today for a queen. Stopped by Sleepy's, Ikea and Macy's. I would don't want to spend an arm and a leg but I was trying to get a bearing on what I would like to get.

At Sleepy's, I really liked the S&F 'Garden Grove' latex mattress for cool $1400 w/o box spring. It was plush on top, with a solid firm not-springy feel. I did not like the tempurpedic mattress at all. Sealy posturepedic 'Plus' were OK. I also liked the Miralux 'plush' but I read some reviews about them and will stay away.

I went to Ikea and checked out their latex mattress and was rather disappointed, especially for the price. For $900, 7" is simply way too skinny of a mattress. I don't know what the Ikea mattress is made of, or why the S&F Latex felt a million times different/better.

I also went to Macy's,...

I'm posting here because my 5-year-old Serta Perfect Sleeper isn't so perfect anymore.  My wife and I wake up every morning sleeping in a ditch and my back is now killing me.  We both like a plush mattress and after conducting a lot of research I have come to the conclusion that it is very hard to find a traditional pillowtop mattress that will not sag over time. We originally were looking at a tempur-pedic mattress but my wife doens't like the "stuck" feeling and I'm afraid that I'll be too hot.  Luckily I found this site and I would like to give props to all of you on this forum who have unwittingly assisted me with my search for a new mattress.  Based on the reviews here we decided to look at latex mattresses.

At first we were going to just order a Flobeds mattress because of the return/exchange...
