IMO the finest mattress sold in the USA today. I have now had my Hastens Naturally for almost 4 years and it has been wonderful except that I went with soft when medium would have been a slightly better fit for me. These mattresses are so comfortable you just want more and more, but you need to remember that most need the support of a medium.
The only real problem is the price. Back when I was auditioning them The prices ranged from $4,000 for a Naturally King to $11,000 for a 2000T which seemed obscene at the time but was doable if you went for a queen and made a deal. (I only paid $3400 for my Naturally Queen) Today at double+ those prices Hastens sadly seems to be only for the wealthy. This is particularly unfortunate as the "S" companies are only making complete junk...

Back at the hight of my mattress search I compared Hastens to Dux and Hastens won on both comfort and construction, but foam free was, and still is, very important to me. For others, your milage may vary, however at that price Dux is up against not only Hastens, but VI-Spring, McRoskey, Shifman, Hypnos and several other IMO superior companies....

I would say that almost all mattresses are made with Leggett & Platt coil systems, as well as other components. Sure, there are some like McRoskey who manufacture their own. But, most companies use those made by L&P. And, they also make the pocketed coils for Simmons. The mattress companies won't necessarily show the name Leggett & Platt. You can always ask the mattress salesperson (IF they even know!) Here is something I found online:
"Leggett & Platt makes innersprings for nearly all of the mattress companies, so essentially it is the same coil system in all of them. Leggett &
Platt is a diversified manufacturer that conceives, designs and produces a broad variety of engineered components and
products for customers worldwide. While Leggett & Platt may not be a familiar name to you, chances are you sleep on a bed

Besides Gardner Mattress, there is a local mattress manufacturer about 15 minutes from me that said they could make me a full size plush mattress for, if I remember correctly, less than $400. I don't know anything about this manufacturer and the quality of their mattresses, but the rep told me they make mattresses for some hotels. I'm interested in visiting their showroom just to see what kind of mattresses they offer. Shifman mattresses are sold in my area (most of the mattresses are above my price range), and they make an entry level mattress, but it has the bonnell springs...I'd have to add a topper because there's not much padding above the coils. I've read a little about bonnell springs, and I think there was something written about how bonnell springs get firmer with time as they compress more.
I've thought of the possibility of the combination of coils and latex. If I...

Hi LPAD. I have what I believe is a "good" coil mattress such as you are describing, a Shifman Rembrandt. It's filled with nothing other than tons of cotton and a very thin layer of latex on each side then tufted through. As a result it is very firm; in fact when I first got it, it was uncomfortable to sleep on without an additional comfort layer. But that was my plan anyway, and I soon got both a thick wool topper and a 2" med/soft latex topper which I use interchangeably. Had the mattress almost two years now and it looks more or less like it did the day I bought it, although it's softened up a bit. Still want a topper though!
As for toppers, I couldn't imagine going with more than 3" of anything; part of the reason for getting that firm mattress was to "feel"...

Hello, I have checked out your site for the last few months, and it is a really intelligent place to visit for info on mattress purchasing. I recently bought a new bed frame (still in boxes) that can be set up two ways, one allowing for boxsping and one without. I also ordered a mattress (Shifman) and boxspring and now I am wondering if I really need the boxspring. I believe the bed has about 8 horizontal slats. Do I need the boxsping? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Would save a bunch of money without boxspring.
Many thanks...

thanks everyone.
No, we don't have originalmattress near us. I looked at the Leggett Platt page however it would have been nice had I found a place where it shows what products use their springs. I'm sorry to say I still don't exactly know what defines a 'good' coil spring mattress as far as specifications go. Am I to understand that none of the big S companies offer such a thing (if you buy one with minimal padding)? I can't afford a Shifman or other handmade mattress. The only thing I think I understand is to stay away from the Simmons pocket coil system.
Our old S/F mattress still feels uber-firm to me, just sags, which I would think is mostly because of the padding failure but who knows.
I was hoping to find a brand that is readily available. If anyone has more input on this I'd still appreciate it. I still...

I dunno if it's the horsehair topper or the mattress/spring bedspring combo but it's a winner !
Whatever it is, I like it more than the Dux or Shifmans I tried
Love both the 2000T and Excelisor . The 2000T is like instant comfort and the Excelisor takes about 30 seconds for the comfort factor to sink in.....at a $8000 discount.
For those who have been in the same boat.....what other alternatives should I be looking it.
At this point, let's say 12 years at $1333 cost per year out of life of a good mattress, I'm willing to do that ........

I hear ya cloud. I must have slept through all of NYC ;-)
Did not like the Temperpudics at all.
The only foam one I liked was made by S&F. It was a ~plus~ firmness model .
On the springs, I tried the Shifman's, Hasten, and the Klufts.
2 of the Klufts I tried I like and the Shifmans, I did not get a full long test on them.
The *other* one in this OP was a mattress made in San Fran....don't want to start a flame war on them.
And crazy as it sounds, I was thinking about buying it sight unseen due to favorable reviews across the board.
I do agree there should be a shipping fee of some sort and more than $100 as shipping aint' free and I can
understand transit from CA all the way back to East Coast, and then the handoff to the *local trucking* company
is freight costs incurred, but...

How lucky you are to be in Southern CA! (I'm from there, but now am up in No. Ca). You have a chance to go to Custom Comfort Mattress Store and try out 2 sided mattresses! If you've read anything about anything here, you'll find that most of us agree that the one sided mattresses that have been on the market from about 2003 to now, are CRAP. Most of us have spent $$$ on some brand or another that only made 1 sided mattress beds, and have come away losing all the $$ we spent. No matter how expensive, they are all cheaply made ca-ca.
That said, I have not had the chance to come down to Southern Ca to try out Custom Comfort beds myself, but they do have a website, and their website actually has photos of all the mattresses they carry, with descriptions. There has to be...
