Seems like a reasonable conclusion after so much trial and error.

After many combinations, my G/F fell in love with the PLB Nature with the PLB 2" latex topper. It's a bit too soft for me, of course, but it seems to give us a starting point.

Too soft for him... I agree, the 36 ILD core lets the 4" comfort layer sag:

I'm no expert, but it sounds like it does not provide enough support... too soft.  Reaading about it... and it's not certain what 'it' is in the mattress industry... it sounds like it is memory foam on pocket coils.  And since you chose the 'Eurotop plush', it probably has extra soft layers on top.

Also, now that your body is sore, you may be noticing that your relative's spare beds are not so comfortable... i.e. you'll notice sleeping a few nights on them.

The basic mattress functional model is comfort layers over support core layers.  The comfort layers contour to and cushion your body, relieving pressure points and distributing your weight a bit over the support core layer.  The support core layers hold up your weight so that you do not sag and strain and become eternally internally sore.  The most basic support layer is the floor......

They do sell organic Dunlop latex. are you saying they only ship talalay? I am a bit hessitant to order from them as they use Joma wool in the encasements, which isn't organic. I want to be as absolutely sure as possible that the wool is of the purest and least toxic quality as possible. Also, their checkout system is a bit shady. I entered my shipping info during checkout just to see if I was able to view the shipping cost. I didn't enter my credit card info on the next page and didn't proceed any further. I then received an email stating I had a payment pending for the order they received. I immediately called them and told them I didn't want to place an order and just wanted to check the shipping fee.

Yes, they do sell/ship Dunlop... I...

Well, that's the point of using pocketed coils -- to have them conform to your body -- isn't it? But without the feeling of being beaten by a roll of quarters, I'd hope. (Great analogy, by the way. The pocket coils in my low-end Simmons mattress are 13 gauge, and they might be a tad too sturdy for me 'cause I'm such a lightweight.)

Yes, I agree that the intent of individual coils is to contour to the body, but there is more to consider than just their profile response.

Specifically, how the body's weight is distributed (pressure relief) across the coils, and in particular, across neighboring coils when some coils are carrying much heavier bearing points like shoulders and hips or butts than that of their immediate neighbor coils.  How well your body weight is distributed across the individual coils...

I agree that all the information out there about latex mattresses can be overwhelming.

We were told that you don't want more than a couple inches between slats, so you might want to consider a solid foundation. Our local mattress manufacturer sold us a bunky board along with the mattress that works great and doesn't add much height.

Good luck!

You should definitely ask the manufacturer what is the best foundation for your specific mattress. Slats are actually better for some mattresses because the air flow is beneficial, but it depends on the size of the mattress, space of the slots, and possibly also the type of latex. I would have used my slat foundation, but because I want to use an adjustable base (s-scape), I'm not doing to use the slats when my new base arrives.. There is actually a wooden slatted adjustable base (European made) for those who want that. That would have some great advantages as a base but would not have the massage or wall hugger feature of the leggett and platt s-scape.

savvyrest.com recommends dunlop instead of talalay for people with back problems. they have good info on their site for choosing the type and firmness of latex, though i don't see them...

The worst experience with Verlo Mattress Factory

I have had it with Verlo Mattress Factory!

On 7/29/04, I walked into the Verlo Mattress Factory showroom and made a HUGE mistake. I asked for the top of line, the very best mattress and box spring set they had. The salesman, without asking me any questions about what I like in a mattress, or asking me a series of questions to make sure I was getting the right mattress for me, which I now know should be standard practice, simply pointed to the most expensive set in the showroom at the time. I paid my $2800.00 and waited for delivery. The mattress...
Offgassing and Mold??? - charnlar
Oct 8, 2013 9:20 AM
Reading through the threads in this forum, I have with no small amount of horror, read stories about people who have purchased beds with good faith, only to find that after some period of time, that MOLD has taken over their bedding, to the extent that it was negatively impacting (and rightfully so) the health of the person sleeping on the bed.  Assumptions below:

  • I don't believe I have read anything from anyone who had a traditional innerspring mattress that developed a mold problem.  Yes it might be possible that given "high humidity" or storage problems, etc, that anything can develop mold, but I don't believe under normal wear and tear, that traditional innerspring mattresses create a problem
  • There have been a number of reports, both in this forum and others, where Sleep Number type of mattresses can develop mold.  This...

Again, thanks for the further input.  One might form the opinion that the wool layer, since it flattens, is something to be avoided, but from what I understand, it performs a "wicking" function which allows the sleeper to remain cooler and dryer.

I went and looked at what I believe is the bed you have (Luxury Performance Organic).  I had been focusing on pure Latex,  but the one you have seems to be a good hybrid mix of various layers.  I was REALLY surprised to see the horsehair.  We had a friend who had a PURE horsehair mattress, and it was like sleeping on a concrete slab.  Since this is only a layer, my assumption is that the stiffness of the horsehair is modified by the various layers of latex.  What function does the horsehair provide that either a high ILD layer of latex or a layer of...

Great post, thanks for that!

While comfort undeniably is and always will be the number one contributing factor for the perfect mattress, I do feel that there is an often overlooked aspect: and that is how the mattress contributes to your health. Remember that you spend a third of your life (!!!) in bed - let that sink in!

While comfort alone may be perceived as healthy, there are other factors that should be considered even if the mattress is comfortable, such as what the cover of the mattress is made of and what material is used inside (PU/Memory Foam/Latex/etc.). Just as an example: there are many chemical components that MAY have an effect on your health through off-gassing (basically tiny particles of the material that are pushed into the air as the material inside the mattress decays).

I have made it my mission to have the most natural environment at home,...
