Hi all. I'm preparing for my first DIY mattress now that I'll be moving to the contiguous 48 states. Shipping to Alaska and the possible needs to return foam just was not possible so we ended up buying locally 5 years ago. I could use some feedback on what my plan is. I'm going to go with a full foam mattress, but am trying to save at least a bit on costs by going with a high quality PU foam core with a latex top rather than a full latex mattress. I'm looking at the following: 3" Lux-HQ 50ILD from foambymail 3" HD36-HQ 35ILD from foambymail 3" Rejuvinate talalay latex 24 or 28ILD from sleeplikeabear Organic Pillowtop Mattress Cover "The top is quilted certified organic wool and measures approximately 2" thick." All for an eastern king bed. Will run $1100.
I've considered not going with the Rejuvinate talalay from sleeplikeabear and instead getting 2x 2" of their latex toppers and dropping to either 2"lux or 2"hd (need to stay at 9" right now).
Thoughts? Anyone have experience using foambymail's Lux/HD for a base with a latex topper? |
Wife and I are both side sleepers. Wife is ~135lbs and I'm 165lbs. I was able to find the specs on my current mattress searching this forum :). We currently have a 32ILD 6" dunlop base with a 26ILD 2" talalay topper with a 1 inch wool cover. Specifically we have http://thenaturalsleepstore.com/products/natura-eco-haven.html. I think we could both use with a bit softer mattress as I believe the 2" topper doesn't provide enough cushion before hitting the 32ILD base. No back pain from it, but not quite as soft as I think we'd like. Looking at my own follow up post to my last mattress, I was kind of wishing it was a 3" 26ILD topper. I'm not stuck to 9" anymore. I thought I had a great deal on a 9" cover with 2" wool but I don't. I don't think I need the lux-HQ at all knowing now that my current core is only 32ILD and feels plenty firm.

Slappo86. You are answering your own question. Bravo. A 3" 26 ILD might very well do the trick. Perhaps adding another 2" 26 ILD on top of your current setup might work. Let us know how what you decide. Mattdud

I've pulled the trigger and gotten a pretty good price as well:
From top to bottom in an Eastern King mattress: $178 2x king latex pillows (not shredded latex) from sleeponlatex.com $80 1x 10" terry cloth 80/20 cotton/polyester from foambymail.com $349 3" 20ILD "soft" topper 100% natural dunlop from sleeponlatex.com $389 3" 30ILD "medium" topper 100% natural dunlop from sleeponlatex.com $124 3" 35-36ILD HD36-HQ PU foam from foambymail.com Total: $1120 for king size mattress and pillows
Will likely build a very low profile 3" boxspring after doing some more research to see if I need a boxspring under that PU foam or if it can lie right on the floor. Wife wants low profile bed. That may run $75-100 in materials. Also may buy a wool mattress topper for up to $200 like a st dormeier, but only if it sleeps hot and we want some more cushion. The 20ILD + a 2" wool cover may be too soft, so I didn't want to pull the trigger on that yet without trying things out first. Note: sleeponlatex has 30 day return policy with no return shipping or restocking fee, so if something turns out wrong/uncomfortable, my liability is limited.

Slappo86. You went all in. Congratulations. I hope this works out well for you. There should be no problem placing the whole system on the floor if that is what your wife would prefer. Mattdud.

I had a very bad experience with a thick quilted top with wool. It was very hot and because it was so thick, it totally eliminated the feel of the latex that I like so much. Because the quilted fabric also contained so much wool it made it worse....and so hot. |
Interesting.
