I have been looking around for a new mattressa couple of weeks. I don't have a lot of money and I have been sleeping on a old cheap mattress since my wife left. I need to do something about the mattress because my back hurts for about a half hour after I wake up. Sometimes it wakes me up at night when I roll over. This looks like some kind of "deal". It's dunlop and a soild core as best I can tell which I think suits me (6'2", 270/sidesleeper). It's less expensive than their other thinner dunlops. Why? Foam is domestic. Whats the deal? I'm ready to buy but I'd really like to know if anybody has any experience with this mattress or knows anything about it. I've read some very enlighting posts here and some of you folks seem very knowledgeable and helpful.
Thanks in advance,

It seems like a pretty good price, but I am not totally sure what the quality of the latex is. They say it is made by Latexco, and I assume it is a blend. If it is 100% synthetic I would avoid it, but not sure if Latexco makes 100% synthetic (no mention on the website). So, you might want to find out exactly what kind of latex they use (how much synthetic and how much is natural latex). Also, the don't give any firmness ratings, so hard to say if it will be the right firmness for you. You should ask about that as well. The cover is not as nice as some of the cotton with wool filling covers out there. That is part of why it is cheaper. Also, you do not have flexibility to pick/ exchange layers to get the right firmness. That is an important feature for people that are sensitive to the mattress support & pressure points. They say they have a 60 day comfort guarantee, so that is a plus. You probably should find out what costs you would incur if you return it (shipping, restocking, etc.). and why is this company latexco coming into play here? Very vague post. |
I'm sorry. Here is a link:

They say it's dunlop with a soft dunlop topper. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this matterss as it is from a good dealer and is offered as a bargain. |
I'll have to agree it does look like a good deal, however my only concern is it has only 1 1/2" of comfort layer and you being a side sleeper may find this is too thin of a soft layer for your hips and shoulders to sink into. It would probably provide the lumbar support you are needing for lower back pain. I recently bought a Latexco topper 7 zoned in supposedly 21 to 24 ILD, http://mattresses.net/3-inch-latex-mattress-topper.html, and found it too hard for me to use for side sleeping. The Dunlop latex is a more dense feeling material than the Talalay. I'm around 235 lbs. and 6'.-3" to give you and idea, that said, everyone seems to have different opinions on what is too firm and too soft. Another possibility is to look on the home page of the above link and compare their prices which appear to be very close to the one you are considering but substituting talalay for the upper comfort layers and possibly a little thicker layer for the shoulders and hip pressure relief. You could just take a gamble with the idea that you may need to add a softer topper layer later on. Good luck, |
Thanks Cowboy,
I called the number and talked with the sales guy. I got some stats and more info. The 7 in. base is a 3 zone dunlop with a 32-34 ILD on the ends and a 38 ILD in the center. The 1 1/2 in. topper is a 28 ILD Hevealux latex with a 28 ILD. Still seems like a good deal at $999 for a queen since it includes shipping, a 10 year warranty and a 60 day return (you pay shipping, both ways) policy. Any other opinions are welcome. Dave |
Any idea on the costs you would incur if you had to return it? |
Shipping by UPS ground from Boulder to Florida for 150 lbs. is around $150, so it would cost $300 to return it. Cowboy mentiond that it might be too firm but the fact that the mattress is 9 in. to start, that I can easily add an additional topper to soften it up. The fact that it's single core might help the deli sandwich factor. The real question now is "can I afford it?" but no one on this board can help me answer that. |
Update
I finally got enough money together it buy the foamsource mattress. It's a very good deal. The zoned Dunlop does the trick. Quite firm but supple. No stress concentrations at all, even on my hip when I'm on my side. I'm 6'2" and 260 lbs, so that's no easy trick. Very impressive for a 9 in. thick mattress. I am now able to sleep continously through the night without an agonising series of turn overs. The seller was very professional. I would like to thank this forum for helping me to make what turns out to be a very good and important decision. Money is tight for me but this has been worth every penny so far. |
