I am new the the site, but love the concept of soo many reviews of mattresses in one place. Since I am a new mattress owner after having the old one for about a dozen years, I was surprised to see how much mattress changed over the years! Well, after much homework at local and online retailers, we ended out buying from The Sleep Center and picked out the Anniversary model by Scandinaivan Sleep System was the one for us. This mattress is amazing, IMO, and I would suggest it to anyone that is looking for a new mattress. We bought the queen size set, with new foundation and box...along with pillows and sheets and a protector. We also had a great experience at that store.
Specs: The Anniversary by Scandinavian Sleep Systems
Anyone else give the Scandinavian a try? Love it as much as we do? We have had it about 7 months now - so I hope the positive experience will sleep with us for many more years.! :) |
We had a king size Scandanivian mattress we got from Mattress Warehouse. It was great for the first year to year and a half. Our was two sided and we routinely flipped the heavy monster about every three months. At about the eighteen month mark we were starting to see/feel some pretty large body depressions. When measured they were a full 2". Unfortunately MW refused to do anything under warrenty as we did not have the original bill of sale. This message was modified Nov 30, 2010 by jaybo

Thanks, Jaybo, for the friendly reply and info. I will be watching closely for ANY impressions forming and deal with them quickly if they do show up. I called the store where I bought it from and asked about my warranty if something like that showed up and was assured it would be covered if the impression was more than 2". I asked what would happen if it was 2" or more, and they said it would be replaced and that this warranty was in place for 10 full years. The only thing that would void this warranty was stains on the mattress itself (which I have the waterproof cover by L &P), not rotating it, or if I did not have the proper foundation, which I bought the complete system new - which they knew and reassured me that I was completely covered. I also keep a log of the "every 3 month rotation" I do with the mattress, as well. lol I hope mine never has the issues yours did, however I believe you had a different model than I.

Part of the problem with mattress warranties is that the manufacturers have so many outs that an actual warranty claim is rarely allowed. The 2" depression is slightly more than many others but regardless of how many inches they consider "normal" the depression has to be there without any weight on the mattress. Degraded polyfoam that has lost its qualities and ability to provide comfort or support will still usually have enough resiliency left to come back just enough that the depression is less than the warrantied amount. If this is the case, the claim will be denied. Even if the claim is allowed, it can be a very expensive process to make a claim as you have to return the mattress to the store at your own expense and then many (not all) will usually try to upsell you to something else (saying something like we don't make the mattress you bought anymore but we have something better) so they can retain their profit. Warranties on mattresses are more about marketing than they are about actual protection ... and the people who sell mattresses know this very well. A salesman who sells on warranty rather than specific information about the materials in a mattress, their qualities, and it's suitability for you and your specific needs, is usually more interested in making a sale than they are in your comfort or satisfaction a year or two down the line. Your greatest protection against mattress issues (outside of actual manufacturing defects which will usually show up early) is knowing what is in your mattress, not the warranty that comes with it. Phoenix PS: In all fairness to you I should mention that Foamex is no longer selling resilitex polyfoam (their polyfoam "latex copy" at the time) and has replaced it with another polyfoam formulation because of its propensity to degrade and cause the types of depressions mentioned here although you can still find it in several manufacturers mattresses (Stressopedic is another example). I don't know if they are still making it as a custom order or if some manufacturers just have a lot of "stock". I would certainly make sure you keep up with your rotation schedule although flipping a 2 sided mattress would be much more effective and preferable. This message was modified Dec 1, 2010 by Phoenix

Thanks for the info. Becasue of it, I once again called the store I bought it from, which is not a warehouse, furniture store. etc. - but a 'mattress only type retailer.' I asked further on the warranty process and this is what I learned... What I was told was that I did not need my original sales ticket, I did not need ANYTHING other than to show a 2" dip, -or- any imperfection (not abuse) that prevented me from sleeping correctly and they would replace it with the same or an equal value mattress AT NO CHARGE. Because I followed their suggestions and bought the foundation, waterproof protector, boxspring, mattress...I am COMPLETELY COVERED for 10 years. Also, because they are in the community I live, they assured me regardless of Scandinavian's standpoint, THEY (The store) would take care of me, if they would not. They said I could stop by and get all this in writing if it made me feel more comfortable, and that it was on the back of my invoice as well. Regardless, I do appreciate your time in posting the info and did learn a lot from this experience! -James |
I think you missed my point in this post as well as your other one which I'll reply to separately. They are completely safe with the 2" exclusion and they certainly know it. Do you really expect them to confirm that warranties in most cases are not worth the paper they are written on? A mattress that loses it's ability to support and provide comfort will still have less than 2" of depression when you are not laying on the bed and it has had some time to "recover". Even 1.5" which is closer to the norm is usually a "safe" amount for a manufacturer to offer because of the way it's measured and because they know that even degraded foam needs very little remaining resilience to come back enough to make a warranty replacement deniable. You are not "completely covered" as you believe you are. It is true that the outlet may choose out of goodwill to honor the warranty (and I would applaud this) but then they will be out the amount of the mattress. I would also not "expect" this ... especially with a mattress that was known to have the possibility of these issues ... and would set a precedent with every other unhappy consumer who believed they were covered but weren't. Why would you need this in writing when all they would "write" was the same 2" exclusion which is their "out". You say you wanted to research and learn ... then you can validate what I am saying with little effort as this information is easy to confirm. Your defense of and trust in a retailer who is only repeating what every other retailer repeats is really strange to me. I am not saying he is "bad" since i don't know him ... I am saying that what you are choosing to believe and what you are CAPITALIZING in your post flies in the face of the evidence that some very simple research would uncover. You don't have to believe me ... just take the cue and find out for yourself. In the mattress industry it is buyer beware ... and accurate information is your best friend. Phoenix |
Funride, I bought the Scandanavian right after they came out, so I'm sure it was a different model than you have. At the time we purchased the mattress the "warranty" was for 1 1/2" depression. If it's 2" now I would guess there were definate issues. The 2" depression was actually measured by the dealer when they came out to look at the mattress. MW was just looking for an excuse and used the bill os sale as that excuse, stating we don't know how old the mattress is. For whatever it's worth, it still had the original tag on it that showed the manufacture date and that it was built for MW. We've been through two beds from a local mattress company since and are looking for a new replacement again. The first was a pocket coil and it was rebuilt once because of foam compression. It gave out again, this time the coils were shot, and the company offered us a no charge replecement. The replacement has given up now, as well. The company doesn't want to deal with us any more and we were told to go elsewhere to purchase a bed. As Pheonix notes, warranties have so many exclusions they may not be honored. I've been reading this forum for quite some time and will likely go with a full latex for our next bedif I can convince my wife that the price is worth it. |
I LOVE MY SCANDINAVIAN SLEEP SYSTEM! I got the Sandmahn and I've had it almost four years. I sleep good EVERY night. I honestly and truly never have a bad night of sleep. The only down side is, I can't sleep on anything else. When i visit family or go to a hotel, it's horrible! I yearn for my Sandmahn when I'm not on it. I can't even begin to explain the quality of this thing. The only reason I'll wake up during the night is because I have to use the restroom. I dream all night, every night. It's such an unbelievable deep level of sleep, it's nearly ineffable. |
