Is the above statement true?

So I who weighs 210 pounds and  6 feet 2 inches tall will bottom out on a 10 inches or less all talalay mattress?

Why would I want talalay then?

I don't want to sink to the bottom of the mattress. Would you?

The amount and firmness of a latex mattress is a personal decision.  I bought a "medium" firm talalay mattress from a very reputable local dealer, but he obviously didn't know much about body weight and latex.   I weigh almost 250 lbs and DID bottom out on only 8 inches of medium talalay latex.  I exchanged that mattress for 8 inches of "firm" talalay latex.  Now, I didn't bottom out at all, but it was TOO FIRM for me.  When I added another 3 inches of "medium" on top of the firm base from an internet dealer (FoamSweetFoam) I ended up with 11 inches of pure comfort!   Soft, yet supportive for ME.

In hindsight, most of the online latex mattress dealers suggest at least 9-10 inches of layered talalay latex for "big" people with several firm layers on the bottom and usually medium on top.  I think a firm Dunlop latex base would feel similar to what I now have also.

Yeah, I would think 10" would be enough but it does depend on the person and the weight. You can always add some firm Dunlop under it if it bottoms out or even firmer Talalay. I would think 10" would be enough unless it was just too soft.

I can second what Jimsocal said.  I weigh over 250 lbs, and the first latex mattress I bought was from a local company that manufactures its own latex mattresses.  They clearly didn't know much about latex though, and they sold me a mattress that had me bottoming out.  I returned it.

Then I worked with Flobeds - they have extensive experience with latex.  They took the trouble to find out how much I weigh and what position I like to sleep in.  They recommended a much firmer configuration, and my mattress is 10" and I don't bottom out.  The latex does yield to my body weight, but it's strong and supportive.

Think about it - if you buy your latex too soft, a heavy person will bottom out.  A heavy person, and people with back issues, will need a firm latex to support them.

My latex is three layers of 3" Talalay latex in 36 ILD.  No bottoming out.  There is a 2" soft topper over the three core layers for some cusion.  The mattress is a dream to sleep on.

In fact my husband (who is not overweight) was just saying yesterday how much he loves out mattress, and that was after all the ridiculing I went through for all the research I did, and the zero support and help he gave me in choosing the mattress and putting it together.  He is now obsessive about it and just loves it.

I think that if you are considering a latex mattress, I would recommend that you only work with a company that specializes in them, such as Flobeds or Sleepez.  They both have a 100% return comfort guarantee, so if it's too soft or too firm, you can exchange layers to make it softer or firmer, and if you just don't like it at all, you can return it for a 100% refund.  I think the trial period for both companies is 90 days.
