bought pillow top mattress yesterday and it has a lump!!!
My fiance and I bought our first mattress yesterday. We went to a mattress store and ended up buying a lightly used Florence Beautyrest Black. We were really excited since we got it for 400dlls, so we put it in the truck we had rented and left it on its side for a few hours while we went to get other furniture. Later that night when we finally put the mattress on the bed frame it had a HUGE lump in the middle. We thought this was because the pillow top moved a little while the mattress was on its side on the truck, so we tried putting the mattress on the other side while trying to smooth out/beat the lump from it. It didnt help much, the lump just moved a little bit. How do we get rid of the bump? Were we robbed (the bump was not on the mattress when we looked at it and lay on it on the show room, but i cant help and wonder if they sold us something broken)? Any advice would be very much appreciated! |
Re: bought pillow top mattress yesterday and it has a lump!!!
First of all, if you read this forum a bit you'll see that most of us agree that one should never buy a pillowtop in the first place. But okay, now you've got one. Does the mattress store not offer a "30 day - or __ day - sleep trial"? What state are you in? I'm not SURE, but I believe it may be illegal for a retail store to sell a used bed. Find out if it is illegal in your state and then if necessary you can use this for leverage in taking the bed back. Even if you signed a contract stating you bought it "as is", that MAY not be legal. Again, I'm not sure, it's just a thought, something to check into. Is this an "individual coil" type mattress? If so, these are prone to the springs coming loose and migrating from where they're supposed to be. This has been a known problem with Simmons and supposedly they have fixed it. But it sounds like this COULD be what your problem is. If the spring has come loose and is causing this bump then it is defective and the only way to fix it would be to open up the mattress which you could do on your own if you have to, but in this case you shouldn't really have to. The deliverers or just the process of moving it screwed it up so it was delivered defective. TAKE PHOTOS that show the defective mattress. If it is not individual coils then it could be some other problem, but that's what it sounds like to me. Either way I'd go back to the store and tell him that you believe one of the springs came loose during delivery so you want to exchange it for a NON-DEFECTIVE mattress. Tell them that you now have "lost confidence" in Simmons as a brand and so want to get a mattress with regular springs instead. Buy something ultra firm without a pillowtop and then add your own toppers for softness. Read some of the posts here about choosing a bed - use the search function etc. - before getting your next one. Simmons mattresses feel great but even if it wasn't defective it would probably break down fast, become too soft and start hurting your back. IF you get to return it and get a different mattress count yourself lucky to have dodged a bullet. In all fairness, some say Simmons are great - there was a guy here on this forum who said he loved his. But look around the net for Simmons reviews and I think you'll see a different opinion. If it were me, I'd do ANYthing to get rid of this mattress and get a non-Simmons one with non-pocket coils. Pocket coils (individual coils) are notoriously unreliable. One time I had problems returning a mattress I didn't like and so I told the guy I'd pay for the shipping in both directions and give him a $50 restocking fee to take it back. I lost $100 but that was better than being stuck with a mattress I didn't like. Good luck. Hope this helps. This message was modified Sep 28, 2009 by jimsocal
