Custom built firm mattress for heavier side sleeper

New to the forums, have been reading and reading a lot of posts.  Time for a new mattress as my old one is sagging a lot and very old.

I'm 6' 8" 220lbs. Side sleeper and like a firm feeling mattress.  I'd like to custom build a queen-sized matress as suggested in other posts I have seen on here.  This way seems cheaper?

I'm confused about firmness, ILD, thinkness, materials, etc.  Seems like I should pick about 3 layers of 2-3" thick materials as a starting point, but what kind of density is good for a heavier person like myself that likes a firm bed? Also, any good suggests on where to purchase the items?  My budget for this mattress is around $800.

Are there any good 'how-to' or guide posts on this website? I looked/searched the forums some, but couldn't find a good beginners guide!

Thanks for the help in advance!
