After doing research for a few weeks I'm inclined into buying a talalay setup. I was planing on going with something similar to this setup http://www.whatsthebest-mattress.com/forum/my-foambymail-diy-mattress-report-pictures/24739-0-1.html

6" 36 ILD core

2" 32 ILD mid-core

2" 20 ILD topper

I might just order the 36 and 32 to see how stiff is the mattress and latter get a topper depending on how i'm liking the mattress.

After reading the recent luck/improvements with the fbm orders i was inclined on going with them due to the cost difference with other brands. I called FBM today and they dont have what im looking for in stock for California king.

So i'm open to suggestions. I live in Houston and the only place i found that had latex the prices were pretty high. This is the mattress we liked the most from them http://www.omimattress.com/Lago.php

I'm looking for something similar to the Omi mattress but that doesnt break the bank.

Thanks for the help.

I don't know what your budget is, but sleepez.com sells individual latex pieces.  The 6" core may be more difficult to find.  sleeplikeabear.com sells foam pieces.  You might try some inventive google searchs for "foam products houston", "latex foam products houston" that might turn up local manufacturers of foam.  You might find a place locally where you can go inspect the foam you intend to purchase.

yositoco,

I'm right there with ya. Any day now I'm going to pull the trigger and purchase the bed. We have a queen now so I thought about cutting off the pillow top and laying a king 2" 20 ILD on top of it. (we want to upgrade to a king). If we like it, we'll get the 32 ILD mid, and if we still like what we're seeing we'll drop more money for the 36 ILD 6" core.  I think to make it "softer" we could add another 1" 20ILD on the top.  I think it's all trial and error...

I just ordered the 2" 20 ILD topper 100% talalay latex today.  I plan to make a very detailed post with pictures once it arrives.

Looking forward to hearing how you like this and what it looks like etc. It's on my "wish list".

I'm looking into DIY latex beds and am interested in doing this build for myself.

The one thing I'd like to do differently is to add vertical zones. I'm a side sleeper so a softer shoulder area would be great.

Does anyone have tips on how to go about zoning a bed like this? The only thought I had was to replace the ILD 32 mid core with ILD 20 near the top. I'd like to also reduce the firmness of the top layer but I'm not sure how to do that.

If I do zone the top layer I'm thinking I should get a 1" layer to cover the seam. Would a Sensus MF 1" be good for that?

Some extra info about me: 5' 11", 130 lbs, male, side sleeper.

An easy way to do the vertical zoning might be to go with this topper:  http://www.mattresses.net/3-inch-latex-mattress-topper.html

I know I've read posts on this forum before from folks who created their own zones. They used an electric knife to cut the different zones, then pieced it together. They put a zippered mattress cover around it all to hold it together. Seems to me I saw some comments that it worked okay, but wasn't as neat and tidy as buying them precut for assembly, or something like that. Maybe if you search on "electric knife" you can find some discussion in the archives.
