I plan to order a topper from FBM today or tomorrow and need a couple of questions answered. I bought a cheap foam mattress from ebay 3 months ago I loved the contouring melting action but it has lost its contouring and now just sinks. This was expected. I know latex is not heat responsive, but does latex contour the way memory foam does? 6'3" 260-265lb mixed side and back sleeper. Does anyone know whether the ild20 talay at FBM is similar in support as the 4.5lb memory foam? I tried a 4lb memory foam topper in a store and loved but only one store in my city has a talalay topper but the sales person didn't know much about the specs of the topper. Hmm. I wonder what is it I'm asking or not asking that warants no response. I figured since this forum is centered around latex I'd surely get at least one reply. I was leaning toward latex for a couple of reasons. I read latex is not heat responsive and has no memory, so it will return to its original shape all most instantly, which is good after sleeping on the cheap memory foam I have now. One of the problems that I don't like about the memory foam that I'm sleeping on is after it heats up it sinks more, so if I'm on my back and change positions to my side the sink hole thats left is not so comfy. This will not be the case with latex, right? Another thing, I read with all things equal, latex will last longer than memory foam. Is this accurate. Being that I'm about 265lb back and side sleeper, would it be best that I get 3" of ild20 or 2" of ild20 and 2" of ild32. I really don't know the feel or characteristics of the different ild's and I only have one store with one talalay option in my city, so I have no choice but to rely on info from others. need2sleep636, Since no one else has responded, I will give you my experience but I have to remind you that I am not quite 5 feet and around 100 lbs so our body types are very different. I have 1" very soft Talalay Latex Topper over three layers of Talalay Latex (all natural but the bottom layers are a blend) ranging from 35 ILD to 47 ILD) and after almost 4 years (but with so many latex exchanges to keep going firmer, more like 3.7 years), my latex cores all look the same and have not sunk in. My latex cover on one side got damaged from red dye on PJ's I worn going through to my fitted sheet and onto the natural organic cotton and wool cover but the latex undeneath is still as good as new. My Talalay latex pillows about the same age also bounce right back and have no sunken in areas.

What is the ild of your soft topper? Is there a difference in feeling of naturall talalay and blended one? |
Thank you very much Lynn for your reply. Did you get your latex from FBM? Have you ever tried an ild less than 35? If so, would you say you sank into it very far? I was wondering if I should get a 3" comfort layer top or 2 2" layers; 20 & 32 maybe. I understand that latex does not deaden motion like memory foam, but what really need to know, does latex contours to the body very well as memory foam does? |
Latex contours to the body a bit, but not as much as memory foam. Probably the main benefit of memory foam is that is kind of molds to your body, especially when it warms up. The downside is that it provides little support. So, your heaviest parts can sink in a fair amount as it warms up. The lower the ILD of latex, the more it will conform to your body and the less support it will give. Latex also springs back quickly, while memory foam springs back slowly. So, your 20ILD latex will feel firmer and more supportive than your 4.5lb memory foam. You are probalby best going with mainly latex and possibly adding a little memory foam for comfort if desired. I use 1" of memory foam (5.9lb.), 1" of 19 ILD latex and 1" of 24ILD latex as my top 3 comfort layers. I weigh about 210 and sleep on side, so I like it somewhat on the plush side. Most people only figure it out by trial and error, and it is good to keep the top layers to 1-2" so it can be fine tuned better. |
Sorry if I'm coming across as a pain to deal with, but I don't have any stores to test latex and different options of memory foam and I'm sure packing this stuff up to ship back is a big hassle. This message was modified May 9, 2011 by need2sleep636

HelpMe, You asked me three questions and here are my answers:
Are you a side sleeper? YES (the correct pillow height for my neck and shoulder also was necessary fro me) What is the ild of your soft topper? Brylane Homes said it was 24 ILD but I feel it is softer which is what I wanted. If I was taller and therefore heavier, 2" of a soft latex topper would have been better for me but I needed only 1" to sink in enough to feel the firmness underneath but still get some cushion for my pressure points. Is there a difference in feeling of naturall Talalay latex and blended one? I could never handle manmade latex (tried a pillow and had to give it away due to my allergies and it was much too firm) so I was surprised that the Talalay processing created no difference to me in the natural or blended latex. I had bought my latex kit from FloBeds but none of their toppers they sent me were to my back's liking so I bought my own from Brylane Homes which had a queen size on sale with no seam. (this also answers another poster's question). This message was modified May 10, 2011 by Lynn2006

need2sleep, please keep us updated. I just went to the FBM sight and it looks like you got 3" of Firm Foam with 2" of soft Talay Latex and a plush mattress pad. I can't wait to hear updates and hope this works for you. What type of platform are you going to be placing the foam and latex over? |
I sleep almost 100% on side. I would guess my setup would be a bit too soft for back sleeping or someone that ways a bit more than me (both seem to be true in your case). Of course it will depend on whether you have back issues and how soft you like it. I don't have back issues that often, and tend to like it a bit on the softer side for comfort. I would say it is fairly comfortable and supporting for me, without the feeling of sinking in too much over night (like when I have used more than 1" of memory foam). It does feel a little softer after it warms up (in a good way). The additional benefit is I can always make it firmer by taking off 1". So, a good setup might be something a bit firmer than you might like, with 1" increments on top that you can adjust to the right comfort. Some people are able to get it just right with thicker pieces, but that has not been the case for me. How you layer it will affect the feel as well. For me, putting the memory foam on top and the 19ILD below it gives a bit softer feel. Bottom line is that almost everyone here ends up with something different, so only your experience and trial and error will get you were you want (if you are fairly picky). |
