down pillow suggestions.

Hi Guys,

In my tireless and endless effort to find the right pillow, I think I will give down pillows a try.  I have gone through many latex, foam, and down alternative pillows and they all give me neck aches.  I prefer low profile pillows so that may be a problem too.

I think I will try a down pillow from this website http://www.unitedpillow.com/catalog/Bed_Pillows-1-1.html, but I dont know which to choose.  Since I prefer a lower profile pillow, would a 600 or 700 down fill pillow be too thick?  If so, what down fill pillow would be a correct choice for a lower profile pillow?

I have actually bought from them.  I have a 600 fill power and a 800 fill power.   The main variable on the thickness will be whether you get on that is soft, medium, or firm.  If you want low profile, you probably want the soft.  I started with a firm 800 fill power, and it was too plump for me.  I exchanged it for a soft.  That ended being slightly too thin, so now I have it in a pillow cover shortened about 3" with safety pins.  That effectily raises the profile, and it is working pretty well for me.

I think the soft 700FP might be a good choice for you.   If you are not happy, they can add or take out feathers, or you can return.  They can be a bit slow with the shipping though.

I also have a medium 600FP , which is okay as well.  The higher fill power costs more, but it doesn't  seem to flatten out as quickly.  At least that is my perception.  That is one of the problems with down, by the end of the night it has usually lost some of it plumpness.  Still, down is my favorite type.

There is also a website myidealpillow.com, where you can order a pillow fitted for your size, sleeping habits, mattress etc.   I have not bought from them, but it sounds like an interesting idea.  A bit expensive, but they do have a return policy if you are not happy.  I think their soft to medium ones use down, but they don't say what fill power.

their prices seem very good if their fill power's are even remotely realistic.  one thing i will say is that even if the price difference was seemingly enormous...always pay for a higher fill power.  basically a higher fill power literally means the plumules themselves are larger....they don't shift around quite as easily and they maintain their loft through the years much better.  Also down has a very quick break in period...maybe a couple of months, after which a very high fill power down will more or less feel the same for sometimes decades after this time.

also keep in mind that 'firm' is relative....a firm down pillow will not be as firm as say even a soft latex pillow for most people.

Thanks Guys!

I have actually ordered from myidealpillow.com, but their pillow did not work out well for me.  According to my profile, they suggested I go with the back sleeper pillow which is filled with down alternative.  They are a good company and exchanged my initial pillow for a revised one after I complained for neck aches, but utlimately, it wasnt for me.

I will try for one of the higher filled down pillows and report back.
