Foam By Mail -- Possible Bed ?
If I wanted to do something like the SleepEZ 10,000 with soft, med, x-firm layers would this work closely? $230 3" soft 20ILD Latex $240 3" Medium 32ild Latex $122 LUX HQ 3" 50ILD FOAM PU I realize it isn't all Latex, but it is a lot less expensive :) Is the latex decent from FBM? The other thread gave a variety of opinions, and Haysdb *the foam god* returned his FBM Latex? :) |
Re: Foam By Mail -- Possible Bed ?
That LUX is very firm - 50ILD vs. 44 (SleepEZ). I get the impression that firm PU foam gives more support than firm latex, so I would wonder if the 36ILD HQ would be better for a bottom core. Also, 3" 20ILD seems kind of thick for that soft of a top. I still think it's safer to start with multiple 2" thick layers - that way you can rearrange them and not risk having to send a layer back (or scrap it.) The reason SleapEZ starts with 3" (actually 2.8") is because that is exactly half of a Latex International core thickness. They take LI's 5.6" cores and cut them in half. For your base, you could buy 2" of 36 HQ PU and 2" of LUX HQ, and maybe that would be close to the 44?? Another reason to go with multiple 2" layers instead of 3" is because laytex is very heavy, and 2" is lighter than 3" - makes it easier to move around. I am very pleased with my FBM latex. Haysdb merely returned one of his FBM layers (because he determined he wanted his mattress softer, yet) and kept his other two. Maybe he'll chime in here (like I had to say "maybe" ). Re: Foam By Mail -- Possible Bed ?
That is almost exactly my bed except I have 5" of Lux. To me it feels quite firm and supportave, without pressure points. I prefer (I think) a more plush feel so I've ordered another 2" of 32ild to give it a try. If I could start over, I think I'd get 3" Lux, 2" HD36, 3" 32ild latex, 3" 20ild latex. (or maybe 4" 32 and 2" 20ILD knowing I could easily add another inch if desired) This message was modified Dec 12, 2007 by ericgl

Re: Foam By Mail -- Possible Bed ?
Good advice in the previous posts IMO. 2" layers are easy to work with. 1" layers are rather "fragile" - I have two of those and they are looking pretty beaten up already, plus they are just fussy to work with. 3" of ILD 20 is a bit too much, at least for most folks. It works for me but only because mine is under an Intelli-Gel overlay. 3" or even 4" cores are OK if half-width. A King-size layer of anything over 2" is quite a handful. Most convenient IMO: Support layers - 3" split king Comfort layers - 2" full size |
Re: Foam By Mail -- Possible Bed ?
If you had 2" LUX and 2" 36 for a base, you could swap the order of the two to adjust the feel. I'm sure you'd be able to tell a difference in the firmness. As for comfort layers, I don't see a reason to buy 3" of any latex, since you could always order another inch or 2 later (with free shipping) if you determine you need softer. You can always add softness, but with thick layers, you can't take away softness, if it ends up too soft. With thinner layers, you could always move a "too soft" layer down a layer, and not have to scrap it. |
Re: Foam By Mail -- Possible Bed ?
Thanks for great responses! :) So the latex from FBM , does it feel similar to the latex of FBM? If I do (2) 2" latex layers that means I only have 4" of latex, the 10,000 has about 9" of latex. Won't the feel be a LOT different than a full latex bed? |
Re: Foam By Mail -- Possible Bed ?
I have Talalay latex from three different sources, quite possibly representing all three manufacturers of Talalay in the world. I have no issue with the quality of any of them, and I'm picky about quality. FBM latex is fine. So is the latex from Sleep Warehouse. I like donw's suggestion of 2" of ILD 50 and 2" of ILD 36. It's a clever way of hedging your bet when you don't know for sure which you would prefer. I don't think the feel will be a lot different from 100% latex, but I'm not speaking from experience. |
Re: Foam By Mail -- Possible Bed ?
So is this the configuration that might get me close to the sleepez? 3" 20ILD 3" 32ILD 2" HQ 36ILD 2" LUX 50ILD Will the 36 and 50 support really average out? BTW, what is the FBM re-stocking fee? :) |
Re: Foam By Mail -- Possible Bed ?
I think that would be close. But SleepEZ's soft is 25ILD - not 20. And 2.8" thick - not 3". I would just be afraid 3" of 20 may be too soft. If it is, how would you firm it up? If you get 2" of 20ILD, you could always order another inch for $85 shipped. FBM restocking fee is 15% of the purchase price. This message was modified Dec 13, 2007 by donw

Re: Foam By Mail -- Possible Bed ?
If I build it, I think I need 3" 32 ILD Latex 3" 32 ILD Latex Some other pu foam. But lately, I am leaning towards just spending the cash and getting it from Sleepez. Seems like they have great quality, and I have yet to read anything but great things about the beds... |
Re: Foam By Mail -- Possible Bed ?
I would never discourage anyone from buying a mattress from SleepEZ or FloBeds. They both seem expensive at first blush, but for what you get, they both represent excellent values IMO. You can save some money by building something, but ONLY by cutting back on the quality somewhere - either substituting Urethane foam for latex, and/or settling for a very basic terry cloth cover instead of a nice cotton and wool cover. To build an equivalent mattress, you will spend as much or more. Where the real value lies with these companies is in their expertise and customer service. |
Re: Foam By Mail -- Possible Bed ?
Yes, that's what I am thinking. i am just working myself to just spending the $1600 :) Shawn really seemed to know his stuff. He told me 10000 would be fine for me provided I get Medium - Firm - Xfirm What is strange, jeremy said Medium Medium X-firm. Not sure, seems like Shawn knows his stuff more though? I would follow Shawn's recommendation. |
