Got a new foam memory mattress - the best what was in the shop. Not sure if I got it all wrong

The old mattress was comfy enough - just had it 5 years run, not protecors saved its prestine cleaniness, so I decided it was time to change. Since the last word in mattrass world is memory foam (as enlightened by the sales assistant to addition to some previously heard some  opinions of "do-not-remember-who-and when") we made two trips and chose the firmest (rate 7) with "stay cool" cover thing which set us back a cool £700. BUt having slept on it for 4 nights now we both (seperately) are not so sure if it was "the best". It seemed firmer in the shop - my DH(dear husband) even asked me to check if it is written somewhere on it that it is firmness 7, not say 4< by some glitch. I checked - even though it is not specified on it, the brand Synergy - gives this rating of firmness. Anyway, since we both feel it is too soft - does it mean that memory foam is not the best for us? Or could it be just a cheap(!) version of a good idea - Memory Foam Matress?
Now, that I've read some opinions here, am I right to suggest that it is better option to have a (good)spring mattress with a memory foam topper, rather then foam only,
I would really appreciate your advice as it was MY idea of the memory foam, and I wanted to make sure that my DH's poor back will get maximum support. He goes to Chriopractice sometimes every week - so I would feel as a criminal for making it worse instead of better. The matress has a 30 days trial return policy - but I am afraid to find myself in an unknown terretory, which feels like a minefield!
