I am having severe pain radiating from below my lower back to upper back that is a new pain...thought i was allergic to latex but the symptoms are different than what the allergy would be
the pain pretty much goes away under heat pad when i get up so it is clearly related to being in the bed
i have spent so much money and time on beds that i am going crazy - this is on my costco/sleep scienced latex bed, have tried both sides, problem seems not to be related to firmness This message was modified May 1, 2010 by randys

Randys, I share your pain (both physical and psychological). I sooo want a latex bed but they just don't seem to suit me. We tried a flobed a few years back and after monkeying around with every (I mean every combo possible) I woke up with ever worsening lower back pain. Bed was sent back. But I continued to want a latex bed so just a couple of weeks ago, I gave it another try when I found out that their vZone was much more customizable than it was before. I have this twin bed in the guest room that is comfortable (it consists of a base medium-firmness coil mattress with a separate pocket coil comfort layer in a separate cushy casing) that I use as my experimental bed for trying out things before committing to a king. I ordered just a vZone matched exactly to my proportions and substituted the pocket-coil comfort layer with this. I laid down - bliss - comfortable yet very supportive to my mid-body for side-sleeping. I woke up 5 hours later - lower back pain. Tried a second night - even worse lower back pain. Third night, no better. Exact replication of my former experience with latex. There are some people, and Flobeds readily admits this, that latex does not work for. Perhaps you and I are in that minority. So, I am back on my Serta king bed after having a massage therapist get the kink out of my lower back and the pocket coils are going back into the twin top. The vZone, unfortunately, is non-returnable. I am committed to flying (non-refundable airfare) to anothrer city to check out the Essentia mattress, but after this vZone experiment I think it is kind of pointless. Even if it feels great in the store, I will not know how it would feel 5 hours later which is when the lower back pain sets in. Sorry I have no answer for you, but perhaps it helps to know you are not alone in your confusion! In fact, the amount of $ I have spent on travel, products, and shipping, experimenting over the last few years could easily have paid for a couple of S brands!! And maybe (I don't know your age) at 50-something I just have to accept that the mild back discomfort I have on rising from my Serta in the morning is the best it gets for me (certainly way better than my painful latex experiences). randys/Diane: As you're both probably aware, I have a FloBeds 100% natural that I'm very happy with. But prior to this I slept for 20 years on waterbeds. The only reason I did not stay with the waterbed was that I wanted to try something else that was different. My point is this. Why don't you try a waterbed. Get a good quality," low or no wave" waterbed mattress. I like the soft sided waterbeds because they make up just like a regular bed. This is opposed to what is referred to as a hard or solid sided waterbed. You can adjust the water level to any that suits you. I would suggest that you also get a electric water pump when you purchase the bed, that way you can adjust the water level much more easily. The fact that you can purchase a heater with them allows you to adjust the temperature to any that suits you. There is not another bed made, that I am aware of, that gives you the infinite adjustability of a waterbed. If I were going to buy a different bed from what I currently have it would be a waterbed. Dave Turner started in the business with waterbeds, thus the name, FloBeds. You might give him a call and talk to him about this idea since you already have a working relationship with him. He's a very inventive guy and will turn handsprings in an effort to have a satisfied customer. You have my best wishes. This message was modified May 1, 2010 by eagle2

randys- my sympathies. I have spinal stenosis and have been trying different options as I am compelled to side sleep forever. Try putting some boards ( with small spaces in between for air) under the latex mattress and add a comfort layer on top - 2" of memory foam or a cuddlebed or other fiber mattress topper - but check reviews, as some of them bunch up. You could also try a feather bed on top, although they are high maintenance, and, as several here have recommended, the omalon topper which is high support underneath it. the combination you probably need to stop the pain is higher support underneath and a softer surface. a coil spring base would probably be a better starting place for you,but since you are already invested in a latex mattress, try playing with combinations to see if you can get it to work for your condition. good luck EDIT I am just remembering that the one time I had shooting pains up my back like those you describe was when I had my top layer TOO soft. I cut the memory foam layer on top down to 1" and that solved it. This message was modified May 2, 2010 by olenska

randy, have you seen a doctor about the pain to rule out any illness or damage you may have? |
