Ideas for middle layer? Sadly, my DIY is too firm

Hi everyone,

I have 4" of 5.3 lb memory foam over 4" of Lux-HQ from FBM - which sits on a platform.  After several months of evaluation, I have decided it's just too firm.  I would love to hear any ideas for making it a bit cushier.  (I sleep OK on it and don't have pain - but it just feels too hard.)

I'm a 145 lb side-sleeper.  I think I just need a middle layer to "transition" the hips and shoulders into the Lux foam.  In other words, I'm bottoming out on the memory foam - but barely putting a dent in the Lux.

Assuming a middle layer will help, I also want to avoid making the bed TOO much higher.

  • Am I wasting my money trying ONE inch of anything?  It seems latex might provide the most "supportive softness" for the lowest profile - but that is just a guess on my part.
  • I was thinking 1" of 20 ILD latex from FBM might be worth trying.  However, I'm reading warnings about using latex between poly-foams due to its need to breathe - is that right?
  • Any other materials or densities I should consider?
  • If 1" was not quite enough, I could add another inch, but would prefer not go much higher than that.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would be very grateful!
