Hi,

Just wanted to thank you all for your contributions! I have read this forum a lot, but haven't posted. I bought the foambymail 6" medium talalay latex mattress in a queen size with the terry cloth cover. It should be here is a about a week. I decided on foambymail because of the price. I deliberated a lot over my options, but we only had an $800 budget, so I decided to start with this mattress, and then, if I want, I can dress it up a bit.

DH is 5'8" 190lbs., and I am 5'4" 120lbs (both usually side sleepers, occasionally back sleepers). I hurt my back a few years ago and needed a firm surface then. It's better now and only hurts if I sleep on my stomach in an odd position or on one of those 2' thick air mattresses that slowly leaks until it sags by morning.  I was concerned about the firmness for DH, but he said that he doesn't care as long as I am comfortable. We did at least decide on latex over memory foam because he is always hot at night, and we didn't want anything that would cause him to feel hotter because he wakes up if he gets too warm. We are currently sleeping on an old futon, which was quite comfortable for 2 years (so much more comfortable than our ancient hand-me-down spring mattress bed that we used it instead). However, we moved last summer, and the batting got all bunched, so we are sleeping on all sorts of ridges and valleys. DH wakes up about every half hour and has started to get back pain, which has never been a problem before, so I decided it was time to spring the money for a real bed. He figures that as long as he's sleeping on an even surface devoid of knots of batting, he'll be fine.

I was planning on using 1/2" plywood to create a solid surface under the mattress. We are getting a new bed frame as well, so I am not completely sure what it will have for support. I believe it is 2 side wood rails and a few slats. I have read that some people use masonite board, but I didn't know if that would be sturdy enough for a queen. I don't want a slat base or flexible slat base because we will be just sleeping on 6" of latex, and I don't think it would be comfortable.

Until you get your new bedframe can't make any suggestions.  Get some slats to put over the frame if it doesn't have any or many, placed pretty close together.  Where did you get the bedframe?

Walmart Site-To-Store might be an option . . platform beds.

Hi fairy,

My vote is for the plywood... the platform bed that my wife and I are getting will be using that as the base.

Thanks for the suggestions. Leo3, I got my bedframe from Value City Furniture, and chain in Pittsburgh. It's a cheap $200 "sleigh" bed with a cherry finish.

I tried to post the pic, but don't know how. Here's the URL: http://www.vcf.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?partNumber=1157507&Nao=2&langId=-1&numberOfResultsPerPage=12&referrer=shelfPage&storeId=10001&catalogId=10153&N=4294966666%200+4294967163&categoryId=4294967293

I will be getting the bedframe later this week, but the mattress probably won't be here until the beginning of next week, so I'll let you know what I have for a base.

take a look at the nomad slat bed from Amazon. We just bought it. It is only $149, and lets the latex breathe, which is very important.

You can read all the reviews on there also. I heard you got to paint plywood so it doesn't stink, plus the latex need air circulation, or it could get mold, at least that is what I read.

I almost ordered a topper from foambymail, then read some horror stories about that company. It was about their sound proofing foam. I'm not sure if their latex is any good, but I like their prices. They even said they would beat Overstocks price, and give me an additional 10% off. Maybe I will revisit their site.

Please tell us how you like their latex. And if it has an odor, that is important to me because I am buying the topper for my young daughters.

one other thing. Foambymail sent me out a sample of their latex like I requested, and they sent me a dirty hairy piece of foam! I couldn't believe it. The hair even looked like a pubic hair. I sent them an email back and told them this was not good business.

All you do to post a pic is click the LINK button at the menu above - the one that looks like a chain link - 3 over to the left of the smiley face - then when the box comes up paste your link into it (it automatically puts the http in the right place, just paste the whole link). So here is the working link:
