After extensive Internet research (including this forum), we ordered this from SleepEz: Select Sleep Cal-King 13,000 100% Natural Talalay Latex Mattress my side:Soft/Medium/Firm/Firm husbands side:Medium/Firm/XFirm/Xfirm Some days we woke up fine, other days my lower back was throbbing in pain and husband felt "achy all over" (he said he never felt like this on any other mattress and he travels alot). I tried his side and it seemed way too firm for me. We also tried different layer combos from the above. I was confused on keeping it or not because some days we felt fine, but the 90days was running out and I got nervous, so we returned it. I keep thinking maybe we should have kept it and tried other layer combos, but I honestly don't have a lot of time/patience for that and I get confused thinking about all the different possible combos. I'm so dissapointed, I love the idea of Latex because its natural, durable and less prone to dust mites (husband is allergic), but now what? I'm thinking a firm/med firm basic high quality spring mattress and adding latex toppers if needed to soften it. but which innerspring and where to purchase? The more reviews I read, the more confused I get. I know all the "s" brands are poor quality and I hate the idea of buying from Sit N Sleep or some other sleezy mattress store. all the recommendations say "buy from somewhere w/a good return policy", but I havent found this w/regard to mattresses except Costco and some online latex mattress sellers. so my questions are:
I feel stuck and don't know what to do! For various reasons, we don't have an old mattress we can use and are sleeping on an Aero bed. I have no "plan of action" and no idea what to try next which is really stressing me out. Thanks for any advice. Deborah |
I have a Flobed (bought in May 2007) and yes I was frustrated at first getting it right since I started out too soft which causes lower back pain but I wanted some cushion for my pressure points since I sleep on my side. I now have my bed very firm but with a 1" soft topper over it. The topper is necessary to have the very soft cushion. Since I am not quite 5 feet tall I finally found what worked for me was to replace the 2" convoluted topper with a 1" very soft natural latex topper. I tried to sleep without a topper but then the bed was always too firm or too soft and I always woke up in pain. I would give FloBeds a chance and I feel their topper may be what you need. Also the pillow makes a difference. I sleep on a natural latex pillow. I actually bought 6 from Overstock to get to the right lower height for me and I am using the other pillows as shams and for guests. I can sleep on any of the pillows but the two I have on my bed are just perfect for me. Dave tried to help me by slicing a Queen natual latex pillow but then it was too low and that is when I realized I needed some height for my neck support. His Queen Talalay Latex Pillow was wonderful but too low and I am sure the one not sliced would be too thick for very petite me since I tried out pillows in stores.
I was allergic to a conventional bed with all the chemicals that have added. I really love my bed (most of the layers are 100% all natural except for my bottom two Super Firm blended layers that amazingly caused me no allergies) from FloBeds but it was frustrating at first since it was just me trying to make decisions and I was wishing I had a partner to help me choose. I see now to not analyze the set-up. I had a friend keep looking how my back was curved to make sure it molded to the latex. But then that configuration was too soft. Then I finally stopped analyzing it right away and just sleep on it for 2 nights and then made my decision if I needed to move the layers around. What I learned is that you really need to try out a bed by sleeping on it for days before you can be sure the set-up is right. My last bed was way too firm with no topper and I was stuck with it for about 10 years. If I had a try out period, I would have seen that I went too firm. I could never go back to a conventional mattress. Remember too soft hurts the lower back and that is why you need very firm or firm with a cushion on top to cushion the pressure points. P.S. I had to edit the post since I sprained my thumb and keep skipping keys. I am seeing a doctor tomorrow. This message was modified Mar 28, 2011 by Lynn2006

Hi Lynn, Thanks for the thoughtful reply. Questions: 1. Is there benefit to trying Flobeds over SleepEZ (where we originally bought) if we decide to try latex again? Flobeds is a bit more $$ and they don't seem to have as liberal an exchange policy as they may have in the past. I was thinking of re-ordering from SleepEz again, though not sure I should... 2. you recommenad a "very firm" or "firm with a cushion on top" to cushion pressure points - can you list what the layers should be from Flobeds to make each of those types of bed? one note: does your recommendation change given that I sleep on stomach/back/side (but favor the side when my lower back starts hurting)? i read here it can be tricky to get comfort right w/latex when you sleep on side/stomach... 3. What layers do you recommend for husband - 6'4" 230lb prefers stomach, but sleeps on side/back also. he complained his SleepEz Medium/Firm/XFirm/Xfirm gave him "body aches all over". am i crazy/foolish to even try an all latex mattress again? I'm a little gun shy to try it again, i'm not sure i have the patience of some on this forum of trying all the layer combos. and my hubby lets me do all the research and worrying, so i dont have any help either... :( on the other hand, i dont have a decent mattress so maybe I dont have much choice. the people on here who have been successful give me some hope, but others haven't been able to make it work thanks for the reply and any help/insight you can provide!!! |
Deb, since the SleepEZ set-up did not work out, you need to try a company with a latex soft topper that fits inside the cover to have a try at another approach. I also got aches all over without a topper. I feel you husband needs mostly all very firm layers with a soft topper over this to have the support he needs with cushion for the pressure points.
You can save money with the blended latex that amazingly did not affect my allergies due to the Talalay process. Then check daily for sales to get the price diferrence within the 90 days.
I am off to the doctor. Good luck in whatever you do. |
You may also want to try Custom Sleep Design in Connecticut. They can customize the upper and lower halves of the mattress as well - softer for shoulders, firmer for hips. Visit their website - you can put your measurements in and they can come up with a tentative design. I have been in contact with them via email and they are very willing to give me information - even though I have not purchased from them as of yet. It's just another option for you. I, too, do not want to go through the hassle of exchanging layers and such - I would like to try and get it right the first time! There is also a commercial line of latex mattresses - Pure Latex Bliss - that I found in my local sleep shop and thought they were comfortable. They have toppers as well - check out their website too!! |
I just put together a latex bed and love it. In fact, we liked it so well we are building a second one for a vacation house, but I bought it in pieces and wound up with a 12" bed instead of 9" because I had to order another 3" piece to get the firmness right. I also got the top layer wrong--to soft--and was able to return it. I am sorry you are having trouble, but some people just don't like latex. You might be better with an innerspring core. Our second choice for the Simmons Comforpedic. I found it incredibly comfortable. They retail for close to $10K, but I found them on Ebay and from other sources for about $3200, including shipping for a queen. I am not sure how they will hold up, but the cover is removable and I was able to separate the layers in the store. I am thinking you could replace layers as needed. Also, one of the dealers on ebay from Arizona has Kluft and other high-end closeouts for cheap. He has a good reputation. He buys overruns and excess inventory and sells them cheap.
I wish you loo, PM me if you have questions. |

xyz1ab, I got curious about the mattress that you said the prior poster was misleading on the retail price so I did a search and I found this link that has the price ranging from $699 on sale to $2,559 not on sale for a King mattress set at US-Mattress.com. I know nothing about the company. I was only looking up prices. http://www.us-mattress.com/simmons-comforpedic.html
http://www.amazon.com/Simmons-Comforpedic-Skylights-California-Mattress/dp/B003FVTBA6 Ranges on AMazon.com from $779.00 to $1,249.00 depending on the size and the mattress set chosen for teh Simmons Comforpedic collection. I know nothing about this mattress but it looks like it used memory foam. I am just taking a break after clients left and I visited this forum to see if anyone needed any of my input where I always try to be honest.

thanks for the replies folks!
valpar3 - checked out Custom Sleep Design and put my measurements in but haven't received anything yet. Any idea how long this takes? also, i couldn't tell from their website if you can get different layers on each side of a king size, (I think this is called "split cores"...do you know? i'm sure my husband and I probably need different layers...
jeff8407 - where did you get your latex? if you dont mind sharing what configuration did you end up with and what are your wants for a mattress? (side, back, sleeper, etc). i know its different for everyone but I'm trying to find people who may have similar needs in a mattress and what worked for them...i think i basically want good firmish support for my back with a little bit of softness or 'cush' on top (doesnt have to be too soft or "pillowy". has anyone tried a latex over innerspring combo and is willing to share the details? I've searched this forum for previous posts about this, but I'm not finding any specifics or details on what people actually bought and tried. I'm going to check out the innersprings at Macy's tonight. i would like to order from Costco b/c of their return policy, but they dont have much selection of firm to med firm innersprings in Cal King size...Sealy mostly. Plus i think JimSocal on this forum bought one of the Sealys from costco (or it may have been another innerspring but it was Costco) and said it was filled with really cheap foam, so that makes me hesitate.....i guess its low risk if you can return it but i dont want to end up searching again in 5 months, this is hellish!!!

Deborah - don't know if you got your mattress or not but in answer to your question, Custom Sleep Designs can customize the bed side to side as well. I am getting a king size from them and that is what I am doing as well as customing from head to foot. I should be getting mine in the next few weeks - I actually went to their showroom in Connecticut to check it out. It was a very rewarding experience - the people could not have been nicer - I spent 2 hours in there trying out beds before we came up with a comfort design plan that will work for me. Good luck!
