Latex topper recommendations

My wife and I just purchased a king sized Luxury Firm mattress from Original Mattress factory.  We picked it because it felt supportive, and we knew we could put something on top of it to get a little extra softness.  We are both side sleepers, but she sometimes moves to her back (I only sleep on my side),  I'm 5'11", 210lbs, and my wife is 5'6" 155lbs. While this mattress is great for support, we're looking for some softness on top of that. We actually loved the soft plush latex mattress at OMF, but it was a little spendy for us.  I'd love something to give that heavenly soft feeling we both loved when trying out that latex mattress.   After some searching around on this forum what I'm considering doing is ordering the 2" 20 ILD latex topper from foambymail.   I'm just wondering if 2" going to be enough, or should we go with 3"?  If 3" is better, is the 20 ILD going to be too soft at 3" that we'll start to lose support?  I guess another option is to get the 2" topper now, and if we need more we can add another 1" later?  Another option I thought of when searching here is getting the 1" 20 ILD topper, and then putting a 1" Comfort Dreams memory foam on top of that to give it a softer feel.  We have a memory foam topper on our current mattress, so we're used to how it feels. Is stacking it like that OK, or will the toppers move around too much?

So an update and another ask for help here.  We ended up getting a 1" memory foam topper from overstock.  It is actually very comfortable, and just the right amount of cushion on the mattress.  Unfortunately it sleeps extremely hot!  Even though we had memory foam before, this one just feels 10 times hotter.  We have the st dormier wool mattress protector, but we were still roasting.  Last night we went ahead and removed the memory foam, and we were much much cooler.  Unfortunately it just wasn't soft enough with the mattress alone, so we do need something on there.  I was thinking of purchasing a soft 1" latex layer from Foam By Mail.  My question is, is that even worth it?  Is it going to be much cooler than the memory foam topper we were using was?

Yes, it will be much cooler than memory foam.  I would go to 2 inches but no one can really tell you how much cush you really need.  One inch of soft probably won't be enough...I would go 2 or 3 inches depending on what you are looking for and whether you are a side sleeper or not....in which case you might need 3 or more inches.  Yes, you can stack them and they don't slide around.  You could buy an inexpensive zipper cover (FBM has them and they work) to cover them and keep them in place even better.  Latex doesn't slide around too much unless you are jumping around on them or diving into them.

Thanks for the reply.  I was thinking 1" just because the 1" memory foam was enough padding for us.  Just need something that doesn't bake us alive every night.  I guess we could also put the 1" memory foam under the latex if needed?

What did you end up with that's comfortable?  I am in the same situation.  I really liked the OMF latex beds but they were too spendy.  I ended up with the orthopedic firm with intentions to get a topper.  I have it home now and put on the Costco Cuddlebed but it needs more softness.  The bed is really firm.  I am looking for toppers now.  By reading some other posts it seems like people say the FBM 20 ILD is not all that soft and is closer to other companies 28 ILD so I don't think that would compare to the OMF latex beds in terms of softness.  I am looking now at other brands which are a little spendier but I'm nervous as I'm in a CA king size and it adds up quickly.  Just curious what you've ended up with and if you're happy.  I previously had a 1" memory foam topper on my old bed and also found it hot so I don't want another one.  Thanks!

We did mattress surgery and bought latex foam from FBM. While I think the quality is fine, there are many folks here that say the 20 is more like a 28 ILD. I haven't personally tried any other latex so I can't compare, but I can attest to the fact that the 2" of 32 and the 1" of 20 (supposedly) is VERY firm on top of our Stearns and Foster coils. We just ordered a 2" 22 ILD natural latex topper from Arizona mattress. The price was good and I was told by someone at Arizona that their natural latex is from Latex International. Hopefully that will help us soften up our bed enough to get a better nights sleep.

For the previous poster who said the memory foam was comfortable but too hot, I've heard lots of positive reviews about a wool mattress pad -- it is supposed to make the heat issue much better!
