Let's Talk Latex and Foundation
Hi Folks, I just received rest of my latex mattress from FBM. the mattress is a 6"medium core, 2"medium comfort, and 1" pu. I have been using the 2" topper for about two weeks on a interspring mattress that I cut apart to see why the depressions after 3.5 yrs. The springs are the problem with it, the mattress consist of pu foam. The latex received, has imperfection as I was expecting, but it shouldn't effect the sleeping. The odor on the 2" latex topper was stout, with a scale of 1-10 it would be about a 8, comparing it to the 6" core. I aired it for a couple of days before putting it on the bed, we are sleeping on it at present. The odor is still pretty strong,we've been taking the covers off and letting it air a couple of days a week. I don't believe it will be a problem with the core. The topper sleeps ok on the mattress after I built up the depressions from beneath the mattress. FOUNDATION: I must decide what foundation to place the entire mattress on. I've done a search and read the post on foundations. 2.5 inch spacing between slats seem to be what most recommend. I really have not seen a post as how people have been satisfied with plywood over a box springs. As a trial, I lay two 3" boards spaced 2"apart on the surface of the core and applied my weight on them, as expected foam protrudes down some between the boards. I don't believe this would be good in the long haul, I would think a pourous strong fabric should be installed over the slats, if slats are used. I've call FBM but the manager is out today. He had told me plywood over the springs would be ok. Ventilation of the mattress? The holes in the 6" core don't go all the way thru, only about 2" from the surfaces. Is this just FBM latex are is this true with other latex. The holes go all the way thru on the 2"topper..... Moisture build up on a solid surface under a Mattress that is off the floor? Any experience or just old wife's tells? Experince is the best teacher. Comments are welcome and appreciated. At this point, I am please with the transaction with FBM but I would not want to attempt sending back the 6" core or the 2" topper for that matter. If one had box to ship it in, it might not be too bad. Shipping back latex has a way of making you eaiser to please. Thanks for all the post and pictures, I've read a bunch. Thanks, Bear |

Re: Let's Talk Latex and Foundation
Electracat I ordered the 2"medium latex topper first to try on a firm mattress in the guest room. It was too hard, too much pressure on the shoulders. I had intentions of ordering 1" latex soft for the top layer but when I talked to Carlo at FBM and expained the above, he suggest that I needed the 1" of Super Soft M as the top layer, so that's what I purchased. I unpacked the core and pu, then laid on it in the floor, it felt good. It remains to be seen how it will do on the bed with the other 2" medium latex for the middle layer By the way my wife has migraines and is sensitive to odor, as I said, the odor of the 2" topper we now use was, and is still strong. She refused to sleep on it a few times. I asked a clerk at FBM why the difference in the odor of the topper and core, she said the topper was fresh cut. Maybe the core had been laying around awhile. That's more than you ask, but am trying to put a little of my experience out there for all to read. I ordered 9" total of foam to get the height of the mattress a little more eye pleasing to my wife. I had the same problem with my FBM latex. My latex international latex holes go all the way through. My guess is it relates to the people involved with the manufacturing process. I think FBM sources from an extremely low end manufacturer. |
