I am starting my search for a new mattress. My current mattress is around 10 years old (Simmons Back Care Entre) and I am starting to feel the springs when I sleep. I have flipped and rotated the mattress and still feel them. I do not know how long I plan to keep this mattress since right now I am living with my parents, but depending on job situation might move out in a year. When I move I plan to invest in a more expensive mattress (Sleepez/Flobed/maybe Carpe Diem, Vi Spring, or Hastens) and the mattress I buy now would be for when I visit. I weigh around 150 pounds and usually sleep on my stomach or side. I just want to get something that will help me get better quality sleep. Right now I am mainly looking at:
Costco in store $399 Novaform Gel Memory Foam Mattress Queen http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11621595&search=novaform+mattress&Mo=22&cm_re=1_en-_-Top_Left_Nav-_-Top_search&lang=en-US&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&Sp=S&N=5000043&whse=BC&Dx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntk=Text_Search&Dr=P_CatalogName:BC&Ne=4000000&D=novaform+mattress&Ntt=novaform+mattress&No=6&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Nty=1&topnav=&s=1 Sleep Innovations Memory Foam Mattress http://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Innovations-12-inch-Memory-Mattress/dp/B003CT37L0 Original Mattress Factory Classic (if they deliver to NJ) http://www.originalmattress.com/classic/overview or an Ikea Mattress
I am not sure which base I would use for the memory foam though...
Any opinions or comments are appreciated.

I can't comment on the others, but i would be wary of Ikea mattresses unless you like a very firm mattress or you think you can soften it up with toppers. We subleted a furnished apartment for about 10 months last year and the guy had an ikea mattress on an ikea bed frame and an ikea futon used as a couch. Unfortunately, I don't know which ikea mattress he had, but both bed mattress and futon mattress were super hard and i developed a progressively stronger hip pain (i sleep on my side alot) while we lived there. also, my arms would often go numb on the futon. the bed mattress was definitely more comfortable than the futon, but not by a whole lot... its possible they have softer and/or higher quality at ikea mattresses at ikea than the one i slept on, but i dont know, i havent really checked and my experience is only that above. Also, if its any indication most of their couches aren't super comfortable either. some of them are super cute in design, but very firm and start to hurt after sitting on them for awhile. |
I just ordred a mattress from Foam by Mail and it is great. The quality is actually better than the Latex International I have. Six inches of foam will cost you about $600 for a queen, plus I would recommend a 2" topper. I think you will be happy--certainly moe happy than with an IKEA IMHO. We also bough the Novaform Gel for my daughter and it is junk after two years. Sorry, I can't help you with the other ones. My exwife had a Hastens and it was too stiff for me. I had to ad a latex topper for comfort, but it was very high quality.

Now Costco has the Sealy Barryton Queen Mattress on sale for $480 after coupon (in store), I will most likely go for this, although it has a little more foam than I would like.
It seems like it should be decent for a few years and be a good candidate for mattress surgery down the line (when hopefully it will be in a guest room).

Just looking on Sleeys website and below is a link to 43 different mattresses that are within the budget you expressed. Hope this helps.

This is a good deal and may suit your needs: http://overnightmattress.com/memory_foam_mattresses/basic_mattress_free_shipping/index.asp?size=TWIN You don't need the foundation, you can put it right on the floor or on an old box springs. Or buy a cheaper foundation or make one. This message was modified May 1, 2011 by jimsocal

Watch out for memory foam! It creates "normal body impressions" that are often painful. |
