Mattress for side sleeper?

I just bought a Simmons plush, pillow top  pocket coil bed, 16 gauge coils. Slept on it for less than a week and my hips ached and I tossed and turned all night.  It feels like the springs are hitting my hps when I lay down. I have arranged to exchange it but I can't make any additional exchanges after this.  I'm wondering if I'm better off  getting a bed without a pillow top and putting my own memory foam topper on it. Any suggestions. I'm really wishinng I hadn't bought a Simmons.

Absolutely! Whatever you do DON'T get a pillowtop. It will just hammock and give you a backache. But I am surprised you're feeling the springs on one. Could be the pocket coils--which by the way, don't hold up very well in time either. See if you can exchange it for something with a standard coil unit, just make sure it's sturdy. Get the mattress with the least amount of foam and put your own topper on it.

I agree. I'm a side sleeper too and am currently shopping for a new mattress. I have tried about 15 mattresses so far in the stores (5-15 minutes each on them) and am finding that the pillowtops with memory foam all bother my back or hip area to one degree or another. My body just sinks too much, throwing my spine out of alignment.  (I'm only 160, 5' 10")  Even on the firm mattresses with the foam tops.

I have a non-famous Diamond spring mattress (I say non-famous as they don't advertise and not all stores carry them) with the traditional pillowtop that was great. Lasted a good 7-8 years but they don't make this model anymore. And seems like most manufacturers have all jumped onto the memory foam (or memory foam + latex) pillowtop bandwagon. Sucks, as the traditional pillowtops (with some kind of non-foam fill) were the best, IMO.
