Here is the latest update on my mattress project: I just bought a new latex core and I like it very much. It is made of natural latex, Dunlop process, ILD is 45 to 49. The foam distributor calls this firmness their NaturaLux model number D95. The label said "extra extra firm." It is eastern king size, and is a true 6 inches thick, not 5.6 inches. It was a good deal, too. It cost approximately $900, including shipping. All other quotes I could find on the web were $1200 and up. I did not get the 5 zone model that is available, just the uniform firmness model. I bought it through Jackie at Creative Ventures, phone number 707-435-8434, web site www.bjventures.net. I learned of her business on this forum, from a post by a very knowledgeable poster named haysdb, so I decided to give her a try. I can highly recommend buying your latex from her. She is very nice, and extremely easy to work with and very responsive with feedback via phone and email. She arranged for the latex to be "drop shipped" directly from the foam distributor (www.sleepcomp.com) to my house, which is nice since I didn't have to pay for shipping to her place and then to mine.

Nice to know that you like Jackie. There are multiple online sellers that offer genuine latex for LESS than $900. Foambymail is on example - King - $609.00. Just IMO - the proof of mattress comfort is confirmed by continued reliablilty and consistent comfort after around six months or even a year so good luck and please keep everyone posted. So far as toppers go every individual feels something different when they put it on top of their "core" or whatever is underneath that for some reason wasn't comfortable enough and had to be augmented with another layer. The few ultra firm latex mattresses we found in stores to try were like sitting on or lying on a slab of concrete but one man's comfort platform is either soft goo or concrete to someone else's body so it's nice that what you bought seems to work for you. Believe me, I did spend (way too much) time searching the web and calling places, including foambymail which sells a 6 inch core for 589.99 in eastern king, 609.99 in cal king.

However, foambymail's foam is Talalay, unknown if natural/synthetic, and with a maximum available ILD of 33 to 38. I was looking for a much firmer core (firmer costs more), and I was looking for Dunlop process, to avoid springiness and maximize firmness. My core is all natural latex, (which doesn't actually matter to me, but it does to some people.) The cheapest place I found for the firmness I wanted was Jackie, as described above. But yes, if you are looking for medium or soft Talalay, then fbm is hard to beat, it would seem.

On the other hand, I didn't ask Jackie for a price on medium firmness Talalay. The softer latex cores are generally cheaper (I have found), so maybe her price does indeed compare favorably. I don't know...
This message was modified Mar 13, 2009 by Mattress_Project
