It arrived yesterday, right on time, in 5 big boxes, 3 of which contained the matching foundation. The boxes were not at all beat up, but they had been opened at some point and re-closed with tape in place of the staples. One of those boxes had come open on the truck and, fortunately, my awesome UPS guy saw that the hardware had fallen out.
The foundation was super easy to put together. It came in 3 pieces already covered in fabric. All I had to do was bolt them together.
The other two boxes contained the latex and cover. The medium and soft layers were in the box with the cover, which was a little awkward to get it out and have a safe place to put the 2 layers of latex while I wrestled with getting the firm layer into the cover. Here's what the package looks like once it's out of the box. It's big, about 4' tall, but it's still a wonder to me how they get it as compact as they do. Two layers of latex and a cover wrapped in black pastic and held in by a heavy clear plastic bag. I had to cut the bag some to get it out.
Once I got the cover out I laid it on the foundation and got the firm layer. It was a tight fit to get it into that cover, in fact, I had a sinking feeling that the cover was going to be too small. Eventually, I did get it situated.
The next two layers were easier. I used the same kind of motion one would use to put sheets on a bed, but with a bit more force. The latex layers bounce off each other nicely.
All zipped up:
From the side:
The cover is NOT like Plamarine's cover. I don't know if that's because he got the 13,000 or those were the last of a stock, or what. My cover is not really a shiny material, the way it looks a little bit in the photos. It's a nice soft natural cotton of a light ecru color with only the slightest sheen to it. The biggest issue I would say I have with the cover is that the edges seem a little roughly sewn, but that may be just the way it has to be done. Oh, also, the foundation sticks out a little further than the mattress at the corners, which looks a little weird to me. A close-up of the cover:
Seal of approval from a family member:
I slept on the bed last night, I couldn't wait to get in it because I was sore from moving the boxes and putting the thing together. My first impression was that it is very, very comfortable. I did toss and turn a lot through the night, but that may be because it's a new situation for me. So, I can not say that I got a good night's sleep, because I did not. I did not find it to be hot at all, though. Any hot flashes I might have had are completely normal for me. I woke up with a bit of mid/lower-back pain. I don't know if was from the bed or from the work I did. I do suspect that it's too soft for me, though, at S/M/F. I'll give it a couple days/a week and then decide. I may need to get an XF and ditch the soft layer. I'll update as I go. |
sandman, thanks. I did notice that the ILD's for SleepEZ were somewhat higher. When I lay on the bed, it does not feel too soft at all. It feels great.
roy, it's a Twin XL. It was $1340 for the mattress and foundation. If you go with the blended Talalay or the Dunlop latex it's less, and if you get their standard (or no) foundation it's even less. I bought the frame locally and could have got one for less if I bought it used. SleepEZ sells legs, but at the time of my order they did not have the tall ones, which is what I wanted. I was also hesitant to alter the foundation in any way (i.e. screw holes), in case it didn't work out for me and I wanted to return it. Sheets are harder to find retail for the twin XL and I had to order a mattress protector online (recommended by someone here, and I recommend it as well) to fit. |
Well that bed looks nice. And the cat is sweet. My cats like it too, and so does all the kids. I got one from SleepEz a few weeks ago. I am still right where your at, with it being too soft, and lower back pain, but getting better because I sleep on my husbands side most the night. He asked for an X-firm to be sent out, it helped a lot. That soft is pretty much useless. Feels like a big wet marshmellow to me. Medium isn't much firmer. So me weighing 165 at 5ft5, and just giving birth, that X-firm and Firm feels good. But I still don't like that soft on top. The topper should be Medium. I plan on loosing this baby weight, so Shaun told me I should wait to buy a mattress but I didn't listen to him. He said I may prefer the softer after my weight goes down. I don't know how people can keep changing these layers out every winter, since we all gain some then. It's hard enough making sandwiches everyday for 5 other people. My screen name should have been mycrazycakebed!. hope you find what works for you. I got my foundation at Amazon, it's called a NOMAD, I love it. It is simple Tulip Popular wood with slats, and only cost me $149 |
Night 2: I slept better, woke up a few times less than the night before. However, I still have the lower-mid back pain, and woke up with a sharp pain in the shoulder I was lying on, which went away after about 20 minutes. That is definitely a new pain and not one I can attach to any other activity.
mycakebed, I want to know more about your Nomad bed. Does it look like you could put a foundation on it, under the mattress? |
Cynicaljones, great pictures, and it all does look good. Where did you buy the slatted foundation? It looks really nice. Hang in there, hopefully you will adjust, and if not exchange the soft for a medium. What causing that squeaking you hear? The metal frame? I hate squeaking noises in the night. You have the option which is really great. Thanks for the posting. This message was modified May 21, 2010 by Leo3

Leo, the foundation came from SleepEZ. They sell matching foundations for both the regular and the Natural Organic mattresses. I presume the premium price for the Natural Organic is at least for the organic covering on it, which matches the mattress cover. Note that the foundation comes in 3 pieces and you do see that i you son't have a bed skirt. That might bother some people. You don't see that in the pictures on their website, and I don't know if the regular ones are like that.
ETA: the noise is actually more of a rattle than a squeak. I think it is something in the metal frame (which I bought locally). I think it might be where the wheels are attached. I can't be sure though, so if I end up moving layers around, I will investigate further. This message was modified May 21, 2010 by cynicaljones

I see now the 3 parts to the foundation, did you obviously have to assemble it then? Can you install the legs if you get some at Home Depot? I always use bedskirts so that is easy to hide. If it is still too soft wouldn't a mattress pad firm it up more? You are using a mattress pad though I think. Keeps us posted, I hope in a few weeks you will be happy with it. I think it looks nice anyway. |
Night three: slept better, none of the aches and pains as the previous 2 nights. I slept on top of a lightweight feather blanket I have, but I don't know if that is the cause. Leo, yes, I had to assemble the foundation; and the mattress pad is actually a just a very lightweight vinyl and terry cloth protector. |
Sorry you did say in your original posting that you had to put the frame together, I missed it first time. Did you use the feather blanket the first night? I would not put anything on top of it in order to decide if you are happy with the latex layers you ordered. Then decide if you need firmer or not. Then after you are happy with your setup, put your comfort stuff on to make it even better. That is just MHO. |
This "blanket" is so thin, it's two thin cotton sheets with, for all intents & purposes, air between them. But you're right, I should not use any comfort layers for now and will try tonight without, just to see how it goes. |
The last couple nights I have slept pretty good, but wake up with a sore back. I'll give it a couple more nights, then change the layers around to see if it'ssimply too soft. Also, there is increasing noise from either the frame or the foundation or both. I'm not sure which. |
