I'm a senior, late 60's, that has bursitis and arthritis in several places plus just this last October I had an accident and ended up with two ruptured disks in my lower back and nerve damage on my right side down my hip, leg and foot. My wife also has arthritis. When visiting friends recently, I slept on their air mattress which was on top of a standard box spring lower for 5 days. It was an Aerobed mattress that was very thick. To make a long story short, for the first time in months, I didn't have all the pains I normally have in the mornings I slept on this firm air mattress. I'm considering buying one for a longer TRIAL replacement for my old spring mattress but the problem is that I keep reading that these mattresses have regular leak problems and that after the 2 year warranty, you have to buy another one. This wouldn't be a real bad deal if my leg, hip and back pains were greatly reduced but is there anyone out there that has had experience with air mattresses (the better $200 - $300 variety) that have lasted for them? I wanted to try one for a period of months to see if the pain healing worked for a longer time before investing in a more expensive air mattress. I've tried very firm standard mattresses but they were not much help for me or my wife. Mac This message was modified Mar 24, 2009 by mac456456

IDOCTORS - In our opinion - doctors don't know any more about how to get a good night's sleep than anyone else. The prevailing myth for so very many years is that a rock hard firm mattress is the solution for arthritis and other back and sleep pain but more and more testimony available online says that ain't so. Plus, my bride and I have learned that sleep comfort varies from person to person - even people that seem to suffer from identical medical conditions vary greatly in their experiences with finding sleep comfort. PRICE - In our experience - the price of a mattress has little to do with the comfort a sleeper finds on it. Recently we tried every make and model of innerspring, foam and tempur-pedic and mattresses costing thousands were not much better to us than many that cost significantly less. We have read a testimony from owners of the most expensive air mattresses complaining that they don't hold to selected firmness levels because they don't reliably hold their air pressure. If you both find full night's sleep comfort on a less expensive air mattress then don't worry that you didn't spend as much!! My bride has many of the same chronic problems that you have - arthritis in her legs and arms and shoulders - three damaged disks - developing scoliosis and a large tarloff cyst - she is in her 50s and I am in early 60s. We recently decided we needed something a bit firmer and bought a new waterbed mattress - extra waveless and extra firm with a new Cloud9 three inch medimum firm topper. Our latest waterbed mattress (we've slept on them for 22 years) including the new topper cost less than $500.00. Inflatable air mattresses and waterbed mattresses have a huge advantage over all other types of mattresses as you can easily adjust firmness on both types. We think firmness adjustability is huge. Many people don't consider a waterbed mattress to be a "real" mattress able to compete with more traditional sleep platforms. Many feel the same way about the Aero-bed. If the Aero bed gives you a painless and comfortable full night's sleep then who in the heck cares what others think?? We wake up each morning painless and rested - we linger on our wonderful mattress combo because it feels so darn good. Others that can have that same experience with whatever they sleep on means that they also found that unique sleep platform that works for them. Best of Luck |
I appreciate the feedback. We're in the same age group as you and your wife. After reading page after page after page of customer reviews about mattresses and the selling tactics, I've come to the conclusion that mattress manufacturers and retailers are in the same category as lawyers, used car sellers and politicians as far as business ethics go- NONE . . . . . I like the idea of a water bed and have given thought about that as well. Mac |
