My Fiancée and I are looking for a new bed for the house we are building. We are two totally different sizes and different sleepers. He is 6'5" and 300 lbs. I am 5'1" and 110 lbs. He sleeps on his stomach and I sleep on my side and back. We are running into issues on what type of bed to get that will meet both of our needs. We don't want to get the adjustable mattress as it is rather expensive. We are looking for a comfortable mattress that isn't too hard, but is still supportive and affordable. We aren't looking to spend more than $2,000 and are looking into a King or Cal King. During research, it looks like the latex one is the best to go... but I am not sure if that is correct. From what I read, it seems like you should stay away from pillow tops when you have a heavy person. But honestly I really don't know... Could someone please give us suggestions as we are new to this mattress buying. Thanks for the help in advance. |
A latex bed may indeed by the right way to go. In a king size, you would be getting split latex layers that would be set to customized firmness levels for you and your husband. A heavier person normally needs a firmer latex for support. A lighter person typically doesn't need as firm. If you sleep on your side, you need enough give in the mattress that you won't have pressure points on your hips. Latex is great for this. I've had my latex mattress since October and have been really happy with it. I got mine from Flobeds. In choosing a latex mattress, you want to buy from a company that sells the latex foam along with a zippered mattress cover. When the latex and cover are shipped to you, you would lay out the cover, put the latex on top, and zip up the cover. The reason this is a great method is that if it turns out your side or his is too soft or too firm, you can return a layer for something softer or firmer, whatever you need. Being able to experiment with the layers and get just what is comfortable is one of the real benefits of latex. And, anticipating the question ahead of time, no, you don't feel a seam where your latex side and his latex side meet up. My bed has custom firmnesses on each side, but over the entire bed is a single layer topper, plus the wool and knit cotton mattress cover. Also, buy it from a company that allows you not only to *exchange* latex layers, but also *return* the whole bed for a refund if it doesn't work out for you. As great as they are, some don't like them. A latex bed might be a little more expensive than the price point you mention for a king, but over the long run, it will be less expensive, because latex beds really do last decades. If you bought a regular mattress (say from an "S" brand) my guess is that the PU foam inside would break down very quickly (especially with his weight) and you'd be back at square one looking for a new bed within months or a few years at most. As a starting point, look at these two websites: http://www.flobeds.com/ http://www.sleepezbeds.com/ |
If I"m not mistaken flobeds are a bit over $2k for their latex mattresses in a KING, otherwise I'd say try a flobeds or a sleepez. Otherwise, in that price range you could get a cheap firm spring mattress with good springs, then buy latex toppers (about 2 or three 1-inch layers) and mix and match them on top of the springs so that one side is softer, and one side is firmer. Expect to pay about $400-600 for the latex toppers and $400-1000 for the Firm spring mattress. Then do mattress surgery and insert your toppers. |
Definitely. You should probably also stay away from pillow tops when you have a light person. Or someone of intermediate weight. Otherwise choose whatever you like. The big issue with latex is that not everyone likes it. My husband doesn't really care for it, but he can sleep on most mattresses while I'm the one with the problem back, so he's humoring me. I would recommend trying some latex mattresses first to see if you like the feel, or else choosing a vendor that permits returns. Linda |
