New mattress + topper too firm

So a few months ago I received a standard spring mattress and after sleeping on it for a few weeks I decided it was entirely too firm for my liking. A few weeks ago I bought a 3" thick memory foam topper from sharper image...however this turned out to also be too firm for me. There was actually little difference between the topper and just the mattress.

I'm not looking to spend several hundred dollars on a new mattress or extremely fancy toppers. I would just like some advice on cheaper alternatives for what I'm looking for. Obviously the softer the better, I am young and have no health issues. I'm wondering should I stay with memory foam or try latex or wool? As I understand there aren't any places that will let you try out toppers before you buy them so I'm stuck there in terms of trying it out for myself.

I was looking at the Serta Ultimate 4"topper but after reading some reviews it seems it is actually only 2" of memory foam and the rest is filler. It seems there is a lot of misinformation out there and I'd like to hear from people who know what they're talking about.

Thank you in advance!
